Abstract

A software-based product identifier (200) includes a description module (210) that collects product description; a parsing module (220) that parses the product description based on recognized attributes, don't care attributes, and unrecognized attributes. The product is identified and mapped to a predefined product based at least in part on the recognized attributes. The unrecognized attribute or attributes may serve as candidate model numbers for previously unknown products.
