Description

USED CHEWING GUM RECEPTACLE
This invention relates to a used chewing gum receptacle which has the facility for carrying and dispensing fresh chewing gum and which can also act as a receptacle for used chewing gum.
At the present time there is a problem concerning chewing gum removal from streets and pavements and other floor surfaces in public places and the cost to Authorities is high. The present invention is intended to provide an alternative to these costs by the use of a device which will allow the chewing gum user to conveniently dispose of the used chewing gum rather than casting it away onto, for example, the pavement.
According to the present invention a used chewing gum receptacle comprises two or more compartments, the first of which is dimensioned and adapted to receive fresh loose chewing gum or a packet of fresh chewing gum through a first closable opening and the second of which has a second closable opening through which used chewing gum can be deposited into the second compartment characterised in that said receptacle is in the form of a rigid unitary container which includes said two compartments which are divided by an integral mutual dividing wall and each of which has a rigid movable lid.
The small container provided by the invention can conveniently be carried in the user's pocket or handbag and when the packet of fresh chewing gum is exhausted and the used contents placed into the container the container can be disposed of. Even if it is thrown away in the street it can be easily swept up and the chewing gum will not be spread onto the pavement surface. Alternatively the container can be made from a material which allows the used chewing gum to be emptied out of the second compartment so that the receptacle can be used again. In a preferred embodiment the two compartments are substantially parallel and rectangular.
The first closable opening can be at one end of the first compartment and the second closable opening is at or adjacent to the end of the second compartment adjacent to the end of the first compartment in which the first closable opening is provided.
With this construction the rigid movable lid of the first compartment is hinged to the container substantially in line with the mutual dividing wall.
In another arrangement the operable closure can extend from the said one end and into a side wall of the second compartment.
If desired the first closable opening extends from said one end and into a side wall of the first compartment.
The rigid lid of the compartment and/or the first compartment is in the form of a pivoted flap which has sides which extend into or over the adjacent walls of the second or first compartment when in the closed position.
In an alternative construction the integral dividing wall can be provided as a bottom wall for each compartment and the moveable lids are arranged to form opposed end walls spaced away from the said mutual dividing wall.
Thus the integral mutual dividing wall can be provided as a bottom wall for each compartment and the movable lid for one compartment is arranged to form an opposed end wall of said compartment spaced away from the mutual dividing wall and the lid for the other compartment is arranged in a side wall. In a convenient construction the lids can be provided as plugs which can be pressed into and pulled out of the respective compartments.
Where a lid is arranged in a side wall it can be in the form of a pivoted flap which has sides which extend into or over the adjacent walls of the compartment when in the closed position.
In another construction the movable lids of both compartments can be arranged to form opposed side walls of their compartments spaced away from the mutual dividing wall and both being arranged as in their respective side walls in the form of pivoted flaps which have sides which extend into or over the adjacent walls of their respective compartments when in the closed position.
The receptacle can be made from any convenient material, for example cardboard, or a synthetic plastics material.
The invention can be performed in various ways and two embodiments will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying in which :
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a used chewing gum receptacle according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the construction shown in Figure 1; and,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of an alternative construction.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of another construction; and
Figure 5 is a side elevation of yet another alternative construction. As shown in Figures 1 and 2 a used chewing gum receptacle according to the present invention comprises a substantially rigid container 1 which can be made from, for example, cardboard or a synthetic plastics material. The receptacle is divided into a first compartment 2 and a second compartment 3. The first compartment 2 is dimensioned to receive fresh loose chewing gum or a packet of fresh chewing gum indicated by chain lines 4. The upper end of the compartment 2 is provided at one end with an opening 5 which, in the construction shown, is closed by an operable closure 6 which, in the construction shown, is hinged at 7 to allow it to be opened. In order to assist operation the closure or lid 6 is provided with a protruding lip 8.
In order to load the first compartment 2 the operable closure or lid 6 is flipped open about its hinge by using the lip 8, the packet of fresh chewing gum 5 is inserted and the lid closed. Any convenient means of retaining the closure 6 in the closed position can be employed, for example, by providing a plug (not shown) on the bottom of the closure which is a push fit into the interior of the compartment 2.
The second compartment 3 is also rectangular in side view and parallel with the first compartment 2. The two compartments are separated by an integral mutual dividing wall 10.
The compartments can be closed by a lid similar to the lid 6 but in the drawing this compartment 3 is provided with a pivoted flap 11 which has sides 12 (as most clearly shown in Figure 2). The flap 11 is pivoted at 13 to the lower end 14 of the compartment 3. In Figure 1 the flap 11, which acts as an operable closure, is in its open position so that used chewing gum can be deposited into the second compartment 3 through the open upper end 15 of the flap in the direction of the arrow 16. With the used chewing gum now within the compartment 3 the flap 15 can be pushed closed to the position shown in chain lines 17 in Figure 1. The receptacle 1 can be formed in one moulding from a synthetic plastics material, the hinges 13 and 7 relying upon the resiliency of the material itself, or it could be made up from a cardboard blank.
The receptacle is therefore cheap to manufacture and can be disposable. For example, when the compartment 3 is full of used chewing gum the whole receptacle can be thrown away. Depending upon the size of the second chambers 3 more than one packet 4 of chewing gum can be used.
Alternatively, if it is desired to use the receptacle for more than one packet of chewing gum, it is possible for the used gum to be disposed of by opening the flap 11 and scraping or knocking it out.
In the construction shown the flap 11 is located within the chamber 3 when closed but it could be formed so that its side walls were outside the sides of the compartment 3 when in the closed position.
The construction could be such that the receptacles could be sold separately to a purchaser for use with packets of chewing gum or the chewing gum manufacturer could supply the chewing gum in a package which incorporated the receptacle. In this latter construction the chewing gum could be contained in the first compartment 1 with suitable sealing of the contents or of the whole receptacle.
Figure 3 shows another construction according to the invention in which the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts to those shown in Figures
I and 2. In this construction however a pivoted flap 18 is provided for the first chamber 2 in place of the operable closure 6 and an upper end wall 19 extends across the upper end of the receptacle. The flap 18 works in a similar way to the flap
II on compartment 3. ln the construction shown in Figure 4 the used chewing gum receptacle is preferably made from a synthetic plastics material and again comprises a substantially rigid container 20 which is divided into a first compartment 21 and a second compartment 22. The two compartments have an integral mutual dividing wall 23 and an opening 24 in the first compartment 21 is provided in the opposed end wall spaced away from the wall 23. The second compartment 22 has a similar opening 25 which is spaced away from the wall 23 and this can be closed by an operable closure 26 which is in the form of a hollow plug, the inner walls of which can engage and grip a flange 27 around the opening 25.
The opening 24 in the first compartment 21 is closed by an stop 28 which has a plug 29 which can engage within the opening 24.
With this arrangement the packet, or loose pieces of chewing gum, can be located in the first compartment 21 and used chewing gum in the second compartment 22. In order to easily identify the compartments the closure members 26 and 28 can be of different shapes and/or different colours.
This used chewing gum receptacle can be employed in a similar way to the construction shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 and the same considerations apply with regard to packaging.
Figure 5 shows another alternative construction which is of similar general configuration as that shown in Figure 4 and the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts. In this construction however flaps 30 and 31 are provided in the side walls for compartments 21 and 22 respectively and replace the operable closures 26 and 28 the end walls of the compartments 21 and 22, indicated by reference numerals 33 and 34 respectively, being solid with the remainder of the construction. If desired the constructions shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5 can be combined so that one of the compartments uses a flap closure, as shown in Figure 5, and the other compartment uses a plug, as shown in Figure 4.
The compartments can be arranged in any configuration and the overall shape of the receptacle can be circular, cylindrical, polygonal or any other shape, as desired.
Similarly, three or more compartments could be included, at least one of which provides a compartment to receive the used chewing gum.
It will be appreciated that even if a receptacle of the kind set forth is thrown away, when it becomes full of used chewing gum, it can safely be deposited in refuse baskets and containers without causing anything to stick together and if left on the pavement will not cause the same problems as unwrapped chewing gum.
