Description

Single Use Juice Sachet
Field of the Invention
The invention is in the field of juice sachets, particularly single use sachets for lemon juice.
Background to the Invention
The inventors are aware that in fast food and other restaurants where fish is served and/or other foods and beverages with which a slice of lemon is appropriate the provision of the slice of lemon may be a logistical problem and result even in a consumer being served a stale slice of lemon.
Furthermore, in some countries it is traditional to drink beverages such as tea with lemon rather than with milk and likewise the provision of a slice of lemon for a single cup of tea is logistically problematic, especially in view of the volumes of customers served.
Previous attempts to solve this problem have included the provision of citric acid crystals in a sachet which a user could open and pour into a cup of tea prior to drinking thereof. It is clear to everyone that although this solution provides some acidity to the tea it does not approximate the taste or benefits of real lemon juice. Furthermore, it appears to the inventors that this solution would not be appropriate for serving with food such a fish or tempura.
After thorough investigation the inventor has concluded there is no single use juice sachet fit for the purpose of providing a single serving of lemon juice while maintaining the shelf life of the juice for a period of about 6 months, or even longer, which is a desirable characteristic in the catering and restaurant trade. The inventor thus has expended a lot of time and effort in devising the solution which is described and claimed in this specification.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a single use juice sachet made from a sheet material which comprises at least three layers: an outer polyester layer which is use provides a surface for receiving ink; an intermediate aluminium foil layer; and an inner polyethylene layer which in use faces the juice inside the sachet.
The polyester layer may receive printed art work and label matter.
The sachet may be formed, filled with juice, and heat sealed.
The juice may be lemon juice.
The lemon juice may be a reconstituted lemon juice made from concentrate and water.
The lemon juice may contain preservative.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a method for packaging juice in single use portions, said method including: preparing a three layer sheet material form which the sachet is formed, said sheet material including: o an outer polyester layer which is use provides a surface for receiving ink; o an intermediate aluminium foil layer; and o an inner polyethylene layer which in use faces the juice inside the sachet; the method including bonding the intermediate and inner layers; printing artwork and/or label information onto the outer layer; bonding the pre-bonded intermediate and inner layers to the preprinted outer layer and permitting the three layer sheet material to cure for a period of at least 1 day prior to forming the sachet; and forming, filling the sachet with juice, and heat sealing the sachet.
The curing period may be 7 days.
The curing period may be 14 days, or even longer.
The juice may be lemon juice.
The lemon juice may be a reconstituted lemon juice made from concentrate and water.
The lemon juice may contain preservative.
The sachets may be bundled into packs.
The packs may be packed into cases.
The cases may be sealed.
The cases may be palletised.
The pallets may be shrink wrapped.
Specific Description of an Embodiment of the Invention The invention will now be described by way of non-limiting example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings,
Figure 1 shows a sachet in accordance with the invention.
In Figure 1 , reference numeral 10 generally indicates a sachet broadly in accordance with the invention.
The sachet 10 is made from a sheet of material 12 which comprises three layers, an outer polyester layer 14, an intermediate aluminium foil layer 16, and an inner polyethylene layer 18.
The outer polyester layer 14 is the layer on which printing is carried out such as artwork, labelling, and advertising material.
The foil layer 16 serves as an oxygen barrier.
The polyethylene layer 18 is a sealing layer.
The intermediate layer 16 and inner layer 18 is bonded together, while printing is carried out on outer layer 14. After a rest period of 14 days the three layers 14, 16 and 18 are bonded together.
The sachet is formed, filled, and heat sealed in a unitary operation.
In the case of a lemon juice sachet, the juice is typically reconstituted pasteurised lemon juice made by blending water with a lemon juice concentrate to a concentration equivalent to fresh lemon juice, and preserved with a preservative such a sulphur dioxide. The inventor believes that a sachet as described above has distinct advantages over a lemon slice served with a meal or a beverage, these include but are not limited to, cleanliness, economy, shelf life of 6 months or longer, convenience, hygiene, marketing and attractiveness.
