Abstract

This invention relates to the engineered biosynthesis of new aromatic polyketides through novel starter unit incorporation. By coexpressing the proteins encoding for a PKS priming module, along with the components of a typical bacterial aromatic PKS in Streptomyces coelicolor, we are able to 1) biosynthesize aromatic polyketides with unique structures and cyclization patterns, and 2) insert uncommon functionalities into previously known aromatic polyketides. The invention can be applied to the biosynthesis of new, therapeutically useful polyketides.
