Abstract

A book (10) includes a number of pages (12) bound together at one edge of each page with a sequence of successive images (16.1-16.n) applied to a selected number of the pages (12). The sequence of images is taken of a moving object or of a changing scene at intervals, thereby to represent movement in the images when flipping pages sequentially to reveal the images.

Description

PUBLISHING
THIS INVENTION relates to publishing. In particular, the invention relates to a book and to a method of applying images on pages of a book.
In this specification, the term book is intended to include all forms of books having a number of pages bound together, such as magazines, booklets, hardbacks, paperbacks, and the like.
According to the invention, there is provided a book which includes a number of pages bound together at one edge of each page; and a sequence of images applied to a selected number of the pages, the sequence of images being taken of a moving object or of a changing scene at intervals, thereby to represent movement in the images when flipping pages sequentially to reveal the images.
Further according to the invention, there is provided a method of applying images to pages of a book, the method including applying a sequence of images of a moving object or of a changing scene taken at intervals, to a selected number of pages of the book, such that successive images of the sequence are applied successively to the selected number of pages.
The sequence of images as applied to the selected number of pages may be in alignment or substantially in alignment. They may also be in different relative positions on successive pages to which the images are applied, e.g. a gradually increasing or decreasing distance from an edge or corner on successive pages so that, when flipping the pages, the image appears to move relative to the edge or corner. The images may be photographic images and may be applied to the pages by printing. The images may be applied to a number of consecutive pages or group of pages of the book. The images may show the object or scene at regular intervals to simulate continuous movement in the image, but in certain circumstances, could also be at irregular intervals. The time intervals at which the images are taken may be constant, but could also be variable. Thus the time lapse between successive images may be constant.
In particular, the images may be of an object or objects moving in the scene, or of a scene that changes over time.
The method may include selecting a sequence of images, prior to compiling the book. For example, depending on the rate of change in the scene, images may be selected with a shorter or longer time interval between successive images.
The method may include selecting the images based on the number of pages to which the images are to be applied and the duration of the scene change that is to be shown. In particular, the total number of images in the sequence may be divided by the number of pages on which the images are to be applied. The images may then be selected such that the time interval between successive selected images is the same.
The method may include the prior step of recording a series of images over a period of time. The number of images may be recorded with a time lapse recorder. In another embodiment of the invention, a set of images may be recorded of which a subset of images, corresponding to the number of pages to which the images are to be applied, can be selected such that the interval between the selected images is constant. For example, the images may be recorded with a digital recording apparatus such as a digital video recorder, and a number of individual images recorded at regular intervals may then be selected for printing, the number of images corresponding to the number of pages to be printed.
The images may therefore be captured still images. The term captured still images in this context is understood to include photographs, individual frames selected from video footage, and the like.
The images may be applied to a portion of the page which is easy to flip through remote from the bound edge, such as adjacent any one of the unbound edges of the pages, or in one of the two unbound corners of the pages of the book.
In the embodiment where the book is a magazine or similar publication, the images may be of advertisements, thereby to provide a new way of advertising.
In the embodiment where the book is a novel, the images may complement the story-line of the novel. For example, if a movie relating to the novel has been made, the images may be of selected frames of the movie, thereby to depict a scene from that movie.
The invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the following diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a book in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 shows a set of images and a subset of images, selected as part of a method of applying images on pages of a book, in accordance with the invention. In Figure 1 , reference numeral 10 refers to a book in accordance with the invention. The book includes a number of pages, generally indicated by reference numeral 12. The pages 12 are bound at one side to define a spine 14 of the book 10.
The book 10 includes a sequence of photographic images 16.1 to 16.n printed on a number of pages 12. Each of the images 16.1 to 16. n is printed adjacent an unbound side 18 of the book 1 0. In the example shown, the images 16.1 to 16.n are printed in a top right hand corner of each page 12.
The images 16.1 to 16.n are indexed to appear in aligned positions on each of the consecutive pages 12, but they could also be located at different positions.
When the pages 12 are flipped through, the images 16.1 to 16.n which are of a scene which contains moving objects simulates the movement in the scene.
In the example shown, the images 16.1 to 16.n are printed on consecutive pages 12, but in other embodiments, pages that do not include an image in the sequence may interrupt the sequence of images. However, the inventor believes that the simulated movement will not be interrupted by a single, dissimilar page, provided that the speed at which the pages are flipped through, is high enough.
The book 10 shown in Figure 1 was printed in accordance with a method of applying images 16.1 to 16.n on pages 12 of a book, in accordance with the invention. The method includes applying a sequence of photograp hic images 16.1 to 16.n to a number of consecutive pages 12 of the book 10, in a position on the pages 12 in the top right hand corner of each page.
Referring to Figure 2, a sequence 22 of recorded photographic images 20.1 to 20.11 is shown. The images 20.1 to 20.11 have been taken of a scene which shows a side view of a ball 21 moving over an obstacle 23. As can be seen, images 16.1 to 16.6 have been selected from the images 20.1 to 20.11 with the images 20.2, 20.4, 2O.6, 20.8, 20.10, not being selected for printing. The selected series is referred to by reference numeral 24. The selected images 16.1 to 16.6 show the scene at constant time intervals, although each second image 20.2, 2O.4, 20.6, 20.8, and 20.10 has been omitted. The selected images 24 are shown printed in the book 10 in Figure 1.
It is to be appreciated that, depending on the number of pages 12 on which the images are to be applied, the sequence of images may be selected to show the image at constant time intervals on the pages.
In use, when a user flips through the book 10, the images 16.1 to 16.n simulate the movement of the object in the scene.
The inventor believes that the invention, as illustrated provides a new method of simulating movement in photographic images printed in a book. The inventor also believes that the invention, as illustrated, may add to the appeal of books, and in particular of magazin es, and that the simulated movement will introduce a new method of publish) ing books.
