Description
Safety Lock for Scaffolding
Field of the Invention
The present invention concerns a safety lock for scaffolding, including fastening means adapted for connecting the safety lock with a rail section on a platform on the scaffolding, and locking means for securing the safety lock to a ribbing on a side frame of the scaffolding, where the locking means include a displaceable locking pin and a hook member for connecting the platform to the ribbing.
Background of the Invention
Scaffolding is used when erecting or renovating a house when the workmen are to work at levels above ground level. This is a safety precaution, and most countries have standards and regulations requiring use of scaffolding, and institutions like e.g. the Working Environment Authority supervises the workmens' use of scaffolding.
As scaffolding is not a stationary structure and has to be removed when the erecting or renovation work is finished, the current scaffoldings include a number of platforms on which the workmen may walk, a number of side frames with ribs between which the platforms are arranged, and a number of rails and ladders.
The platforms are typically wooden boards or metal plates with reinforcing and surrounding rail sections. The side frame with ribbing and rails are typically made of metal piping which is either welded together or bolted together.
hi stormy weather there is a risk that the wind destroys the scaffolding if the individual parts of the scaffolding are not securely interconnected, hi particular the platforms are exposed to the risk of being blown off the side frames. A need for a safety lock ensuring that the platforms are securely connected to the side frames therefore arises.
The most well-known safety lock includes a hook member for connecting the platform with the ribbing and a displaceable locking pin.
The hook member is connected with the rail section on the platform and extends outwards, whereby it is possible to arrange a platform between two side frames, as the hook member surrounds a part of the metal pipe constituting the ribbing.
The displaceable locking pin is arranged in a hole in the rail section, and is a bent section designed with flat end parts whereby it is possible to remove the locking pin from the hole in the rail section.
The drawbacks of this type of safety lock are:
- The safety lock is not structurally simple and not easy to assemble.
- It is necessary to use a hammer or similar for displacing the locking pin between a locking position and a release position.
- When not in use, the locking pin is a loose unit which may move freely back and forth in the hole in the rail section, which can be a disadvantage when the scaffolding is to be assembled, as the locking pin is to be in the release position in order to allow for mounting the platform on the ribbing, and furthermore unwanted noise is produced when the platforms are transported.
Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to provide a safety lock which is structurally simple, easy to make, easy to operate, safe in use and which allows the platforms to be stacked readily and nicely.
This is achieved with a safety lock as specified in the preamble of claim 1, and where the locking means furthermore includes a head part, a connecting member and at least one compressible element which is arranged between the head part and the locking pin.
Description of the Invention
The safety lock according to the present invention comprises fastening means arranged for connecting the safety lock with a rail section on a platform on the scaffolding, and locking means for securing the safety lock to a ribbing on a side frame of the scaffolding.
The locking means includes a displaceable locking pin and a hook member for connecting the platform to the ribbing, where the hook member is arranged from above and thereby encircles part of the ribbing, and the locking pin is arranged from underneath, whereby the safety lock is secured to the ribbing in a safe way.
Furthermore, the locking means includes a head part, a connecting member and at least one compressible element which is arranged between the head part and the locking pin. The head part functions as an upper stop or a fastening point for the compressible element.
The function of the compressible element is to allow displacement of the locking pin, either for forcing the locking pin up against the metal piping of the ribbing when the locking pin is in a locked position, or for forcing the locking pin up against the underside of the rail section when the locking pin is in a released position.
Because the locking pins has a relatively slender profile, it is possible to position the locking pin so as to enable the platform to be stacked easily and nicely, e.g. by transport.
In order to ensure that the platforms do not slide, e.g. during transport, the platforms are provided with corresponding projections and recesses, where the projection, for example, is situated at the top side of the platforms, and the recess is situated at the underside of the platforms.
By stacking it is thus possible that the projection on a platform will engage the recess on another platform, thus preventing lateral movement of the platforms. In order to make room for the locking pins, the height of the projections is greater than the thickness of the locking pins and the depth of the recesses.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the compressible element is a spring arranged between the head part and the locking pin, whereby displacement of the locking pin is allowed, which makes is very easy to operate the safety lock.
Alternatively, the compressible element is of an elastic plastic material which is arranged between the head part and the locking pin.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the compressible element surrounds the connecting member. The advantages of this are that the locking pin can be displaced and rotated, and the connecting member will furthermore always hold the compressible element in correct position.
As a further safety, the head part has at least one edge part which is arranged to be positioned against a sidewall part of the rail section, whereby inadvertent rotation of the locking pin causing failure of the safety lock is prevented.
In order to ensure that the safety lock is connected with the rail section of the platform, the fastening means include a hole in the rail section through which the connecting member is arranged. Since the connecting member is arranged between the head part and the locking pin, it is impossible to remove the locking means by accident when both the head part and the locking means are fastened to the connecting member which is arranged through the hole in the rail section.
In order to ensure that the edge part on the head part may be positioned against the sidewall part of the rail section, the hole has a diameter which is greater than the diameter of the connecting member. It will thus be possible to tilt the connecting member slightly in the hole, and the edge part will, due to the compressible element and the shape of the locking pin, be pressed against the sidewall part of the rail section when the locking pin is arranged in the right position under the metal piping of the ribbing.
The hole may have any circular or polygonal shape, and the connecting member may have any circular or polygonal cross-section, but typically the hole and the cross- section will have the same shape.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the connecting member and the head part are constituted by a bolt with or without screw thread, whereby the safety lock is made
structurally simple and easy to make and assemble, since the bolt with or without screw thread is typically made with a hexagonal head part. The only required assembling is thus the mounting of the connecting member through the hole in the rail section and the connection to the locking pin.
It is to be mentioned, that the safety lock according to the present invention in the above is applied to scaffolding, but may be used in everywhere else where a platform is to be mounted securely on side frames with at least one ribbing.
Description of the drawing. The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows a safety lock according to the present invention; Fig. 2 shows locking means on the safety lock; Fig. 3 shows a head part against a sidewall; and
Fig. 4 shows a projection and a recess on a platform.
Detailed Description of the Invention
Fig. 1 shows a safety lock 1 according to the present invention, the lock 1 including fastening means adapted for connecting the safety lock 1 to a rail section 2 on a platform (not shown), and locking means 3 for securing the safety lock 1 to a ribbing 4 on a side frame (not shown). The locking means 3 includes a displaceable locking pin 5, and a hook member 6 and the locking pin 5 are shown in a locking position where the hook member 6 is partly surrounding the ribbing 4 from above, and the locking pin 5 is arranged on the ribbing 4 from below. The locking means 3 furthermore includes a head part 7, a connecting member 8 and a spring 9 which is arranged through the head part 7 and the locking pin 5. The connecting member 8 is arranged through the hole 17 in the rail section 10. The hole 17 is greater than the diameter of the connecting member 8, allowing the connecting member 8 to tilt in the hole 17 when the spring 9 is compressed. The spring 9 may be compressed by acting on the head part 7 with a finger or with a suitable tool. When the spring 9 is compressed, the connecting member 8 may be tilted in the hole 17, whereby it is possible to turn the locking means 3 from a locking position to an open position. When a scaffolding
platform is to be mounted or dismounted, the open position is used, and when the scaffolding is to be secured, the locking means 3 are turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, where the locking means 3 are secured against inadvertent opening. The locking pin 5 is secured in the locking position due to the forces coming from the spring 9 which is arranged between the head part 7 and the rail section 10.
Fig. 2 shows the locking means 3 on the safety lock (not shown) where it is possible to see that the head part 7 is shaped hexagonally with six edge parts 11. The spring 9 surrounds the connecting member 8 and is arranged between the head part 7 and the locking pin 5 which is designed with upwards angled end parts 12, providing that the locking pin 5 partly encloses the ribbing (not shown), thereby having a better grip on the ribbing (not shown) when the locking pin 5 is in the locking position.
Fig. 3 shows a head part 7 against a sidewall 13 in the rail section (not shown) where it is possible to see that the head part 7 is pressed against the sidewall or in proximity thereof. It is not possible to rotate the head part 7, whereby the locking pin (not shown) is secured in the correct position. The locking means 3 may only be moved from this position by compressing the spring 9 and simultaneously tilting the connecting member 8, whereby the distance between the sidewall 13 and the head part 7 are increased and rotation of the locking pin 5/locking means 3 is enabled.
Fig. 4 shows a projection 14 and a recess 15 on a platform 16, where the projection 14 is at the top side of the platform 16, and the recess 15 is at the underside of the platform 16. During stacking, the projection 14 will thus engage the recess (not shown) on another platform (not shown), whereby any lateral movement is prevented. The height of the projection 14 is greater than the thickness of the locking pin (not shown) and the depth of the recess 15.
