EMBODIMENTS
The present invention will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown. Like reference numerals in the drawings denote like elements.
FIG. 1 is a view showing a user interface input device 10 used in a digital TV (DTV) according to an embodiment of the present invention. The user interface input device 10 includes a display panel, character (text) input buttons 101 , direction selection/1 Enter1 buttons 102, function control buttons 103, and a sound input port 105. In some cases, the user interface input device 10 may includes a portion of the components.
Firstly, the components of the user interface input device 10 will be described
in brief.
The display panel may be constructed with a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel on which user-input contents are displayed.
The character input buttons 101 may be embodied by allocating characters on the number buttons of a general TV remote controller. The characters may be allocated on the number bottoms according to well-known effective character array schemes or other developing character array schemes.
The direction selection/'Enter' button 102 corresponds to that of conventional
TVs. The direction selection/'Enter' buttons 102 include four X and Y direction selection buttons such as up/down and left/right direction selection buttons and one
'Enter' button 1021. In the embodiment, the 'Enter' button 1021 may be a Z direction selection button having a "pushing" function and up/down scroll functions to be used for three-dimensional interaction in the DTV. The "pushing" function is used as enter/section functions. By using the up/down scroll functions, the user can control the screen in three dimensions.
The function control buttons 103 have various DTV user-interface functions such as a relative position detecting function, a sound recognizing function, and a menu executing function. In addition, the function control buttons 103 have basic control functions such as a H/W control function. The sound input port 105 is constructed with a small microphone through which the user can input desired contents to the DTV by making sounds.
Now, the character input processing function, that is, the first input processing function according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described.
FIG. 2A is a diagram of an input processing device for implementing the character input processing function. FIG. 2B is a flowchart showing an input processing method for implementing the character input processing function. FIG. 2C is a flowchart showing an operation S22 of FIG. 2B.
Han GuI (Korean Alphabet), the Alphabet, numerals, and special characters are allocated to the character input buttons 101. These characters and numerals are input by using the character input buttons 101. In addition to the character input buttons 101 , special buttons 1011 are used to convert types of characters and to select other special characters. A character input function module 20 is built in the DTV to perform the character input processing function. The character input function module 20 includes a character input signal recognizing/processing unit 201 and an input-character display unit 202. A character input signal recognizing/processing unit 201 recognizes "pushing" the buttons 101 and 1011 and performs a predetermined process. The input-character display unit 202 displays user-input characters on a screen of the DTV. The operations of inputting the characters by the user are similar to or the same as those of a general mobile phone.
More specifically, when the user pushes the character input buttons 101 , key values corresponding to the pushed character input buttons 101 are transmitted in a form of ultrasonic waves to the DTV. The character input signal recognizing/processing unit 201 recognizes the ultrasonic waves (S21), converts the decoded ultrasonic waves into electrical signals (S221), and outputs the decoded electrical signals corresponding to the key values to the input-character display unit 202.
The input-character display unit 202 displays the user-input character on the screen of the DTV based on the decoded electrical signals corresponding to the key values. The input-character display unit 202 corresponds to a display driving circuit of the DTV. The display driving operation S222 of the DTV may be implemented by using one of well-known techniques of which description is omitted.
Now, the sound input processing function, that is, the first input processing function using a sound recognizing technique according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described.
FIG. 3A is a diagram of the structure of a sound input processing device for implementing the sound input processing function according to the embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 3B is a flowchart showing a sound input processing method for implementing the sound input processing function according to the embodiment of the present invention.
When a user selects a channel of a broadcasting company in a conventional
TV system, the user has to memorize the corresponding channel number. Otherwise, the user searches the channel by manually manipulating a remote controller step by step. However, in the embodiment of the present invention, the user uses the sound input processing function of the input processing device.
Firstly, a macro function for mapping a short word or phase to predetermined channel keys or predetermined function keys is defined and stored in a macro function database. When the user speaks the word or phase, the corresponding sound is input through a sound input port 105 to the user interface input device 10. A sound recognizing module 30 having a sound recognizing function is built in the DTV, so that the recognized sound input can be equivalently treated as the input performed by pushing buttons of the user interface input device 10.
The sound recognizing module 30 includes a sound signal recognizing unit
301 which receives and recognizes a sound signal input from the sound input port 105, a signal converting unit 302 which converts the sound signal into an electrical signal, and a macro function performing unit 303 which executes contents corresponding to the user-input sound by performing the macro function.
Assuming an 'ABC broadcasting company is indicated by channel number 11 , the user speaks the word 'ABC to input the sound 1ABC to the sound input port 105
while pushing the sound recognizing function button 1042. The user interface input device 10 transmits the corresponding sound signal to the DTV in a form of ultrasonic waves. A sound signal recognizing unit 301 in the DTV recognizes the sound signal (S31). The signal converting unit 302 converts the sound signal output from the sound signal recognizing unit 301 into an analog electrical signal. The analog electrical signal is converted into a digital electrical signal by an ADC (analog-to-digital converter). As an example, the digital signal corresponding to the sound 'ABC may be ASCII codes of the characters ABC. The macro function performing unit 303 performs the macro function by which the sound 'ABC is mapped into a series of operations (S32). For example, the sound 'ABC may be mapped into a series of operations: Setting TV Mode + Selecting Button 1 + Selecting Button 1 + Selecting Button 'Enter1. Therefore, the result of the macro function is equivalent to a series of key values obtained by pushing the corresponding buttons. As described above, the macro function is defined and stored in the macro function database in advance. The macro function can be retrieved from the macro function database before it is performed. In addition, the result of the macro function corresponds to the user-input contents. Therefore, in the example, a program of the ABC broadcasting company is shown on the screen of the DTV. In addition to the above example, the sound recognizing function may include a volume adjusting function, an application selecting function, control button selecting functions, and others used for the DTV.
Now, the user interface input device 10 of FIG. 1 will be described with reference to FIG. 4a. FIG. 4A is a diagram of the structure of the user interface input device 10 capable of displaying user-input contents according to an embodiment of the present invention. The external appearance of the user interface input device 10 is shown in FIG. 1.
The user interface input device 10 includes an input request detecting unit 41 , a key value decoding unit 42, a display driving unit 43, and a display panel 44.
When the user pushes the character input buttons 102 or the sound recognizing function button 1042, the input request detecting unit 41 detects the pushing operation and transmits a corresponding input request signal to the key value decoding unit 42. The key value decoding unit 42 decodes the input request signal to obtain the corresponding key value. In response to the key value, the display driving unit 43 generates a display driving signal corresponding to the user-input contents based on the key value. The display panel 44 displays the user-input contents based on the display driving signal.
After the user checks the user-input contents displayed on the display panel
44, the user pushes the 'Enter' button 1031 to transmit the key value to the DTV. Based on the key value, the aforementioned two input processing functions are performed in the DTV.
FIG. 4B is a view showing sound input operations of the user interface input device of FIG. 4A. In the sound input operations, as described above, the user speaks the word 'ABC corresponding to the ABC broadcasting company indicated by channel number 11. As the user-input contents, TV CH 11 ' is displayed on the display panel of the user interface input device 10. While the user checks the user- input contents displayed on the display panel, the user can adjust the user-input contents by pushing other buttons or making other sounds.
While the present invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to exemplary embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
