Description

COASTER TO HOLDER This invention relates to improvements to coasters that are used with drinking vessels to prevent dripping of condensation from the vessels and marring of surface finishes on which the vessels may be rested. In particular the invention relates to coasters that can be converted into hand held holders for bottles or cans containing cold beverage.
It is known that coasters are provided as a matter of course in most hotels, clubs and bars etc.
However, hand held holdersfor bottles or cans containing cold beverage are not normally provided and a problem exists whereby the hand of the drinker becomes uncomfortable holding a chilled bottle or can. There is also the added nuisance to the drinker of their hand becoming wet due to condensation that is present on the outside of the previously chilled bottle or can.
Some hotels, clubs and bars etc sell rigid type hand held holders for bottles or cans containing cold beverage but these can be expensive and very often they are not available. A few hotels, clubs and bars etc will lend a drinker a rigid type holder if asked but there can be hygiene problems with this option.
The prior art includes many drinking vessel holders and coasters but none were found just like the present invention.
One suggestion in the prior art (Pat. No. US 2004011801) is for a combination drinking vessel sleeve that can be folded flat and function as a coaster.
There can be a problem with folded drinking vessel sleeve material such as cardboard etc because while in a folded state it tends not to lay perfectly flat and can be somewhat springy when placed on a table or bar top thereby presenting a somewhat unstable base on which to stand a drinking vessel especially if for example, the vessel happened to be a tall stemmed wine glass. There is a strong possibility that such a wine glass would wobble and thus be unstable. Another suggestion in the prior art (Pat. No. US 6026983) is for a combination beverage sleeve with a coaster attached to it.
However this type is not suitable for use as a coaster only. Another suggestion in the prior art (Pat . App . No . AU199718633) is for an insulating wrap for a beverage container such as a bottle or can. It is suggested that this wrap could be attached to a bottle or can with adhesive , this would render the wrap nonreusable , also the wrap is not suitable to function as a coaster.
These problems are overcome by the present invention which provides a dual purpose coaster made of cardboard , being flat and generally of oblong shape, having an underside face and an opposite upperside face upon which movable flaps are positioned and also a means for attaching another identical coaster so as to form a wraparound holder for a bottle or can of cold beverage supported underneath by said flaps.
The main purpose but not restricted to for the present invention is to make it readily available to drinkers in hotels, clubs and bars etc where it will present as an improved coaster comparable in size to other types of coasters that are being used at the present time but with the added advantage of giving the said drinkers a choice , either to use just one coaster to stand a glass etc on or use two coasters to form a convenient reusable wraparound holder if drinking from a bottle or can.
Therefore the present invention will fill a need in the market place and will be available right where it is needed on the tables and bar tops of the above said hotels, clubs and bars etc. In one form of the invention:
The coaster would be made from absorbent and insulative coaster type cardboard.
Ribs or grooves would be pressed or rolled into the underside face of the coaster to make bending of the coaster easier.
The means of attaching another identical coaster would be by pressure sensitive adhesive protected until needed by a removable peel off strip of suitable material, the said adhesive being at one end of the upperside face of the coaster.
A plurality of movable flaps would be in position on the upperside face of the coaster near the bottom edge. The said flaps having four sides would be cut through the coaster material on three sides, the fourth side remaining attached to the coaster material.
Both the upperside and underside faces of the coaster would have a suitable surface on which to print advertisements or company logos etc.
In another form of the invention
The coaster could be made from any suitable absorbent and insulative material.
Ribs or grooves may or may not be pressed or rolled into the underside face of the coaster.
The movable flaps may be partially cut through the coaster material by way of perforated outlines.
The movable flaps may be in the form of one single flap in the shape of a half circle, with the straight edge still attached to the coaster material and the arc edge cut through the coaster material. The means of attaching another identical coaster could be any suitable joining method.
To assist with understanding the invention , reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show one example of the invention.
In the drawings:
FIG 1 illustrates how the movable flaps 1 can be bent inwards. The grooves 2 that make bending of the coaster easier are also shown.
FIG 2 shows how two identical examples of the coaster can be joined together by overlapping 3 and then gluing together One of the adhesive cover strips 4 is shown peeled back exposing the pressure sensitive adhesive 5. An overlap position line 6 is also shown.
FIG 3 shows how two joined coasters can be used as a wraparound drink holder 7.The remaining adhesive cover strip 4 is shown partially peeled off.
FIG A shows the drink holder 7 wrapped around a bottle, overlapped and glued position after removal of the remaining adhesive cover strip. The movable flaps 1 can be seen bent inwards so as to stop the bottle from sliding out of the bottom of the drink holder.
FIG 5 shows how an empty bottle (or can) may be lifted out of the drink holder 7 so that a replacement full one may then be inserted.

Claims

The claims defining the invention are as follows:
1. A dual purpose coaster made of cardboard , being flat and generally of oblong shape, having an underside face and an opposite upperside face upon which movable flaps are positioned and also a means for attaching another identical coaster so as to form a wraparound holder for a bottle or can of cold beverage supported underneath by said movable flaps.
2. The dual purpose coaster of claim 1 wherein the coaster is made from synthetic material.
3. The dual purpose coaster of claim 1 wherein the said means of attaching another identical coaster is an adhesive substance at one end of the upperside face of the coaster.
4. The dual purpose coaster of claim 3 wherein the said adhesive substance is protected until needed by a removable cover strip of suitable material.
5. The dual purpose coaster of claim 1 wherein the said movable flaps are a plurality of flaps each one having four sides.
