Abstract

The invention concerns customized provision of services (S2) to users of television receiver sets (TV1, TV2) connected to a service provider via a bi-directional link (L1, L2) comprising prior steps of defining for the service a generic identifier (ID S21g), associating the generic identifier with specific identifiers (ID_S211s,ID_S212s) each indicating a of service provision specific modality of service provision for each receiver set, selecting a single specific identifier and storing, in a correspondence table (T1, T2) associated with the receiver set, the generic identifier and the selected specific identifier. The method further comprises steps of inserting in the stream (P2) the generic identifier (ID_S21g) (S2) and broadcasting the stream. This is followed by a step of determining, from the received generic identifier (ID_S21g) and the correspondence table associated with the television receiver set, the specific identifier associated with the television receiver set; and providing the service to the receiver set user in accordance with the specific modality indicated by the specific identifier.

PERSONALIZED PROVISION OF TELEVISION SERVICES

INTERACTIVE AND ASSOCIATED TELEVISION RECEIVERS

The present invention relates to the field of services delivered in the context of the broadcasting of television programs commonly called interactive TV services. Traditional television content is then enriched by services available on a network other than the TV broadcast network. This complementary network may be for example the network of an Internet access provider. The services correspond, for example, to the provision of resources that may be complementary pages of program guides, trailers, film-making magazines ("making-of"), images, textual data on a film in courses etc. These resources are accessible through an ISP server.

Generally for a given service, an identifier of said service is inserted in the broadcast stream, for example in the frame interval of an analog TV signal or in a data channel of a digital TV signal. This identifier is for example a URL type address ("Universal Resource Locator") which identifies in the network of the service provider the resource to be delivered. The broadcast stream is received by suitable TV receivers on the one hand to view the broadcast television programs and on the other hand extract the identifiers of the associated services from the broadcast stream. The television receivers considered below furthermore comprise means (notably an Internet browser) making it possible to access, via a bidirectional link with the service provider, the services proposed in the broadcast stream.

The presence of an identifier inserted in a program is indicated for example by the display on the screen of the TV receiver of an icon representative of the proposed service. If the user selects the icon for example using a remote control associated with the TV receiver, it establishes an Internet connection and requires access to the resource corresponding to the inserted URL. The service thus consists in providing the resource indicated by the identifier inserted in the broadcast stream. Such interactive TV service delivery systems are for example described in EP 0 901 284 and US 6 349 410.

Inserting the identifier of a service in the broadcast stream causes the service provider to provide the same resource to the users. Or it may be interesting that the resource delivered to users is chosen according to factors such as the maximum rate allowed on the communication link between the receiver and the service provider. Thus, in the context of a service corresponding to an identifier inserted in association with a film contained in the stream, the service provider may wish to deliver a resource with a URL1 corresponding to a video presenting textual data, the making-of and Movie bonuses to a user whose link is an asymmetric digital subscriber line or an Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) with a maximum throughput of 512 kilobits / second (kb / s). And it may wish to deliver a resource with a URL2 corresponding only to textual data relating to the film, to a user whose link is a maximum bit rate link equal to 128 kb / s.

In this example, the techniques of the prior art lead to the following alternative: either a unique identifier corresponding to the URL1 or the URL2 address is inserted, and in this case, the users can have access only to only one of the two resources;

- Or both identifiers are inserted, which on the one hand encumbers the flow and causes the provision of partially redundant information indicated by the display of two icons. On the other hand, selecting the icon corresponding to the URLI allows the user of a 128 kb / s line to be able to select access to the corresponding resource. But the loading will monopolize the line for a very long time that may seem acceptable to the user. The present invention aims to overcome these disadvantages of the prior art.

For this purpose, according to a first aspect, the invention proposes a method of personalized provision of services to users of television receivers. These receivers are able to receive television contents broadcast in which at least one identifier relating to a service offered by a service provider is inserted. They are connected by a two-way communication link to the service provider through which the service is delivered. The method comprises the following preliminary steps:

a step of defining for the service of at least one generic identifier relating to said service and a step of associating said generic identifier with a plurality of specific service identifiers each indicating a specific mode of supply of said service; and for each receiver, a step of selecting a unique specific identifier from the plurality of specific identifiers associated with the generic identifier and a storage step, in a correspondence table associated with said receiver, of the generic identifier and the specific identifier selected. The method further comprises the following steps:

an insertion step in a broadcast television content of a generic identifier relating to a service and a step of broadcasting said content;

a step of determining, from the generic identifier delivered in the content and from the correspondence table associated with said receiver, the specific identifier associated with the receiver;

and a step of providing the user of said service device corresponding to the generic identifier in accordance with the specific modality indicated by the associated specific identifier. The different modes of supply of a service delivered by the service provider may for example be the provision of a different content depending on the user (with reference to the example cited above, the delivery of a video for a certain type of user and the delivery of textual data for a second type of user). They can still be related to the designation of applications to be used by the receiver for the display of the resource or the designation of specific files.

Following a second aspect of. According to the invention, the invention proposes a system for the personalized provision of services comprising means for implement the steps of a method according to the first aspect of the invention.

According to a third aspect of the invention, the invention proposes a television receiver able to receive diffused television contents in which each identifier of a set of identifiers relating to at least one service offered by a service provider is inserted, said device being connected via a bidirectional communication link to the service provider, said set of identifiers relating to said service comprising at least one generic identifier associated with a plurality of specific identifiers each indicating a specific mode of supply of said service service and a unique specific identifier among the plurality of specific identifiers associated with the generic identifier having been previously selected for each receiver. The receiver comprises: a correspondence table and means for storing, in the course of a receiver configuration step, in the table, the identifier and the specific identifier selected for the receiver;

means for receiving broadcast television content comprising the inserted generic identifier, determining the specific identifier associated with the receiver from this generic identifier and from the correspondence table;

selection means able to select a service after reception of the content by the receiver and extraction of the generic identifier inserted into said content; means for receiving the service according to the specific modality indicated by the specific identifier.

According to a fourth aspect, respectively a fifth aspect of the invention, the invention proposes a computer program to be installed in a service provider server, respectively in a computer of a television receiver, comprising instructions for implementing implementing the steps, which are the responsibility of the service provider, respectively to the receiver, of a method according to the first aspect of the invention. The broadcaster 2 comprises a base 4 of sets of identifiers, storing a set of identifiers I for each service S proposed in association with a broadcast television program P. The system 1 furthermore comprises a service provider 5. This service provider 5 comprises a main server 6, associated with a plurality of databases 7. It furthermore comprises a service determination module 8, associated with a service base. service and customer data 9 storing information relating to interactive services offered to users of receivers able to require them, as well as information relating to said users and / or receivers. The service provider 5 is adapted to deliver services S to the users of these receivers TV1,..., TVn via respective bidirectional links L1,..., Ln. These L1 Ln links are adapted to allow communications in accordance with the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP).

The system 1 further comprises receivers TV1, ..., TVn. Each receiver comprises a remote control 15, a display screen 10, a module 11 of decoding, an extraction module 12 associated with a correspondence table T, an Internet browser 13 and a TCP / IP interface 14.

Depending on the case, the receiver is a digital television or an analog television set with a box ("Set-Top-Box") that provides decoding, extraction, Internet connection and navigation.

In a pre-broadcast phase of programs and associated service proposals, broadcaster 2 and service provider 5 coordinate to decide which programs will be associated with services, and each of these programs, what services will be offered to the users of the TV1, ..., TVn receivers.

A set of identifiers I is defined, by the broadcaster 2 in collaboration with the service provider 5, for each of the services S intended to be inserted into the stream with an associated program. Each set of identifiers I comprises one or more identifiers.

Some services are defined by the service provider 5 so as to be delivered in various forms to receiver users. They are hereinafter referred to as "customizable" services.

When a service must be provided in a unique form to the receivers, the set of identifiers relating to the service comprises at least one identifier equal to a URI ("Uniform Resource Identifier") address identifying an Internet resource among an Internet page. (in this case, the URI is a URL), an image, an animation, a video clip or a program. The set of identifiers relating to the service may also for example comprise one or more complementary identifiers, for example an identifier indicating a particular program hosted in the receivers (for example a video player) thus controlling the receivers to use this program when the implementation of the resource identified by the URI. Another complementary identifier is for example an identifier indicating a particular file stored in the receivers. The presence, in the set of identifiers relating to a service, of a file identifier command for example the receiver to use the file indicated when setting implement the resource identified by the URI on the device (to read data or to record).

When a service is customizable, that is to say it is defined by the service provider 5 to be provided in various forms to the receivers, the set of identifiers relating to the service comprises at least one identifier generic.

This generic identifier has the prefix "LOCAL" followed by a generic identifier name relating to the service. It is thus of the form "LOCAL generic identifier name". It can be relative to a URI address, a program or a file.

More precisely, if the generic identifier is relative to a URI address, it is of the form "LOCALu rijdentifier generic of uri". If the generic identifier is relative to a program, it is of the form "LOCALclassid_generic program identifier". If the generic identifier is relative to a file, it is of the form "LOCALfilejdentifier generic file".

The service provider associates each generic identifier with specific identifiers.

Thus a generic identifier relating to a URI address is associated with specific identifiers each equal to a URI address. A generic identifier relating to a program is associated with specific identifiers each equal to a program designation and a generic identifier relating to a file is associated with specific identifiers each equal to a file designation. The generic identifiers are defined by the broadcaster 2 in collaboration with the service provider 5. The specific identifiers associated respectively with the generic identifiers are defined by the service provider 5.

The list of specific identifiers associated with each generic identifier of customizable service is stored in the service and customer base 9 of the service provider 5.

In a prior phase, for each generic identifier defined, the service provider 5 selects for each receiver a unique specific identifier among the specific identifiers associated with said generic identifier. This specific identifier defines a particular modality for providing the customizable service.

This selection is performed by the service provider's service determination module 8 based on one or more factors defined in the service and customer database 9.

These factors include, for example, the capacity of the communication link between the device and the service provider 2, the subscription subscribed by the user, a list of preferences communicated by the user, the hardware version and / or the version software of elements included in the receiving device.

In one embodiment, once the selection of the specific identifier has been carried out for each generic identifier of each service intended for a particular receiver, the service provider 5 stores this correspondence between each generic identifier and the specific identifier selected in the table. correspondence T of the particular receiver. The set of identifiers 12 defined for the service S2 comprises a generic identifier ID_S2 _1g named 'LOCALuri_servplusvideo'.

This generic identifier "LOCALuri_servplusvideo" is associated with the two specific identifiers ID_S2n _s and ID_S2 _12s of value respectively the URI addresses "http://www.supplier.videoplus.com/clientsup512" and "http: //www.providername.videoplus. com / clientsinf512 ".

The list of generic identifiers and associated specific identifiers is stored in the service and customer base 9.

For each receiver, the service determination module 8 of the service provider 5 selects a specific identifier for each generic identifier according to the selection factors also stored in the base 9.

The course of the steps is detailed below with reference to TV1 and TV2 television devices, but it is carried out in practice on all television sets TV1 to TVn.

For the service S2, the selected selection factor is the maximum capacity of the link connecting the receiver and the service provider 5 as stored in the service and customer base 9.

The link L1 is for example a link at 512kb / s and the link L2 is for example a link at 128kb / s.

Thus for the receiver TV1, takes place a step of selection of the specific identifier ID_S2n _s among specific identifiers ID_S2i _1s and ID_S2i _2s associated with the generic identifier ID_S2 _1g . And for the receiver TV2, takes place a step of selection of the specific identifier ID_S2i _2s .

Once the selection has been made for a receiver, each generic identifier and the corresponding selected specific identifier are recorded in the correspondence table of said device.

Thus, in the correspondence table T1 of the receiver TV1, the specific identifier ID_S2n _s is stored in association with the generic identifier ID_S2i _g and in the correspondence table T2 of the receiver TV2, the specific identifier ID_S2i _2s is stored in association with the generic identifier ID_S2i _g .

All the steps indicated above are carried out before the broadcast of the stream inserting the set of identifiers 12 of the customizable service S2.

In one embodiment, the loading of the correspondence table into the receiver can be done during the initial configuration of the receiver. During this initial configuration, the service provider 5 sends the IP parameters to the device according to the protocol for example

Then the stream thus formed is broadcast.

Each receiver receives the stream that is decoded by the decoding module 11. The extraction module 12 extracts the sets of identifiers relating to services from the stream and generates the display on the display screen 10 of an icon indicating an associated service proposed during the displays relating to the programs P1 and P2. .

When the user of a receiver TV1, TV2 ... TVn selects an icon indicating the unique service S1 (associated with the set of identifier 11 having as identifier the URI address

This mode of implementation is of particular interest when, for example, the set of receivers consists of two technological families and the receivers of the same family each have several video playback programs.

For each receiver and a customizable service, a URI address is indicated either by an identifier of the set of identifiers extracted, or by a specific identifier determined using the mapping table of the device. The invention allows to specify to the receivers of a family to use a particular program among the reading programs which they have. The invention makes it possible to specify the receivers of the other family to use another particular program among the reading programs available to them. Each of the two particular programs is the program best adapted to the reading of the video sequence to be broadcast.

The invention thus allows the provision of personalized services according to the receivers, the communication links connecting them to the service provider, and / or users of said receivers.

The personalization of the service may relate to the content (various URIs), the content reproduction (various video playback programs) or the reading or storage of associated data in a defined file.

All the steps of the invention, for example according to the embodiment described above with reference to the drawings, are implemented in computer programs executing respectively on a computer in each receiver and on a computer. the service provider. Furthermore, the invention has been described above in connection with the provision of a service once it has been selected by the user of a digital receiver.

In another implementation mode, the selection can be made automatically by the receiver without user intervention (for example following an initial configuration of the receiving device).

The embodiment described above considered only one service per program. In a different embodiment, several services are associated with the same television program. Claims

1. A method of personalized provision of services (S2) to users of television receivers (TV1, TV2), said receivers being able to receive broadcast television contents (P2) in which at least one identifier relating to a service proposed by a service provider (5) is inserted, said receivers being connectable by a bidirectional communication link (L1.L2) to the service provider, said service being deliverable via said link, said method comprising the following preliminary steps:

a step of definition for the service of at least one generic identifier (ID_S2i _g ) and a step of associating said generic identifier with a plurality of specific identifiers (ID_S2n _s , ID_S2i2s) of the service each indicating a specific modality of supply said service;

and, for each receiver, a step of selecting a unique specific identifier from among the plurality of specific identifiers associated with the generic identifier and a storage step, in a correspondence table (T1.T2) associated with said receiver, the generic identifier and the specific identifier selected; the method further comprising the steps of:

a step of insertion into a televisual content (P2) of the generic identifier (ID_S2 _1g ) relative to the service (S2) and a step of broadcasting said content;
