Definitions
- the present invention relates to an automatic steering lock device. It serves to lock the steering shaft and can be installed on cars, motorcars, boats and, in general, on any shaft that allows the change of gear direction of any type of vehicle. Their use is quite various.
- a variety of locking devices that use a pin member sliding inside a cavity have been proposed to date. They usually comprise a cylindrical-shaped case, inside which a pin member slides engaged to a cylindrical member lodged into the case, that contains the lock.
- the sliding pin member is provided with at least a couple of little spheres which coming out from the side surface, fit into the groove of the case, to lock or unlock the pin to activate or deactivate the device.
- the main drawback of the known applications is the unreliability of the spheres mechanism due to the abrupt stops of the spheres that compromise the functioning.
- the invention solves the technical problems mentioned because it is an automatic steering lock to be used to lock the steering shaft and to be applied to the steering of cars, motorcycles, bicycles, boats and, in general, to any shaft that allows the change of gear of any type of vehicle. It comprises locking means directly connected to the lock and anti-breaking means to protect the lock; and is characterized by the fact that said lock comprises a rotor whose end transmits motion to a member that provides the device's lock and unlock positions.
- the rotor is concentric with the stator and transforms the 90° rotary motion of a device named "drawer" (for it can be pulled out and pushed in) into linear one. Said 'drawer' is made of two pieces to allow its assembly.
- said locking devices connected to said lock comprise an eccentric disk operated by the lock rotor.
- Fig. 1 shows the exploded view of the steering lock according to the invention
- ⁇ Fig. 2 shows the assembling drawing of the lock in locking position
- Fig. 3 shows the assembling drawing of the lock sliding inside the cylindrical-shaped case
- Fig. 6 shows a first step of the assembling process of the locking device
- Fig. 7 shows the Aluminium flash
- Fig. 8 shows the bush for fixing the shaft of the steering column
- Fig. 9 shows a second step of the assembling process of the locking device
- Fig. 10 shows a third step of the assembling process of the locking device
- Fig. 11 shows the exploded view of the shaft fixing bush of Fig. 8.
- the invention comprises a case (15) inside which an armoured housing (1) slides; said housing accommodates the lock (3) and a pawl (2) being the device activated, rotates protecting the lock from any attempt of breaking.
- a member named 'drawer' (6) made of two pieces - the 'drawer' itself (6') and a 'counter-drawer' (6") - to ease the device assembly, and an elastic shaped member (5).
- Said lock rotor (3) is concentric with the fixed portion of the device, allowing the reduction of the radial dimensions of the entire device. Said rotor transforms its 90° rotary motion into a linear motion of the drawer (6).
- the drawer (6) being in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, engages with the case (15) in locking and unlocking positions; while being in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, it allows the armoured housing/lock set to slide from the locking position to the unlocking one, and vice versa.
- the elastic member (5) for example an Archimedean spiral spring, ensures the correct transversal positioning of the 'drawer' inside the case (15).
- Fig. 5 a further embodiment of the invention is shown.
- the eccentric disc (56) is rotated by the lock core engaged to said eccentric disc and is connected to the case (15) in (15') and (15"), in unlocking and locking positions.
- the elastic member (55) ensures the correct transversal position of the disc inside the case (15).
- the locking member of the device is lodged inside the armoured housing (1), between the 'drawer' or the eccentric disc and the seat of an elastic retaining member (10).
- the practical embodiments of the pin and the stem and the spring arrangement can be different.
- the pin can be solid and the stem hollow, as in Fig. 4, or, the pin can be hollow and the stem solid.
- Said armoured housing (1) is equipped with two safety half- bushings (12), a permanent magnet (14) and an elastic return element (11) acting between the case (15) and the pin (8) of the mushroom-shaped pin, which keeps the armoured housing /lock set tensioned. Thanks to its limited dimensions the case (15) does not need further machining to be suitable for the dimensions of the steering column.
- the case is welded on the external seat of the previously drilled steering assembly, before fitting up the armoured housing /lock assembly. If not provided, the steering internal shaft is to be provided with a slotted bushing inside which the stem (9) works once the device is activated.
- a miniature magnetic switch (not shown) is lodged into a seat of the case (15), being connected to an electronic interface allows the engine to start being the device deactivated.
- the electronic interface is equipped with acoustic signalling device to signal the activation (for example, continuous signalling) or the deactivation (for example, discontinuous signalling) of the device when one of the car doors is open.
- the electronic interface can provide any other sophisticated function upon request.
- the assembling of the 'drawer' comprises two pieces: the 'drawer' itself (6') being radial-mounted inside the armoured housing and a 'counter-drawer' (6") axial-mounted, being joined by means of a dovetail; once joined the two parts assume a special shape that allows the rotor end (3) to move the two pieces as a 'drawer'.
- the external end of the radial-mounted piece (6') can fit into the grooves of external case.
- Said steering lock device in the embodiment used for the SMART car and other vehicle having the same steering column, has been studied to be provided as kit, since the assembling on the vehicle has been extremely simplified. The following are different steps for assembling the kit: 1. remove the steering column upper and lover covers and the right and left turn indicators; 2. remove the Aluminium flask (21) as in Fig. 6. 3. remove thread M8 (22) and produce a hole with a 09 drill point as in Fig. 7.
