Description
DECORATIVE ITEM WITH AN EXTENDABLE FASTENER
Field of Invention The present invention relates generally to decorative items, in particular, an expandable and adjustable fastener suitable for use in combination with decorative item.
Background of Invention
EP-A1-1 203 541 disclosed a watchband fastener with an automatic closure. A knee shaped clip is provided to the bracelet and the clip rotates around an axis of the bracelet.
A zone of the clip comes into contact with the base of a slot, parallel to the axis, formed in another part of the bracelet. When the bracelet is closed, the contact zone between the zone and the slot wall is inside the bracelet. The bracelet is of the type which has two levers connected by a rotational axis to one of their respective ends. Their free ends are fixed to bosses linking the two parts of the bracelet.
US-B1 -6,532,766 discloses a decorative jewellery item which comprises a base member with a hollow interior and a decorative jewellery item which comprises a base member with a hollow interior and a decorative top, a cap brought down over the decorative top and a fastener arrangement for fixing the cap to the base member after the cap is brought into contact with the decorative top. The cap has an opening therein through which the decorative top of the base member can be observed. All exposed surfaces of the base member and cap may have surface finishing features and/or graphic representations or designs to make the jewellery item more attractive. The jewellery item may be designed to have the appearance of a single decorative unit, or to have the appearance of a double (or greater) decorative unit. Such units have application in many
jewellery items. A number of such units may be connected in series to form a tennis bracelet.
In US B1-6, 5327, 766, a decorative jewelry item, which comprises a based member with a hollow interior and decorative top, a cap having an opening there through to expose the decorative top and a connecting tongue to form link between at least two decorative units. Accordingly, the cap is placed over the decorative top and fixed to the base member, forming a decorative unit. Each decorative unit can be linked by means of a connecting tongue formed on one part of the decorative top. A series of connected decorative units forms a tennis bracelet. Apart from providing connection between a series of decorative units, this mechanism also provides an improved means to secure gem onto the gem setting.
EP-A1-1 136 013 discloses a bracelet closure. The expansible closure for a bracelet comprises a central portion articulated at at least one of its ends, at least one arm located beside the central portion and adjacent the latter with one of its sections in the closed position. The arms each comprise at least one pin whose locking member emerges in the rest position under the action of its spring outside said lateral section of the arm. The central portion comprises a locking device comprising a pusher, at least one recess provided in the section of the central portion adapted to receive a locking member, this lateral section of the central portion comprising a notch, in the shape of an inclined plane co-acting with a locking member during closing of the closure. In the completely closed position, the locking member extends, under the action of its spring, within the recess of the central portion. The pusher secured to an actuating member permits during its actuation pushing back the locking member into its recess to unlock the closure.
EP-A1-0 913 106 disclosed a foldable fastener for a bracelet. The bracelet clasp comprises rigid base with two side members, two folding arms pivoted at one end of base and adapted to be folded down between the side members, and clevis connecting the arm to a strand of the bracelet. The arm has two parallel branches, each with a hook hooking onto the side members. The heads of branches are separated by spring slide and each has pivoting journal.
The four examples above provide the connections between two sections may be improved and therefore rigid, however the connections means are not adjustable or movable horizontally. The adjustment of the length therefore is not attainable and therefore an ideal size may be difficult to achieve.
US-A-5, 946,776 discloses a wristlet clasp including first and second elements, respectively mechanically connected to strands of a wristlet. A third element mechanically connects in a hinged manner the first and second elements. A cap is rigidly and removably fixed to the first element. This cap includes two wings. The first element is pierced by two transverse holes in which two pins or screws are engaged. One of these two transverse holes is covered by the wings of the cap. The adjustment of the length of the wristlet is affected by connecting the first element and the third element to each other either via the first pin or screw, or by the second pin or screw.
The above mechanism is suitable for interconnecting bracelets and therefore may not be suitable for items with smaller dimensions for example a ring. Further, the length adjustment mechanism is rather complicated.
Recognizing the aforementioned shortcomings, it is of significant advantage to provide a decorative item having a fastener that is adjustable and expandable to obtain an ideal size of the wearer's wrist or finger. It is as well a lot favorable for the customary users to wear a decorative item with a fastener that is of simple construction, robust and able to provide a rigid connection between two sections.
It is therefore the primary objective of the present invention to provide a decorative item with expandable fastener for various decorative items.
It is still further object of the invention to provide decorative item that is of simple construction and the fastener means is adjustable to fit the desired length.
The present invention provides an extendable fastener, comprising a first part, second and third parts that are movably connected to each other. The fastener of the present invention is easy to use in combination with a ring, a bracelet or any other decorative item. Accordingly, additional links may be needed in order to regulate the height or size of the adjustment means.
Summary of Invention Accordingly there is provided an item having two ends connected by at least one adjustable fastener, the fastener comprises a first member, a second member and a third member, wherein one end of the first member is movably connected to one end of the second member and the other end of the first member is pivotally connected to one end of the item, the second member is pivotally and movably connected to one end of the third member characterised in that the item is in a tightened position when the second member is positioned substantially parallel on top of the first member and the
item is in a extended position when the second member is moved away from the first member.
The present invention consists of several novel features and a combination of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it is being understood that various changes in the details may be made without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
Brief Descriptions of Drawings For the purpose of facilitating and understanding of the present invention, there is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with the following description, the invention, its construction and operation and many of its advantages would be readily understood and appreciated.

Detailed Description of the Invention
The present invention relates to decorative items. Hereinafter, this specification will describe the present invention according to the preferred embodiments of the present invention. However, it is to be understood that limiting the description to the preferred embodiments of the invention is merely to facilitate discussion of the present invention and it is envisioned that those skilled in the art may devise various modifications and equivalents without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, the present invention comprises of a ring (2) having an extendable fastener. The extendable fastener of the present invention comprises a first member (3), a second member (4) and a third member (5).
The present invention is suitable for use in combination with various decorative items; however, this function does not limit the scope of invention, as claimed.
According to the first embodiment of the present invention, the first member (3) is preferably formed from a suitable material into an inverted S-shaped cross section; wherein accordingly, at one end of the said first member (3) there is provided a first extension protruding upwards having an aperture (10), accordingly sized, for fixture to the second member (4) (Figure 1 b). At the opposite end of the said first member (3) there is provided a second extension protruding downwards, having an aperture (11), accordingly sized, to receive elements of the ring of the present invention. In accordance to the present invention, the first extension may function as a locking mechanism when the fastener is in an extended position.
The diameter of the first aperture (10) is approximately twice over the diameter of the second aperture (11).
The second member (4) of the fastener is basically a rectangular shaped piece, wherein on both sides of the said member (4) there is provided an extension, located approximately at the central portion of each side for attachment to the third part (5). At one end of said member (4) there is provided an accordingly sized cutout portion (12) to receive one end of the first member (3).
The third member (5) of the fastener in accordance to the present invention comprises a pair of arms, each of which having accordingly sized apertures to receive fastening means. The first aperture is located on the top portion of each arm, and the second aperture is located on the bottom end of each arm. The first aperture is correspondingly sized to receive the extension provided on second member (4), for providing a pivot connection to the said second member (4). The second aperture of each arm is for attachment to a section of the ring (2).
Operational Effect Decorative Item: Ring
According to the present invention, at least one end of the first member (3) is pivotally connected to a section of the ring (2), and the other end is pivotally and movably connected to at least one end of the second member (4). In this connection, the first extension of said member (3) fits suitably in the cutout portion (12) provided on one end of second member (4). In this position, the first member (3) is movable within the second member (4). The movement of the first member (3) is restrained by the locking mechanism.
The locking mechanism comprises a female locking means, specifically the first aperture (10) in the first member (3) and a male locking means, specifically an extension in the second member (4), wherein the locking of the first and second members (3,4) is attained by way of engaging the female locking means with the male locking means.
The central portion or the midpoint of each longitudinal dimension of the second member (4) in accordance to the present invention is pivotally and movably connected to member (5). The other ends member (5) is also pivotally connected to a section of the ring (2).
Referring to Figure 1b, when assembled, in a closed position, the second member (4) of the fastener is therefore locked on top of the first member (3), which is the tightened position of the decorative item, ring (2). Accordingly, member (5) of the fastener is pushed downwards, to a position, wherein both arms of said member (5) are horizontally parallel to the second member (4).
Figure 1d illustrates an extended position of the fastener. In this position, the second member (4) is essentially parallel to the first member (3) and slightly moved away from the first member (3), specifically out of collimation with the first member (3). Consequently, both arms of the third member (5) are actuated upwardly, and thus the decorative item, referred herein as the ring (2) is in an extended position.
In accordance to the present invention, there is a variety of adjusting means, which can be incorporated to the fastener.
According to the second embodiment of the present invention, the ring (2) may comprise of rotatable element (8), preferably positioned on top of second member (4) (Figure 2).
According to the third embodiment of the present invention, there is provided additional means (6) for regulating the height of the decorative item ring (2) (Figure 3). In this context, the regulating means (6) is preferably rod-shaped or the like and positioned adjacent to first member (3) of the fastener, specifically below the first member (3).
According to the fourth embodiment of the present invention, the adjusting means (8) is in the form of a rectangular shaped piece, referred herein as the rotating flipper, provided on the second member (4) of the fastener. The rotating flipper (8) is pivotally connected on second member (4).
According to the fifth embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a knob (13) or a rod -like means on the second member (4) for adjusting the size of the decorative item ring (2).
Decorative Item: Bracelet
The fastener of the present invention can be used to form a bracelet (9), wherein the width of said bracelet can be adjusted to suitable fit the wearer's arm.
The bracelet (9) of the present invention as shown in Figure 6 and 7 of the present invention consists of a plurality of the fasteners (1), wherein the fasteners are aligned to form a series of fasteners and thus a bracelet. As shown in Figure 8, the fasteners are in an opened state, therefore extended and the diameter of the bracelet is slightly increased.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that the present invention provides a fastener, which can be used in combination with decorative items. Nevertheless, the subject fastener may also be used in combination or solely, for other suitable fastening mechanism.
Claims
1. An item (2, 9) having two ends connected by at least one adjustable fastener (1), the fastener comprises a first member (3), a second member (4) and a third member (5), wherein one end of the first member (3) is movably connected to one end of the second member (4) and the other end of the first member (3) is pivotally connected to one end of the item (2, 9), the second member (4) is pivotally and movably connected to one end of the third member (5) characterised in that the item (2, 9) is in a tightened position when the second member (4) is positioned substantially parallel on top of the first member (3) and the item (2, 9) is in an extended position when the second member (4) is moved out of collimation with the first member (3).
2. The item (2, 9) according to claim 1 , wherein movement of the first member (3) along the second member (4) is restrained by a locking mechanism.
3. The item (2, 9) according to claim 2, wherein the locking mechanism comprises a female locking means in the first member (3) and a male locking means in the second member (4), wherein the locking of the first and second members (3, 4) is achieved by engaging the female locking means with the male locking means.
4. The item (2, 9) according to claim 1 , wherein the second member (4) is connected to the third member (5) substantially at its midpoint of both its lateral sides.
5. The item (2, 9) according to claim 1, wherein the second member (4) comprises a rotating means (8).
6. The item (2, 9) according to claim 5, wherein the rotating means (8) is positioned in an aperture of the second member (4).
7. The item (2, 9) according to claim 1 , wherein the second member (4) is provided with an adjusting means for regulating the height and/or size.
8. The item (2, 9) according to claim 1 , wherein the item (2, 9) is a decorative item such as a ring or a bracelet.
