Field of lnvention
This invention relates to a pesticidal composition. By way of example, the pesticidal composition can advantageously be employed as a mosquito larvicidal concentrate,
Background of Invention in view of the various harmful effects of synthetic pesticides (mammalian toxicity, residues, pest resistance, pest resurgence etc), the use of botanical pesticides is on the increase. Most botanicals are readily biodegradable and are reportedly devoid of the various harmful effects associated with the use of synthetics.
'Patti' Rabdosia melissoides Benth, (synonymous Pleetranthus melissoides Benth), a wild weed plant which is abundantly available in the Tarai belt of the Kximaon hills and other parts of India or elsewhere, has been found to be source of biologically active materials, effective particularly against larvae of the mosquito such as Culex quinquefasciatus. These materials have a considerable use potential in domestic water air coolers and other situations where water stagnates over time. The present invention pertains to the process of developing emulsifiable concentrate formulations based on its bioactive materials -the essential oil or its pure chemical constituents.
Rabdosia melissoides and/or its phenoiic/non-phenolic constituents have been reportedly used in various pharmaceutical, pesticidal, toiletry, cosmetic etc. preparations. To the best of information, mosquito larvicides based on these are non- existent in any form.
Objects of the Invention
An object of the invention is to propose a pesticidal composition, which can by way of example be advantageously employed as a mosquito larvicidal concentrate. Another object of this invention is to propose a pesticidal composition to control water borne pest such as mosquitos.

The Invention
According to mis invention,, there is provided a pesticidal composition comprising an active constituent selected from thymol, p-cymene present singularly or in combination or contained in an essential oil with or without other phenolic and non phenolic constituents, said active ingredient being present in an amount of 1 to 50% w/w and a solvent therefor.
In accordance with one embodiment of mis invention, the composition comprises said essential constituent and a solvent
In accordance with another embodiment at this invention, the essential oil of R. melissoides or its constituents), particularly thymol or p-cymene, is dissolved in either of eyclohexanone, aromax, iomax, ceenine or xylene and to the solution surfactants
(either of calcium dodeeylbenzene sulphonate,, polyoxyethienated alkyl phenols preferably nonyl phenol, alkyl aryl ethers, sorbitan or polyoxyethylenated sorbitan esters, sodium petroleum sulphonate and the like, as exemplified by the commercial products such as Tweens, Spans, Hyoxid x 45, Emulsol MA, Atlox 3400 B, Unitox 33x, IGSRF 6000 or their likes), either alone or as blends (9:1 to 1:9), at levels of 1-
15% w/w of the final product, are added; the final volume being made so as to obtain preferably 10-25% w/w of the essential oil/ingredient(s) and 1 to 15% of the surfactant in the final solution. The ingredients are homogenised to ensure thorough mixing, before making the final volume/weight The product as obtained above can be applied at the required concentration in water to control water borne pests such as mosquito larvae. It has, been evaluated as a mosquito larvicide against the 4th instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from the ensuring examples.
Examples
Preparation of 25% Emulsifiable Concentrate
Take 25 g of R. melissoides essential oil and dissolve in commercial grade aromax, Add 5 g of Hyoxid X 45 (Aries Agrovet Industries) and mix thoroughly to obtain a homogeneous mass. Make volume with aromax to a final weight of 100 g and mk thoroughly.
Preparation of 10% Emulsifiable Concentrate
Take 10 g of R. melissoides essential oil or thymol or ρ-cymene or its other ingredients and dissolve in solvent ceenine. Add 10 g of a surfactant comprising of Tween 40 and Span 40 (9:1) and homogenise thoroughly. Add ceenine to make final weight of 100g and mix thoroughly.
Physico-chemical properties and Bioactivitv af some recipes
The physico-chemical properties and bioactivity of a few selected recipes are given in Table.

Claims

WE CLAIM:
1. A pesticidal composition comprising an active constituent selected from thymol, p-cymene present singularly or in combination or contained in an essential oil with or without other phenolic and πon phenolic constituents, said active ingredient being present in an amount of 1 to 50% w/w and a solvent therefor.
2. A pesticidal composition as claimed in claim 1 comprising an anionic or non- ionic or blends of ionic, non-ionic or both ionic and non-ionic surfactants.
3. A pesticidal composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said solvent comprises cyclohexanone, aromas, iomax, xylene, solvent ceenine and the like, preferably aromas or iomax or ceenine.
4. A pesticidal composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ionic, non-ionic or the blents of ionic, non-ionic and ionic and non-ionic surfactants is calcium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium petroleum sulphonates, polyosyethyleneated alkyl phenols preferably nonyl phenol, alkyl aryl ethers, sorbitan or polyoxyethyleneated sorbitan esters, and the like, either alone or as blends and present in an amount of 1-15% w/w of the final concentrate.
5. A pesticidal composition as claimed in claim 2, wherein the blends or surfactants, whenever used, employ 9:1 to 1:9 of either of the ingredients in the blend.
6. A pesticidal composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said active constituents comprise extracts of Rabdosiamelisseides Benfh.
7. A pesticidal composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said essential oil is of RabdosiameHssoides Benth.
8. A pesticidal composition as claimed ia claim 1 wherein said essential ingredient is present in an amount of 10-25% w/w. A pesticidal composition as claimed in claim 1 being a water borne pests larvicidal concentrate.
