Abstract

A 40-inch by 48-inch (1015 mm by 1220 mm) rectangular thermoplastic pallet for use with a forklift device has a unique construction and stacking property. The pallet comprises a base (30) having rails (31) which are reinforced with steel beams (74), hollow plastic columns (28), a thermoplastic frame (24) attached to the tops of the columns, and a corrugated aluminum deck (24) which is fastened to the frame or a subframe. The pallet is 30-45 percent metal and has a total height which is less than could heretofore be obtained in a pallet which meets criteria necessary for commercial acceptance as a so-called U.S. GMA pallet, including creep strength, weight, and fire resistance. When empty pallets are stacked, there are at least 7.2 pallets per meter of vertical height. That saves substantially on transport costs for empty pallets.
