Description

TOOL FOR GRINDING AND POLISHING OF GLASS AND SURFACES OF HARD AND BRITTLE NON-GLASS MATERIALS
The present invention concerns to a tool for grinding and polishing of glass, especially glass jewelry stones, and surfaces of hard and brittle non-glass materials.
For grinding and polishing of glass, especially jewelry stones, solid tools made of abrasive grains bound by a suitable bond and comprising in some cases a filling agent - filler lowering costs for the tool are used. The abrasive grains are formed for example by eerie oxide (Ce02) and the bond is for example organic phenol-formaldehyde or melamin- formaldehyde resins. As a filler for example perlite or ash is used. Disadvantage of use of tools made of the above mentioned components for glass grinding and polishing is relatively long time necessary to complete grinding and polishing of product, quality of the worked surface of product not fully corresponding to demands and also short life of the tool.
The above mentioned disadvantages are substantially reduced by a tool for grinding and polishing of glass and surfaces of hard and brittle non-glass materials according to the present invention, comprising abrasive which is for example eerie oxide, and bond, for example phenol-formaldehyde resin, substance of the tool consisting in that it further comprises as a filler hollow or full or porous polyamide and/or polyethylene and/or polypropylene and/or polymethacrylate and/or polystyrene and/or glass and/or corundum microbeads of size of 1 μm to 200 μm. According to preferred embodiment the tool comprises 100 parts by weight of eerie oxide of medium grain size of 30 μm as abrasive, 20 parts by weight of phenol-formaldehyde resin of novolac type as bond and 5 parts by weight of corundum microbeads of medium size of 20 μm.
According to another preferred embodiment the tool comprises 100 parts by weight of eerie oxide of medium grain size of 6 μm as abrasive, 20 parts by weight of phenol-formaldehyde resin of novolac type and 6 parts by weight of polyethylene microbeads of medium size of 55 μm.
Using the filler according to the present invention a substantially higher removal is achieved with the tool and thus time necessary to perform an operation of grinding or polishing is reduced while achieving a fully satisfying quality of the worked surface of product. Advantage is also an increased life of the grinding or polishing tool.
Example 1
Tool is made of a mixture comprising 100 parts by weight of eerie oxide of medium grain size of 30 μm as abrasive, 20 parts by weight of powder epoxy-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin of novolac type as bond and 5 parts by weight of corundum microbeads of medium size of 20 μm. The mixture is wetted with 4 parts by weight of distilled water, sifted through screen, compacted into form of a wheel and cured under temperature of 140°C to 180°C. The tool is to be used mainly for glass grinding. Example 2
Tool is made of a mixture comprising 100 parts by weight of eerie oxide of medium grain size of 6 μm as abrasive, 20 parts by weight of powder phenol-formaldehyde resin of novolac type and 6 parts by weight of polyethylene microbeads of medium size of 55 μm. The mixture is wetted with 4 parts by weight of distilled water, sifted through screen, compacted into form of a wheel and cured under temperature of 120 °C to 180 °C. The tool is to be used mainly for glass polishing.
Example 3
Tool is made of a mixture comprising 100 parts by weight of eerie oxide of medium grain size of 4 μm as abrasive, 20 parts by weight of powder epoxide resin of dian type with 2 % of hexamethylene tetramine and 4 parts by weight of polystyrene microbeads of medium size of 90 μm. The mixture is wetted with 4 parts by weight of distilled water, sifted through screen, compacted into form of a wheel and cured under temperature of 120°C to 180°C. The tool is to be used mainly for glass polishing.
Tool for grinding and polishing of glass can also be used for grinding and polishing of surface of hard and brittle non- glass materials.
