Abstract

The present invention discloses a system and methods for biometric security using biometrics in a smartcard transaction system. The biometric security system also includes a biometric sensor that detects biometric samples and a device for verifying biometric samples. In one embodiment, the biometric security system includes a smartcard configured with a biometric sensor. In another embodiment, the system includes a reader configured with a biometric sensor. The device for verifying samples compares the biometric samples with information stored on databases.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 11 December 2006 (11.12.2006)
1. A smartcard transaction system configured with a biometric security device, said system comprising: a smartcard configured to communicate with a reader, wherein said reader and said biometric security device are configured to communicate with a host; said biometric security device comprises a biometric sensor configured on said smartcard, said biometric sensor configured to detect a proffered biometric sample to generate data representing said proffered biometric sample, and a verification device configured to verify said proffered biometric sample to facilitate a transaction; and said system configured to use said data representing said proffered biometric sample as a variable in an encryption calculation to secure at least one of user information, smartcard information and transaction data.
2. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biometric security device is configured to communicate with said host via at least one of said smartcard, said reader, and a network.
3. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1, wherein said system is configured to use said data representing said proffered biometric sample as at least one of a private key and a public key to facilitate encryption security measures associated with said transaction .
4. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biometric security device is configured to log at least one of a detected biometric sample, a processed biometric sample and a stored biometric sample.

The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , further including a database configured to store a data packet, wherein said data packet comprises at least one of said proffered biometric samples, registered biometric samples, proffered user information, registered user information, terrorist information, and criminal information.
6. The smartcard transaction system of claim 5, wherein said database is contained in at least one of said smartcard, said reader, said biometric security device, a remote server, a merchant server and said smartcard system.
7. The smartcard transaction system of claim 6, wherein said system is configured to use said data representing said proffered biometric sample in generating a message authentication code .
8. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biometric sensor is configured with at least one of an optical scanner, a capacitance scanner, a video camera, an LCD screen and a digitizing tablet.

The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biometric security device is configured to detect and verify finger print minutia including at least one of ridge endings, bifurcation, lakes, enclosures, short ridges, dots, spurs, crossovers, pore size, pore location, loops, whorls, and arches.
10. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biometric security device is configured to detect and verify facial scan characteristics including at least one of noda! points, the distance between the eyes, the width of the nose, the jaw line, and the depth of the eye sockets.
11. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biometric security device is configured to detect and verify signature scan characteristics including at least one of shape, speed, stroke, stylus pressure and timing information.
12. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1, wherein said biometric security device is configured to detect and verify at least one of blood flow, correctly aligned ridges, pupil dilation, pressure, motion and body heat.

13. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biornetiϊc sθcurity device is configured to compare said proffered biomβtric sample with a stored biornetric sample.

The smartcard transaction system of claim 13, wherein said biometric security device is configured to compare at least one characteristic of said proffered and stored biometric samples including minutia, vascular patterns, prints, waveforms, odorants, nodal points, reference points, size, shape, thermal patterns, blood flow, and body heat.
15. The smartcard transaction system of claim 13, wherein said biometric security device is at least one of a third-party security vendor device and a protocol/sequence controller.
16. The smartcard transaction system of claim 13, wherein said stored biometric sample comprises a registered biometric sample.
17. The smartcard transaction system of claim 16, wherein said registered biometric sample is associated with at least one of; personal information, credit card information, debit card information, savings account information, and loyalty point information.
18. The smartcard transaction system of claim 17, wherein different registered biometric samples are associated with a different one of: personal information, credit card information, debit card information, savings account information, and loyalty point information.
19. The smartcard transaction system of claim 17, wherein said registered biometric sample is primarily associated with at least one of first user information, wherein said first information comprises personal information, credit card information, debit card information, savings account information, and loyalty point information, and wherein said registered biometric sample is secondarily associated with at least one of second, user information, wherein said second information comprises personal information, credit card information, debit card information,
110 savings account information, and loyalty point information, where second user information is different than first user information.
20. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said smartcard transaction system is further configured to begin mutual authentication upon verification of said proffered biometric sample,
21. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , system is further configured to use said data representing said proffered biometric sample as a message authentication code and as at least one of a private key and a public key to secure at least one of user information and transaction data ,
22. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said biometric security device is configured to facilitate substantially simultaneous access to goods and initiation of authentication for a subsequent purchase of said goods .
23. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said verification device is configured to facilitate at least one of access, activation of a second device, a financial transaction, and a non-financial transaction.
24. The smartcard transaction system of claim 1 , wherein said verification device is configured to facilitate the use of at least one secondary security procedure.
25. A method for facilitating biometric security in a smartcard transaction system comprising: receiving data from a smartcard via a reader, wherein said reader communicates with said system; detecting a proffered biometric at a sensor, wherein said sensor communicates with said system to obtain a proffered biometric sample; generating data representing said proffered biometric sample; using said data representing said proffered biometric sample as a variable in an encryption calculation to secure at least one of user information and transaction data;
111 verifying said proffered biometric sample; and authorizing a transaction upon verification of said proffered biometric sample.
26. The method of claim 25, wherein said step of detecting further comprises detecting said proffered biometric at said sensor configured to communicate with said system via at least one of said smartcard, said reader, and a network,
27. The method of claim 25, wherein said step of detecting said proffered biometric comprises detecting said proffered biometric at one of an optical scanner, a capacitance scanner, a video camera, an LCD screen and a digitizing tablet.
28. The method of claim 25, wherein said step of detecting comprises at least one of: detecting, storing, and processing said proffered biometric sample.
29. The method of claim 25, further comprising using said data representing said proffered biometric sample as at least one of a private key, a public key, and a message authentication code to facilitate transaction security measures.
30. The method of claim 25, further comprising using said data representing said proffered biometric sample in generating a message authentication code and as at least one of a private key and a public key .
31. The method of claim 25, further comprising using said data representing said proffered biometric sample to facilitate substantially simultaneous access to goods and initiation of authentication for a subsequent purchase of said goods .
32. The method of claim 25, wherein said step of verifying comprises comparing said proffered biometric sample with a stored biometric sample.

The method of claim 32, wherein said step of comparing said proffered biometric sample with said stored biometric sample comprises storing, processing and comparing at least one of fingerprint minutia, a nodal point, signature speed, signature shape, signature stroke, stylus pressure, signature timing, voice patterns, nucleotides, code sequences, regulatory regions, initiation and stop codons, exon borders, iπtron borders, biometric reference points, blood pressure characteristics, voice print waveforms in the time domain, energy content in voice prints across the frequency domain, stochastic models of voice prints, template models of voice prints, hand shape, finger length, finger thickness, finger curvature, auditory emission frequency, auditory emission wavelength, auditory emission vibrations, smellprints, keystroke scans, eye surface patterns, and blood vessel patterns.
34. The method of claim 32, wherein said step of comparing said proffered biometric sample with said stored biometric sample comprises comparing said proffered biometric sample with at least one of a biometric sample of a criminal, a terrorist, and a smartcard user.
35. The method of claim 25, wherein said step of verifying comprises verifying said proffered biometric sample using information contained on at least one of a local database, a remote database, and a third-party controlled database.
36. The method of claim 25, wherein said step of verifying comprises verifying said proffered biometric sample using one of a protocol/sequence controller and a third-party security vendor.
37. A method for facilitating biometric security In a smartcard transaction system comprising: proffering a biometric to a biometric sensor communicating with said system to initiate verification of a proffered biometric sample for facilitating authorization of a transaction.
38. The method for of claim 37, further comprising registering at least one biometric sample with an authorized sample receiver.

The method of claim 38, wherein said step of registering further comprises at least one of: contacting said authorized sample receiver, proffering said biometric to said authorized sample receiver, processing said biometric to obtain said proffered biometric sample, associating said proffered biometric sample with user information,, verifying said proffered biometric sample, and storing said proffered biometric sample upon verification.
40. The method of claim 37, wherein said step of proffering comprises proffering said biometric to at least one of an optical scanner, a capacitance scanner, a video camera, an LCD screen and a digitizing tablet.
41. The method of claim 37, wherein said step of proffering further comprises proffering said biometric to said biometric sensor communicating with said system to initiate at least one of: storing, comparing, and verifying said biometricsample.
42. The method of claim 37, wherein said step of proffering a biometric to a biometric sensor communicating with said system to initiate verification further comprises processing database information, wherein said database information is contained in at least one of a smartcard, a smartcard reader, said sensor, a remote server, a merchant server and said smartcard transaction system.
43. The method of claim 37, wherein said step of proffering said biometric to said biometric sensor communicating with said system to initiate verification further comprises comparing said proffered btometric sample with a stored biometric sample.
44. The method of claim 43, wherein said step of comparing comprises comparing said proffered biometric sample to said stored biometric sample by using at least one of a third-party security vendor device and a protocol/sequence controller.
45. The method of claim 43, wherein said step of comparing said proffered biometric sample to said stored biometric sample comprises comparing at
114 least one of proffered and stored fingerprint miπutia, nodal points, signature speed, signature shape, signature stroke, stylus pressure, signature timing, voice patterns, nucleotides, code sequences, regulatory regions, initiation and stop codons, exoπ borders, intron borders, biometric reference points, blood pressure characteristics, voice print waveforms in the time domain, energy content in voice prints across the frequency domain, stochastic models of voice prints, template models of voice prints, hand shape, finger length, finger thickness, finger curvature, auditory emission frequency, auditory emission wavelength, auditory emission vibrations, smellprints, keystroke scans, eye surface patterns, and blood vessel patterns.
46. The method of claim 37, wherein said step of proffering said biometric to said biometric sensor communicating with said system further comprises using said biometric sensor to detect at least one of blood flow, correctly aligned ridges, pupil dilation, pressure, motion and body heat.
47. The method of claim 37, wherein said step of proffering said biometric to said biometric sensor communicating with said system to initiate verification further comprises at least one of detecting, processing and storing at least one second proffered biometric sample.
48. The method of claim 37, wherein said step of proffering said biometric to said biometric sensor communicating with said system to initiate verification further comprises the use of at least one secondary security procedure.
