Description

FEEDING DISH TO PREVENT PEST INFESTATION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to a feeding dish for pets. More particularly, the present invention relates to a feeding dish wherein the food dish is surrounded by the water dish to prevent ants and other crawling insects from infesting the contained food.
Related Art A common problem often occurs when feeding a pet with most conventional feeding dishes in that crawling insects may infest or otherwise compromise the pet's food. The prior art has attempted to solve this problem in various ways. US Patent 5,775,255 discloses a container split into food and water sections, which are collectively encircled by a moat. In this case the moat is filled with common household detergents that are harmful to insects. Although the moat is partially covered to prevent the pet from drinking the harmful substance, a pet may still have access to the unsafe detergent. In other words, the moat is not intended to function as a source of drinking water for the pet. US patent 6,167,840 discloses a pet dish in which a water bowl functions as a support base. The food dish extends up from the base on a pedestal and is protected by a small insect poison moat located just beneath the feeding dish. In addition to being bulky and cumbersome, the combined weight of the water and the water dish serves as a counterweight for the pedestal and food dish. Accordingly when the water dish is empty the food dish may readily tip and spill the both contents of the food dish and moat. US Patents 5,560,315, and 5,743,210 depict a configuration in which the surrounding liquid barrier to the food actually functions as the water dish. Ants are not able to cross the water section into the food and there is no poison associated with these systems that could be harmful to pets. A lid may be placed over the entire system to enable easy transport, but in doing this, the food and water are not significantly separated. Minor bumps or slight overfilling of the water section could cause the food be spoiled by the water. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It has been recognized that it would be advantageous to develop a feeding dish for pets that can prevent insect infestation in the food and prevent the contents of the water dish from mixing with the food dish. The present invention provides a feeding system comprising a combination food and water dish. The food dish is secured inside the water dish such that when the water dish is filled, the food dish is completely surrounded by water. This water barrier prevents crawling insects from crossing into the food dish. Also, the food dish is elevated with respect to the water dish as to prevent a breech of water into the food. In accordance with a more detailed aspect of the present invention, the system may include a molding inside the water dish where the food dish may be placed, thereby making the food dish removable for cleaning or for storing of perishable foods in other locations. Additional features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description which follows, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, which together illustrate, by way of example, features of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a top view of the feeding dish in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention; FIG. 2 is a side view of the feeding dish in FIG. 1 ; and FIG. 3 is a representation of an alternate embodiment of this invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Reference will now be made to the exemplary embodiments illustrated in the drawings, and specific language will be used herein to describe the same. It will nevertheless be understood that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended. Alterations and further modifications of the inventive features illustrated herein, and additional applications of the principles of the inventions as illustrated herein, which would occur to one skilled in the relevant art and having possession of this disclosure, are to be considered within the scope of the invention. As illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2, and 3 a feeding dish 10 is provided. An outside dish comprises the water dish 11 and is defined by a perimeter sidewall 12. The sidewall 12 may be shaped in any manner that provides a sufficient drinking medium for the pet. The sidewall 12 dimensions determine the volume of water contained in the dish and can vary based on the needs of the pet. A base 13 for the water dish is attached to the sidewall 12 around the entire perimeter. The base' 13 provides stability to the entire feeding dish while maintaining the functionality of the dish. An inside dish comprises the food dish 14 and is also defined by a perimeter sidewall 15. This sidewall 15 may be any shape and is shown with a round shape for the present embodiment. The dimensions of this sidewall will determine the quantity of food the dish is able to hold and can be set with any values based on the needs of the pet. The food dish 14 is secured inside of the water dish 11 such that when the water portion is filled 17, water surrounds the entire food dish. Crawling insects are thereby prevented from accessing the food dish 11 due to their inability to cross the water barrier 17. The top edge of the food dish 18 is elevated by an arbitrary height 16 with respect to the top edge of the water dish 19. This elevation can be achieved by either increasing the height of the food dish sidewall 15, or by securing the food dish 14 in a higher position within the water dish 11. The elevation height 16 is to be placed high enough to prevent mixing of water and food that results from minor movements of the feeding dish 10 or overfilling of the water dish 11. An alternate embodiment of the feeding dish 10 is illustrated in FIG. 3. In this embodiment similar food 31 and water 32 dishes are conceived. The main difference is seen in a molding 33 to contain the food dish. The molding 33 is secured within the water dish in the same manner as the food dish disclosed in the previous embodiment. The food dish 31 is removably disposed 34 with respect to the molding 33. The removal of the food dish allows an easy means for cleaning or for storing perishable foods in other locations. The molding 33 is elevated with an arbitrary height 35 with respect to the water dish 32 to prevent a breech of water into the food. It is to be understood that the above-referenced arrangements are only illustrative of the application for the principles of the present invention. Numerous modifications and alternative arrangements can be devised without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. While the present invention has been shown in the drawings and fully described above with particularity and detail in connection with what is presently deemed to be the most practical and preferred embodiment(s) of the invention, it will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art that numerous modifications can be made without departing from the principles and concepts of the invention as set forth herein.
