Abstract

The present invention overcomes the limitations of the prior art by providing novel peptidoglycan-hydrolases. In one aspect of the invention the peptidoglycan-hydrolyzing enzyme is gp61 (an N-acetylmuramidase) encoded by ORF61 of bacteriophage N4. The invention provides methods and compositions comprising use of gp6l, as well as homologs thereof. The invention will find use, for example, in the treatment of bacterial infections.
