Abstract

A box-shaped piece of furniture (1) has a front (4, 5, 6), a back (16), four legs (3) and two side walls and is closed upwardly by a horizontal plate (2). The piece of furniture is provided with an extension plate (7) having two legs (9) on its lower side which can rest in their respective recesses (13, 14) provided in the upper edge of the front of the piece of furniture, or can rest in recesses formed by three spaced beams (10, 11, 12) which are disposed on a longitudinal strip. In an embodiment, the extension plate (7) is secured by means of hinges (20) to a frame which has two recesses (22) having dimensions which correspond to the thickness and the width of the extension plate. The box-shaped piece of furniture, which is configured as a chest, may hereby be used as a conventional chest and also as a baby changing table, as the extension plate and the horizontal plate are flush with each other and together have a depth which is expedient for use as a baby changing table, as the extension plate is securely fixed between the front of the chest and the upper plate of the chest.
