Abstract

A magnetic pulse forming process is performed by an apparatus (10) and a method that causes the plasticity of a workpiece (12) to be preliminarily increased to facilitate deformation to the desired shape. Initially, a mandrel (16) having a surface and an electrically conductive member (14) are provided. The workpiece (12) is oriented between the surface of the mandrel (16) and the electrically conductive member (14), and a first electrical current (36) is caused to flow through the workpiece (12) and the electrically conductive member (14) so as to increase the plasticity of the workpiece (12). Then, a second electrical current (40) is caused to flow through the electrically conductive member (14) and the workpiece (12) so as to cause to cause the workpiece (12) to be deformed into engagement with the surface of the mandrel (16).
