Description

A RECEPTACLE AND SUPPORT BASE
This invention relates to a receptacle and support base. Many children accidentally knock over a receptacle such for example as a mug or glass when learning to drink. The contents of the receptacle then usually spill over a table or a floor. Also, many people use a drinking or food receptacle in a car, a train or in places other than at a table. The receptacle often falls over, and the contents of the receptacle are spilt. The present invention aims to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problems. According, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a receptacle and support base, the support base having a support base body including a receptacle engaging member and joining means to join the support base body to a surface, and the receptacle having a receptacle body including a support base engaging member for engaging with the receptacle engaging member in use, the shape of the receptacle engaging member and the support base engaging member allowing the receptacle to be lifted in a substantially vertical direction off the support base, but preventing the receptacle from falling off the support base with a horizontal force applied to the receptacle. Preferably, the joining means is a sucker or an adhesive to adhere the base to a surface. Other types of joining means may be employed if desired. When the joining means is a sucker, then the sucker may include a release mechanism. In one embodiment of the invention, the receptacle engaging member includes a projection which is received in a recess in the base of the receptacle forming a support base engaging member. The projection may be generally "M-shaped" in cross section, and it may be received in a recess which is generally "W-shaped" in cross section. Alternatively, the projection may be an elongate finger which is received in an elongate recess. The elongate finger may be generally cone-shaped, and it may have a cross shape in cross section. In another embodiment of the invention, the receptacle engaging member includes a recess which receives the base of the receptacle, the base forming a support base engaging member. The receptacle engaging member may be a cone-shaped recess which receives a conical-shaped receptacle base, the conical-shaped receptacle base forming the support base engaging member. Alternatively, the receptacle engaging member may be a cup having walls formed from upstanding fingers to receive a cylindrical-shaped receptacle base forming the support base engaging member. The support base may be made of a deformable material such for example as a flexible plastics material or a synthetic or natural rubber material. Preferably, the receptacle is a drinking receptacle. The receptacle may however be a food receptacle. Generally, the receptacle may be a receptacle for any desired and appropriate product, including liquid products, solid products, and semi-solid products. The receptacle and support base may be disposable or it may be reusable. Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1A, 1B and 1C show side, cross section and partial plan views of a first receptacle and support base of the invention; Figures 2A, 2B and 2C show side, cross section and partial plan views of a second receptacle and support base of the invention; Figures 3A, 3B and 3C show side, cross section and partial plan views of a third receptacle and support base of the invention; and Figures 4A, 4B and 4C show side, cross section and partial plan views of a fourth receptacle and support base of the invention. Referring to Figures 1A, 1B and 1C, there is shown a receptacle and support base 1. The support base has a support base body 2 having a receptacle engaging member in the form of a conical projection 2A which is generally "M-shaped" in cross section. A flexible flange 2B is integrally formed with and extends from the bottom of the projection 2A to create a joining means in the form of a sucker to adhere the support base body 2 to a surface (not shown). A release mechanism in the form of one or more tabs 3 is provided on the flange 2B to release the sucker from the surface when required. The support base may be made of a deformable material such for example as a flexible plastics material or a synthetic or natural rubber material. The receptacle has a receptacle body 4 including, at a bottom end, a support base engaging member in the form of a generally conical recess 4A. The generally conical recess 4A is "W-shaped" in cross section to engage with the "M-shaped" conical projection 2A. The receptacle is in the form of a drinking receptacle such as a drinking cup or a glass. The receptacle may be opaque or clear. The receptacle may be disposable or re-usable. In use, the shape of the receptacle engaging member 2A and the support base engaging member 4A allows the receptacle to be lifted in a substantially vertical direction off the support base, but prevents the receptacle from falling off the support base with a horizontal force applied to the receptacle. In this respect, it will be noted from Figure 1B that the diametrical distance "X" across the opening of the recess 4A is less than the distance "Y" between one side of the opening of the recess and an opposing tip of the "M-shaped" projection 2A. This prevents a horizontal force from causing the receptacle to fall off the support base. Other geometrical shapes of the receptacle engaging member and the support base engaging member may also be used. Referring to Figures 2A, 2B and 2C, there is shown a receptacle and support base 10. The support base has a support base body 12 having a receptacle engaging member in the form of a generally conical elongate finger 12A which is "cross-shaped" in cross section. A joining means in the form of a flexible sucker 12B is integrally formed with and extends from the bottom of the finger 12A to adhere the support base body 12 to a surface (not shown). A release mechanism in the form of one or more tabs 13 is provided on the sucker 12B to release the sucker 12B from the surface when required. The support base may be formed of a deformable material such for example as a flexible plastics material or a synthetic or natural rubber material. The "cross shape" of the finger 12A gives the finger 12A some rigidity. The receptacle has a receptacle body 14 including, at a bottom end, a support base engaging member including an elongate generally conical recess 14A. The recess 14A engages with the finger 12A as shown in Figure 2B. The receptacle body 14 is in the form of a drinking receptacle such as a drinking cup or a glass. The receptacle may be opaque or clear. The receptacle may be disposable or re-usable. In use, the shape of the receptacle engaging member 12A and the support base engaging member allows the receptacle to be lifted in a substantially vertical direction off the support base, but prevents the receptacle from falling off the support base with a horizontal force applied to the receptacle. Referring to Figures 3A, 3B and 3C, there is shown a receptacle and support base 20. The support base has a conical support base body 22 having a receptacle engaging member in the form of a generally conical recess 22A. A joining means in the form of flexible sucker 22B is integrally formed with and extends from the bottom of the conical body 22 to adhere the support base body 22 to a surface (not shown). A release mechanism in the form of one or more tabs 23 is provided on the sucker 22B to release the sucker 22B from the surface when required. The support base may be formed of a deformable material such for example as a flexible plastics material or a synthetic or natural rubber material. The receptacle has a receptacle body 24 including, at a bottom end, a support base engaging member in the form of a generally conical projection 24A to engage with the conical recess 22A. The receptacle body 24 is in the form of a drinking receptacle such as a drinking cup or a glass. The receptacle may be opaque or clear. The receptacle may be disposable or re-usable. In use, the shape of the receptacle engaging member 22A and the support base engaging member 24A allows the receptacle to be lifted in a substantially vertical direction off the support base, but prevents the receptacle from falling off the support base with a horizontal force applied to the receptacle. In this respect, it will be noted from Figure 3B that the diametrical distance "X" across the opening of the recess is less than the distance "Y" between one side of the opening of the recess and the bottom of the projection 24A. This prevents a horizontal force from causing the receptacle to fall off the support base. Other geometrical shapes of the receptacle engaging member and the support base engaging member may also be used. Referring to Figures 4A, 4B and 4C, there is shown a receptacle and support base 30. The support base has a support base body 32 having a receptacle engaging member in the form of a cup 32A having walls formed from upstanding fingers 32B. A joining means in the form of a flexible sucker 32C is integrally formed with and extends from the bottom of the cup 32A to adhere the support base body 32 to a surface (not shown). A release mechanism in the form of one or more tabs 33 is provided on the sucker 32C to release the sucker 32C from the surface when required. The support base may be formed of a deformable material such for example as a flexible plastics material or a synthetic or natural rubber material. The receptacle has a receptacle body 34 with a base forming a generally cylindrical projection 34A which engages with the cup 32A. The receptacle body 34 is in the form of a drinking receptacle such as a handled mug. The receptacle may be opaque or clear. The receptacle may be disposable or re-usable. The handle of the mug slots in between the fingers 32B. In use, the shape of the receptacle engaging member 32A and the support base engaging member 34A allows the receptacle to be lifted in a substantially vertical direction off the support base, but prevents the receptacle from falling off the support base with a horizontal force applied to the receptacle. It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the receptacle and support base may be sold as a stand alone item, or in conjunction with a tray or mat to receive the or each support base joining means. In this respect, the invention also extends to the above defined receptacle and support base in combination with a tray or mat to receive the or each support base joining means. Instead of a sucker, the joining means may be an adhesive, for example a self-adhesive, optionally covered with a removable protective sheet prior to use. Alternatively, the joining means may be Velcro (Registered Trade Mark). The support base may be integrally formed with a tray, mat, table or other object. A venting mechanism may be provided to prevent the formation of a vacuum between the receptacle and support base when the two are separated. The receptacle and support base of the invention, together with any tray, mat, table or other object, may include printed information thereon, for example, advertising messages, pictures or patterns. The receptacle and support base of the invention may be produced from plastics materials. The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the receptacle may be a bowl, plate or other container. The receptacle and support base may be designed for use by both adults and children.
