Abstract

The invention provides a system comprising a holographic optical storage medium (3) and an apparatus for its access, where the holographic optical storage medium can consist both of a surface holographic optical media or a volume holographic optical media. This is achieved by interposing an aperture mask (7) between the apparatus and the holographic medium so that a common sensor (5), suited for the typical data density of a volume hologram, can also be used to read a surface hologram, with its relatively higher data density. Thus the invention provides a common apparatus, which can be used both for volume, suitable for recordable and rewritable applications, and surface holograms, more suitable for ROM applications.
