Description

Interlocking means
The present invention relates for interlocking at least two parts, for example such as PCB 's (Printed Circuit Boards) of a MS (Mobile Phone), in a fixed and positioned relation to each other and to other parts, which can be surrounding parts, for example such as surrounding cover parts of the MS.
When a mobile phone design has a first PCB, i.e. a main PCB, and a second PCB, i.e. a keypad PCB, the second/keypad keypad PCB needs to be interlocked in a fixed and positioned relation to with respect to the first/main PCB and to the other parts parts, such as mechanical parts like a front/ A-cover, back/B-cover and/or an internal frame.
Usually, with assembly procedures of the parts of a MS, there are needed additional means or parts, such as spacers and ribs in A-cover and/or B-cover, to keep the PCB 's in place. These kind of prior art assemblies are therefore slow and complicated to utilize and further there is needed positioning of the parts to be assembled.
The primary objects of the invention are to overcome or at least minimize the drawbacks and weaknesses of the prior art means for fixing and positioning parts, to accomplish new and improved fixing and positioning means for improved interlocking at least two parts, preferably such as the PCB 's of the MS fixed and positioned in relation to each other and to other parts, which can be surrounding parts, preferably such as mechanical parts, which can be surrounding cover parts of a MS.
These objects have been achieved by fixing and positioning means for improved interlocking at least two parts, for example PCB's of a MS, in a fixed and positioned relation to each other and to other parts, which can be surrounding parts, for example mechanical parts, such as surrounding cover parts of the casing of the MS, for example such that the interlocking means comprise: a first opening in the first part to be fixed and positioned; a second opening in the second part to be fixed and positioned; a first interlocking element, which extends through the first opening and through the second opening; a second interlocking element, which extends at least through the second opening; and that the said first element and the second element can be fitted as counter parts to each other into a space defined by the first opening and the second opening within each other. According to an embodiment of the invention, it is preferred that interlocking elements are screw tower means, which form counter parts to each other and which interlock the parts such that the positioning and fixing is carried out by a single function, and that the openings in the parts to be fixed and positioned are as such identical but in an angle to each other whereby.
Preferably the forms of the openings are as such identical. The opening in the PCB's comprise a central opening and at least two, more preferably three, side extensions, which are situated symmetrically round the central openings and apart from each other. The edge of the opening can define a star like, rosette like, or any possible form comprising at least two extensions, which are round the central opening and apart from each other. In the case of three openings, the central axes of the extensions of the openings are in the angle of 60°.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the interlocking function is achieved just by fitting the interlocking means through the openings, which are as such identical and which are in angle in relation to each other, whereby the parts to be interlocked are supported with preferred distance from each other from below and from above. The first interlocking means and the second interlocking means can be joined to the other parts, such as surrounding mechanical parts, which can be in the case MS the front/ A-cover, the back/B-cover and/or the internal frame.
Advantages of the invention are as follows.
Assembling from one side is easier because the product does not need to be turned during assembly.
Cheap (-er), because additional parts or means are not needed,
More reliable because of less parts, - No bending (momentums) of the parts, such as PCB's, due to assembly forces and/or tolerances,
Holes in parts, such as PCB's, are the same, ie. as such identical, in each parts,
Same tool can be used for making the holes of radius > 1mm and special tools are needed when milling the features into the PCB, - Possibility to fix 6 DoF 's (Degrees of Freedom) with one screw tower means (depends on dimensioning and/or tolerances), and
The deformation features will deform when the assembled package is screwed together and the same supply the force to hold the PCB's in place.
FIG.1 discloses prior art FIG.2 discloses elements of the interlocking means according to the one preferred embodiment example of the present invention,
FIG.3 discloses an initial phase of the procedure for assembling the elements according to the FIG.2, FIG.4 discloses a later phase of the procedure for assembling the elements according to the FIG.2, FIG.4 discloses the elements according to the FIG.2 as assembled,
The invention is described in the following by referring to a preferred embodiment that concerns interlocking means 3, 4, 5, 6 for fixing and positioning the PCB's (Printed Circuit Boards), hereby the first PCB is the main board 1 and the second PCB is the keypad board 2, of a MS (Mobile Station). The mobile phone is in this embodiment a bar-type cellular phone. By means of the interlocking means the PCB's 1, 2 can be fixed and positioned in relation to each other and to the surrounding parts, which are the A-cover 10 and the B-cover 11 of the casing of the MS.
According to a preferred embodiment, the interlocking means comprise four elements, i.e. a first element 3 and a second element 4, which are counter parts to each other, and provide a screw tower part 3,4, and a first opening 5 that is made in the main PCB 1 and a second opening 6 that is made in the keypad PCB 2.
According to a very preferred embodiment the first opening 5 and the second opening 6 are formed essentially identical. A preferred form is an opening, which comprises a core or a central opening and three extensions/enlargements, which are apart from each other having an equal distance there between. According to a preferred embodiment the extensions/enlargements have symmetrical forms such that an isthmus exists between each two extensions/enlargements. The edge of the opening can define a star like, rosette like, cloverleaf or any possible form comprising at least two enlargements/extensions, more preferably three enlargements/extensions, which are round the core/central opening and apart from each other. In the case of three openings, the central axes of the extensions of the openings are in the angle of 60°.
The first interlocking element 3 fits through the first opening 5 of the main PCB 1 and the second opening of the keypad PCB 2. The second interlocking element 4 fits through the second opening 6 of the keypad PCB 2 but may comprise a top extension that can fit through the first opening 5 of the main PCB 1. The first element 3 and the second element 4, when they are fit through the openings 5, 6 of the PCB' s 1, 2, are counter parts to each other and adapt within each other and hence form the interlocking screw tower part 3,4, by which the PCB 's are secured to a desired position apart from each other and from the surrounding A-cover part 10 and B-cover part 11, which are in connection to the opposite direction facing end surfaces of the first element 3 and the second element 4 of interlocking means 3, 4. For interlocking the PCB's to a desired and fixed position in relation to each other, the first interlocking element 3 and the seconds interlocking element 4 are fitted inside the openings 5, 6 that are oriented by an amount of 30°...90°, preferably about 60°' in relation to each other.
The first element, which can be cylinder-like or tapering, extends through the openings 5, 6 of the main and keypad PCBs 1, 2 and comprises in direction from the bottom to the top thereof a bottom flange 31 , by which the first element is combined with A-cover part 10, a flange-type extension 32 above the bottom flange of desired height such that an upper, radial surface 321 makes a support bed for the main PCB 1 to be laid thereon, several, for example three, post-like extensions 33, with a desired distance, preferably at regular intervals, from each other. These post-like extensions can extend upwards from the flange-type radial extension 32. The radial upper ends 331 of the post-like extensions 33 make a support beds for the PCB 2 to be laid thereon.
The PCBs 1, 2 that lay on the radial surfaces 321, 331, which form the support beds for the PCBs, are interlocked by the second element 4.
The second element 4, which can be cylinder-like or may taper in the direction towards the bottom flange 31 of the first element 3, extends in the opposite direction in relation to the first element 3, i.e. downwards, through the second 6 of the keypad PCB 2.
The second element 4 comprises in this downwards direction: an up most flange 41, by which the second element can be combined with B-cover part 11, - a flange-type extension 42 of desired height such that an lower radial surface 421 becomes against the upper surface of the keyboard PCB 2, which is laying on those three post-like extensions 33 of the first element 3, several, for example three, post-like radial extensions 43, which extends from the flange-type extension towards the bottom flange 31 of the first element 3. The radial ends 431 of the post- like extensions 43, which are with a desired distance, preferably at regular intervals, from each other, form pusher ends for the main PCB 1, which is laying on the radial upper ends 331 of the first element 3, the said pusher ends meet the surface of the main PCB 1.
Hence the positioning and fixing is carried out by just one interlocking function. The interlocking elements 3, 4 are possible to add to the surrounding parts parts 10, 11, which can be the A-cover and B-cover of the MS, of the product.
According to the present invention the interlocking elements 1, 2 are produced by means of plastic injection moulding. By utilising the interlocking means according to present invention the product does not need turn around during the assembly.
While the assembly concept remains the same, all variables especially the amount of layers (PCB's 1, 2, surfaces, etc.), types of materials, sizes (heights, diameters, lengths...) may vary.
The concept can be applied to many other problems (with many other materials) were two or more surfaces (or planes) need to be positioned and/or fixed. The geometry of the features is the heart of the idea. Two roads (on top of each other), bunk beds, putting floors in a story building, Table with a top shelf and a lower shelf.
