  • the housing is preferably sealed, however, it need not be biologically inert.
  • the housing 3 contains a plurality of sensors 4, two in the embodiment of FIG. 1.
  • the two sensors 4 are configured for sensing the temperature and electrocardiogram (ECG) patterns of the animal. It will be appreciated, however, that any preferred number of sensors 4 for detecting any preferred physical properties such as biometric impedance and body fat, hormone levels, heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, or oxygenation, or any other physical property of interest can be sensed.
  • the implant device housing 3 further contains an implant monitoring device controller 5 in communication with the sensors 4 for receiving sensor signals indicative of the sensed properties, temperature and ECG pattern in the embodiment of FIG. 1.
  • An implant device transmitter 6 is in communication with the implant monitoring device controller 5 and configured for transmitting or broadcasting monitoring device transmitter signals indicative of the sensed physical properties as provided by the sensors 4 via the implant controller 5.
  • the implant monitoring device 2 further includes a power source 7 in communication with the sensors 4, transmitter 6 and implant controller 5 for providing power thereto.
  • the battery is contained within the inert momtoring device housing 3.
  • the monitoring device transmitter 6 is an RF transmitter configured to communicate to the pervasive communications apparatus 8 or a device (not shown).
  • the power source shown in FIG. 1 is a battery 7 and although not illustrated, battery 7 is in communication with an RF induction energy receiving device configured for receiving RF energy from the base station or other RF signal source for inductively charging the battery 7.
  • battery 7 can be a sealed non-rechargeable battery or a rechargeable battery in communication with a power source derived from kinetic energy provided by the animal.
  • the battery can simply be a standard non-rechargeable dry cell battery.
  • the system 1 further includes a plurality of pervasive communications apparatus 8 and 10 disposed remotely from the implant device 2. It is noted that either the pervasive communications apparatus 8 communicates to a remote application database 9 by way of RF, WiFi, GSM, 3G CDMA or satellite.
  • the pervasive communications apparatus 8 and 10 are configured to receive signals from the implant device transmitter 6, these signals being indicative of the physical property sensed by sensors 4.
  • any number of pervasive devices such as a PDA, mobile phone, laptop computer or desktop computer, can be in communication with the application database 9 for receiving information indicative of the one or more sensed properties via satellite, terrestrial or other base stations or repeater stations (not illustrated).
  • the pervasive communications apparatus are configured to display and store the transmitted information, inclusive of any recent historical or previously received data from the monitoring device 2. It is noted that each of the pervasive communications apparatus 8 or 10 are capable of communicating the received information indicative of the sensed properties to an application database 9.
  • the pervasive communications apparatus 8 and 10 can communicate with the application database 9 by any preferred communication means such as GSM or 3G modem connection, direct dial mobile telephone connection, line of sight microwave transmission, blue tooth TM protocol transmission, or line of sight IR communication.

  • the information indicative of the sensed predetermined properties can then be viewed, stored, manipulated, transmitted, or otherwise used as is preferred.
  • the monitoring device 2 whether implantable or wearable, can be configured to sense the one or more predetermined physical properties of the animal at predetermined and periodical intervals such as every 30 minutes or other interval which will allow appropriate review of the predetermined physical properties by a user or users of the pervasive communications apparatus or other users of the convention computing apparatus that has received that data.
  • the user or users of the system can then promptly take action in response to sensed predetermined physical properties that fall outside a predetermined range, for example, an elevated heart rate, temperature, oxygenation or blood sugar level.
  • the system 1 can also be configured such that the monitoring device 2 continually senses the predetermined physical properties and transmits a signal indicative of these properties via the transmitter 6 once the properties fall outside a predetermined range or value, thus acting as an alarm or alert.
  • the pervasive communications apparatus 8 and 10 or the application database 9 can be configured to communicate with the monitoring device 2 (via the pervasive communications apparatus 8 and 10 for the conventional computing apparatus) to transmit a program signal to an RF receiver integrated into the RF transmitter 6 disposed within the monitoring device 2.
  • the monitoring device controller 5 can be reconfigured to sense other predetermined physical properties, correct for any measurement errors in the operation of the sensors 4 such as calibrations or provide output in a predetermined fo ⁇ n or at differing time intervals or in response to different preferred predetermined ranges of sensed signals before activating alarm conditions.
  • system 1 in use also provides the location of an animal wearing the pervasive communications device 8.
  • the implant device transmitter 6 also includes an RF receiver that is configured to receive program signals from a pervasive communications apparatus 8 or 10, the system 1 can be configured to allow interrogation by the pervasive communications apparatus of the momtoring device 2 to cause the monitoring device transmitter 6 to transmit information indicative of the 1 or more predetermined physical properties sensed by the senses 4 outside the periodic measurement intervals or when the sensed properties to not fall outside a predetermined range.
  • the system 1 can be configured to allow interrogation by the pervasive communications apparatus of the momtoring device 2 to cause the monitoring device transmitter 6 to transmit information indicative of the 1 or more predetermined physical properties sensed by the senses 4 outside the periodic measurement intervals or when the sensed properties to not fall outside a predetermined range.
  • Such a feature can be used amongst other things to provide a system 1 test mechanism.
  • an external RF repeating device or repeater collar 20 can be disposed on the neck or other part of the animal to receive the signals transmitted by the monitoring device transmitter 6 to be re-broadcast to the application database 9 directly or via conventional RF or mobile telephone base stations thereto.
  • the collar 20 comprises an RF Transceiver 21, a battery (or batteries) 22, an implant reader in the form of microprocessor 23, a removable GPS receiver 24, a visible alert unit in the form of LEDs 25 and a fastener 26 for securing the collar to the animal.
  • system 1 has been described with reference to human and farmed animals, it can equally and easily be configured for use in any other preferred animals such as bovine or canines. Modifications, obvious to those skilled in the art, can be made to the system 1 to allow it to be used for other types of animals, for example, having different transceiver transmission powers or battery sizes including sensors which are specifically configured for measuring a predetermined physical property of the particular animal, to implant part of the monitoring device 2 subcutaneously in an animal and another part (such as the battery and transmitter) wearably on a collar or the like on the animal.
  • a plurality of monitoring devices 2 can be used to communicate signals of the sensed physical property(s) to one or more pervasive mobile telephone devices. Likewise, two or more monitoring devices 2 can be used to measure the same or different physical properties of one animal.

Abstract

La présente invention concerne un système à distance (1) permettant de surveiller l'état de santé et la position d'un anima, lequel système comprend un dispositif de surveillance (2) portable ou implantable. Le dispositif de surveillance comprend un boîtier (3). Le boîtier comprend plusieurs capteurs (4) conçus pour échantillonner un ou plusieurs états de santé prédéterminés de l'animal. Le boîtier contient également un dispositif de commande (5) du dispositif de surveillance, qui communique avec les capteurs afin de recevoir les signaux indiquant les états de santé. Un émetteur (6) du dispositif de surveillance communique avec le dispositif de commande et il est conçu pour transmettre ou pour diffuser des signaux d'émission au fur et à mesure qu'ils sont détectés par les capteurs.
