Description
TITLE: ROD FOR HAIR CURL
Technological Field
[1] This device is a rod for hair curls, which can be widely used in salons for
hair perms and treating curly hair.
[2]
Background Art
[3] The rod for hair curls to be introduced here was developed for usage of
making curls in or perming the hair. It is an improved version of the
existing hair-curl rods, with increased efficiency and ability to create new
forms of curls.
[4] The most commonly used type of hair-curl rods used in salons and
homes for making curls in the hair is the one in the circular cylinder form
(11) with indentations in the middle (113) and grooves for fixing rubber
bands at both the ends (121) of the cylindrical body (11) (See Figures 6
and 7). The hair-curler (e.g. hair design professional) places hair (2) on
the outer body of the rod (1), starts rolling the hair from the end upward
and fixes the hair using a rubber band (not shown in the figure). By
leaving hair fixed on the rod for a specific period of time, the hair
becomes curly, i.e. permed. This commonly used type of the hair-curling
rods (11) is made of rubber or urethane in order to better hold the hair
(2) by using such materials that increase frictions on the rod body (11).
There is a lateral plate (115) on the inside where the rod body (11) and
the handle (12) meet in order to cover the inside of the rod body (11).
[5] However, using such a type of the hair-curling rods is complicated and
does not fixate the hair either. It is extremely difficult to form desired type
of curls using those curling rods, making it almost entirely up to the skills
and expertise of the hair-curler. Usage of such rods also limits the
movements of the customer, requiring for improvements in the overall
curling tools.
[6]
Disclosure of Invention
[7] This device was invented in order to resolve such aforementioned
problems. Designed structurally functional and easy for use, it enables
the hair professional to create the desired and accurate curls; is easy for
anyone to use in curling the hair; minimizes the inconvenience in
movements of the customer; and reduces the harmful effects of
chemicals used to perm the hair.
[8] For this, this device elongated the length of the existing type of the
curling rods so that the hair can be curled more easily. It attached the
handles at the end(s) of the rod body, while also adopting a structure
that enables ventilation inside the rod.
[9]
Effects of the invention
[10] Designed structurally functional and easy for use, this is an efficient and
useful device that enables the hair professional to create the desired
and accurate curls; is easy for anyone to use in curling the hair;
minimizes the inconvenience in movements of the customer; and
reduces the harmful effects of chemicals used to perm the hair.

Best mode for carrying out the invention
[29] Figure 1 shows a structural view of the device, and Figure 2 contains a
sectional view of the Figure 1 along the A-A line.
[30] As shown in the figure, the subject rod (1) is composed of various
spokes(111) formed by indentation and protrusion; a body (11) in a
cylindrical form with a cavity (112) in between the aforementioned
spokes(111); and a supporting part (113) around the edges of the ends
of the aforementioned body (11). There is a multiple number of grooves
(121) at each end of the body for fixing the hair with rubber bands; a
multiple number of protrusions (122) in the perpendicular angles to the
circumference; and a handle (121) that connects the body (11) and the
end humps (123).
[31 ] Figure 3 shows another structural view of the device.
[32] A notable characteristic with the device is that the handle (12) is located
between the both ends of the rod body (11).
[33] Figure 4 is another structural view of the device.
[34] A notable characteristic with the device is that there are grooves (14)
along the length of the rod body (11).
[35] The process of curling hair using each characteristic part of the device
can be described as follows:
[36] When the hair professional at a salon or home needs to perm or curl the
hair of a customer, the first thing the customer does is to wash hair,
which can be omitted depending on situations. The professional then
spreads a softener over the head in order to soften the hair (2). He or
she then surrounds the hair with a piece of paper or felt and starts rolling
the hair with the rod (1). The rod body of this invention (11) is indented.
A cavity is in between multiple spokes (111) at both ends. The uneven
outer part of the body (11) increases friction, which is crucial to fix the
hair covered by paper or felt. The uneven body (11) also forms fine
angles in the curled hair so that the curls can be maintained for much
longer. The spokes (111 , 111...) can be easily handled due to a cavity in
between them (112). The rod, around which the hair (2) is rolled, has a
reduced diameter if grabbed tightly, but it is restored in terms of the
diameter again after letting it go of the hand. Such a characteristic
enables the rod to fix the hair better. Also, the existing type of the rod
shown in Figure 6 creates oval curls after removing the rod (1) as it
concentrates the hair (2) into the crown-like shape in its middle. The rod
of this invention (1), however, can create even curls since its body (11) is
straight.
[37] Furthermore, because the handle (12) straightly connects the body (11)
and the end humps (123) aforementioned between the multiple grooves
(121) and multiple protrusions in the perpendicular angle to the
circumference, the hair professional can easily rotate the rod by
grabbing the handle despite the slippery materials, such as chemicals
and oil, on his or her hand. The end humps (123) between the rod body
(11) and the handle (12) prevent the hair from getting slipped out of the
rod. Also, even if a rubber band is tied around the hair and the rod in
order to fix the hair (2) better on the rod body (11), such a design of the
device prevents the hair (2) from getting unshapely from the rubber band
pressure.
[38] In this case of the device with handles on both ends of the body (11) as
shown in Figure 3, the grooves between the handles (12, 12) helps to fix
the hair (2) on the rod (1) by allowing the rubber band to tie the hair
around. In case of the device with only one handle as shown in Figures
1 and 2, the hair (2) can be fixed by using glue or any other adhesive
materials in between the rolled hair curls and the upper part of the hair
(2). The dried hair (2) is extracted from the body (11) of the rod (1). Here,
the hair can be easily extracted if the rod body (11) has a taper which
makes the rod thinner around the area of the handle (12).
[39] An oxidizer is spread over the head in order to maintain the curls when
the hair (2) is rolled (whether the hair is stilled rolled around the rod or
detached from it). The cavity inside the rod (11) in the cylindrical form
maximizes the oxidizer effect by allowing its foam to penetrate into the
hair layers through the cavities (112) formed in between the spokes
(111) (the existing type of hair rods does not allow penetration of the
chemical into the interior part of the rod body (11) since the inside of
those rods is not empty or since there are lateral plates (115) around the
rod body (11)). The cavities (112) also allow ventilation, assisting the
oxidizing effects. As shown in Figure 5, the indented, uneven rod (1) of
this invention has spokes (111) that contacts the hair (2) only partially.
The little grooves in the rod minimizes the softener (shown in small black
dots in Figure 5) remaining between the hair (2), the rod (1) and the
spokes(111) in order to protect the hair. This also minimizes the contact
between the oxidizer, which acts to maintain the curls, and the pre-
spread softener so that the perm effects can last longer.
[40] Although the rod body (11) is composed of the spokes (111) and the
cavities (112), there are supporting parts (113) around the rims of the
ends of the body (11) so that the spokes (111) and the cavities (112) can
be combined to the rod body (11). In addition, as shown in Figure 4, the
grooves (14) along the rod body (11) allows the body contraction without
a taper or even at small angles so that the rolled hair (2) can easily be
pulled out of the body (11) of the rod (1).
