Abstract

The present invention refers to impact noise insulation paving materials. Particularly it refers to a paving material able to absorb vibrations produced by both sound and impacts on the surface of a floor. It relies in a novel layered structure involving resilient materials, each layer with its own function in achieving the final product insulation characteristics.

Description

DESCRIPTION
FLOORING HAVING IMPACT SOUND INSULATION CHARACTERISTICS AND MANUFACTURE PROCESS THEREOF
The present invention refers to paving materials that:
1. due to the acoustical characteristics thereof absorb sound energy produced by walking - step sound.
2. due to the acoustical characteristics thereof insulate the impact sound.
Background of the Invention
The acoustical impact sound insulation characteristics of a flooring material (the reduction of noise levels caused by impacts and, most particularly, of those due to walking on the flooring surface) have an increasing influence in the consumer selection of flooring material.
The increasing importance of this insulation aspect is confirmed taking into account the innovations in flooring materials presented this year by the manufacturers.
In spite of this, there is still no certifying organism for the noise reduction assessment method of noise produced by walking.
US Patent US20030033779 discloses an insulation system using a comprised of a continuous sheet and that has lateral, top, bottom and edge surfaces. The disclosed system consists of two layers, a subfloor and an upper decorative layer. The substratum has rubber particles that impart stiffness to the system, and between t-hese particles there are empty spaces that act to improve the acoustical damping ability of the system.
International patent WO 03044295 discloses an impact sound transmission reduction system for use in building construction. The invention basically consists of two distinct layers. The tapper layer, which is overlaid with an adequate finishing topping, includes a single, rigid, substratum comprising plasterboard, fibrocement, a xigid panel, pressed wood chips board or stabilized reconstructed wood. The lower layer, that will contact the cement, is made of a more elastic and resilient material suitable for impact noise reduction.
The abovementioned patents, although in the same field of the present invention, provide quite different solutions both in terms of the materials as well as in the assembly thereof.
Brief summary of the invention
The present invention refers to paving materials whose surface consists of a high wear resistance flexible topping.
According to the present invention the insulation shortcomings are overcome by gluing a decorative layer <e.g. wood, cork or any other decorative element having similar characteristics and about 0.6 mm thick) on a support base, herein named "SilentCork", which elements are the upper layer of each individual tile, plate or panel. Upper layer means the layer positioned immediately above (upper position) the wood fibres agglomerate.
The tests to the acoustical characteristics performed on the invention flooring have shown that it provides an impact sound insulation improvement of 18 dB (according to the ISO 140—8 standard) and a step sound reduction of about 8 dB (according to XP S 31-074, a CSTB (France) internal testing eth-od) .
Description of the Drawing
Figure 1 shows:
1 - Upper coating; layer consisting in a high wear resistance transparent coating that ensures the surface wear char-acteristics according to the intended use;
2 - Decorative layer; decorative layer consisting in a wood, cork: or any other type of sheet decorative material having similar .characteristics, imparting a decorative visual to the product;
3 - Decorative layer support base ("SilentCork") ; resilient composite base of cork and polymers capable of absorbing impact energy due to walking (step sound) , thus reducing impact sound transmission; 4 — Wood fibres agglomerate; the intermediate layer comprised of a rigid wood fibres agglomerate panel. It is the structuring element of the assembly, allowing the machining of a male/female profile and therefore the presentation of the product in the floating form.
5 — Balance sheet; a laminated product sheet or film intended to balance the stresses due to the upper coating and the decorative layer;
6 — Lower layer (Backing) ; layer of cork agglomerate or of any other material with similar characteristics that enhances the product its impact sound reduction ability and provides the necessary adaptation to irregular surfaced substratum.
Figure 2 shows the manufacturing process of the invention flooring schematically and the various stages thereof.

Claims

1 - Flooring having improved impact and step sound insulation characterized in that it comprises, from top to bottom, a wear layer (1) consisting in a high wear resistance coating; a cork veneer or natural wood layer or any other decorative layer with similar characteristics (2), a decorative layer support base ("SilentCork") (3) that acts as a resilient and acoustical insulation layer; an intermediate plate (4) of wood fibres agglomerate, that confers stiffness to the final product, thereby being considered as "floating"; a "balance" sheet (5) that is defined as a function of the properties of the "decorative" element chosen, intended to balance the product stresses; and, finally a lower layer (backing) made of cork agglomerate or of any other material with similar characteristics (6) that provides the product impact sound insulation improvement relative to other floating floorings types .
2 - Flooring according to the previous claim, characterized in that it provides an impact sound insulation improvement of 18 dB (according to the ISO 140-8 standard) and of about 8 dB in step sound.
3 - Manufacturing process of a flooring having impact and sound insulation characterized in that it comprises the following stages: (i) manufacturing of composition cork layers, namely the manufacturing of the decorative layer support base ("SilentCork") and of the lower layer (backing) ; (ii) selection of the decorative layer of the balance sheet (iii) gluing operations of the decorative layer to the support base ("SilentCork") and of the balance layer to the lower layer (backing) ; (iv) gluing operations of the two "sandwiches" to the wood fibres agglomerate; (v) applying of the upper transparent film or coating; (vi) cutting and edge sealing operation; (vii) standardizing and selection of the tiles; (viii) packing, labelling and storing of the finished product.
