Description
MULTIPURPOSE MIRROR
Technical Field The present invention relates to a mirror, and more particularly, to a multipurpose mirror with an image display portion which allows a user to view a broadcast program or a movie while watching himself/herself in the mirror.
Background Art There are many mirrors installed in beauty salons or public baths so that clients can watch themselves in the mirrors. However, while a person is getting his/her hair done or lowering himself/herself in a public bathtub or taking a sauna, he or she would feel boring because he or she cannot do anything but sleep or chat with other people. To solve this problem, an image display such as a television (TV) set is installed in these facilities. However, in this case, installation costs and spaces for the image display increase the setting and operational costs of these places. Further, in a beauty shop, a client will feel uncomfortable since the client has to turn his or head to watch a mirror and the image display, and thus, it is inefficient to do the client's hair.
Disclosure of the Invention The present invention provides a multipurpose mirror with an image display, which enables a user to view a broadcast program or a movie while watching himself/herself in the mirror. According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a multipurpose mirror with a mirror panel, including an optical reflecting portion that reflects light incident on a front side thereof, and an image display portion on which still or moving characters or images are displayed. An image display device, which generates still or moving characters or images and projects the characters or images onto a front side of the image display portion, is preferably attached to a rear side of the mirror panel. The image display device preferably includes a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel.
An elastic cushion sheet is preferably interposed between front edges of the image display device and the rear side of the mirror panel. The multipurpose mirror preferably further comprises a portion that drives the image display device. The image display portion is preferably placed in an upper or lower portion of the mirror panel. The multipurpose mirror preferably further comprises a portion that outputs sound outside the mirror panel. The multipurpose mirror preferably further comprises a case that supports and fixes edges of the mirror panel and protects the mirror panel.
Brief Description of the Drawings FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective of a multipurpose mirror according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; FIG. 2 is a front view of the multipurpose mirror of FIG. 1 ; and FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the multipurpose mirror of FIG. 1.
Best mode for carrying out the Invention Hereinafter, a preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. The same reference numerals in different drawings indicate the same elements. Referring to FIGs. 1 through 3, a multipurpose mirror 10 according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention includes a mirror panel 20, and an image display device 40 disposed at a rear side of the mirror panel 20. The mirror panel 20 may be manufactured to include an optical reflecting portion 25 that reflects light incident upon its front side. The optical reflecting portion 25 is made by coating a rear side of a transparent panel 21 , such as a glass panel, with a light reflecting pigment 22. The light reflecting pigment 22 may be formed of a pigment, e.g., a mixture (solution) of tin and amalgam, which is used to make a mirror. More specifically, only a portion of the rear side of the mirror panel 20, rather than the entire rear side thereof, is coated with the light reflecting pigment 22. That is, a predetermined lower and square portion of the mirror panel 20 is not covered
with the light reflecting pigment 22. As a result, a portion of the transparent panel 21 of the mirror panel 20 is not covered with the light reflecting pigment 22, thereby allowing light to pass through it. The portion of the transparent panel 21 is referred to as an image display portion 27 for displaying still or moving images or characters generated by the image display device 40. During an industrial manufacturing process, the image display portion 27 may be manufactured by applying the light reflecting pigment 22 onto the entire rear side of the transparent panel 21 and removing the light reflecting pigment 22 from a portion of the rear side of the transparent panel 21. The image display device 40 is attached to the rear side of the mirror panel
20 so that still or moving images, such as a broadcast program, video, or a DVD film, or still or moving characters can be projected onto a front side of the mirror panel through the image display portion 27. In this embodiment, the image display device 40 includes a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panel 41. The LCD panel 41 is attached to the rear side of the mirror panel 20. In detail, the LCD panel 41 is generally made such that transparent electrodes are deposited on two pieces of glass plates coated with a polarizing layer and liquid crystal is interposed between the electrodes, thus forming an electrical field in the liquid crystal. A rear side of the LCD panel 41 is adhered with a backlight panel 42 whose size is almost equal to that of the LCD panel 41 and which is formed of an ElectroLuminescence (EL) sheet. A support panel 43, which supports the LCD panel 41 and the backlight panel 42, is mounted on a rear side of the backlight panel 42. Also, a print circuit board 44 is mounted on a rear side of the support panel 43. When a predetermined control signal is generated by the print circuit board 44 and applied to the transparent electrode of the LCD panel 41 , the liquid crystal at a particular point of the LCD panel 41 is arranged in a direction and light output from the backlight panel 42 selectively passes through the LCD panel 41 , thus enabling an image to be displayed on a front side of the LCD panel 41. As shown in FIG. 3, the image display device 40 is mounted on the rear side of the mirror panel 20 via a double-faced tape 30 adhered between front edges of the LCD panel 41 and the rear side of the mirror panel 20. The double-faced tape 30 is manufactured by applying an adhesive onto both sides of a cushion sheet
formed of elastic foam resin. The double-faced tape 30 lessens a shock delivered to the image display device 40 via the mirror panel 20. The multipurpose mirror 10 further includes a speaker 50 to output sound under the mirror panel 20. The speaker 50 is electrically connected to the print circuit board 44 of the image display device 40. Also, the multipurpose mirror 10 includes a case 12 that protects the speaker 50, and the mirror panel 20 to which the image display device 40 is attached, and supports and fixes the edges of the mirror panel 20. The case 12 is divided into two parts, i.e., an upper mirror panel receiving portion 14 and a lower speaker-receiving portion 15, by a partition 13 protruding backward. The case 12 is shaped to a picture frame such that a front side of the mirror panel receiving portion 14 is open to reveal the front side of the mirror panel 20. As illustrated in FIG. 2, sound holes 18, through which sound is output forward, are formed at a front part of the speaker-receiving portion 15. Also, input/output terminals 17 are installed at the front part of the speaker-receiving portion 15 so as to input characters or image signals or sound signals into the image display device 40 or output characters or image signals or sound signals from the image display device 40. The input/output terminals 17 enables the image display device 40 to receive a broadcast signal, a video signal, or a DVD signal, or be used as a monitor of a computer. An on/off button 16, which is used to drive the image display device 40, is further installed at the front part of the speaker-receiving portion 15 of the case 12. Like the speaker 50, the on/off button 16 and the input/output terminals 17 are electrically connected to the print circuit board 44 of the image display device 40. The case 12 may be manufactured using an aluminum chassis or wood, which is light and has a luxury styling. Further, it is possible to decorate the case 12. However, materials for the case 12 are not limited to the above description. An application of the multipurpose mirror 10 will now be described. The multipurpose mirror 10 can be used in every place, such as a beauty shop, a public bath, a bus terminal, and a railroad station, where installation of a mirror is allowed. However, in this disclosure, it is assumed that the multipurpose mirror 10 is installed in a beauty shop.
The multipurpose mirror 10 may be installed on a wall of the beauty shop. As illustrated with one-dash-dot lines shown in FIG. 3, a client 1 to have his/her hair done can look at himself/herself in the optical reflecting portion 25 of the multipurpose mirror 10. If the client 1 presses the on/off button 16 of the case 12 to turn on the image display device 40, the client 1 can view still or moving characters or images projected by the LCD panel 41 on the image display portion 27 of the mirror panel 20 and hear sound output from the speaker 50, as shown with a dotted line of FIG. 3. Since the image display portion 27 is installed at the lower part of the mirror panel 20, the client 1 does not feel uncomfortable while watching himself/herself. While the hair of the client 1 has undergone a permanent wave, he/she has to wait for a long time with his/her hair coated with a permanent wave solution. In this case, the client 1 can view still or moving characters or images of a broadcast program displayed on the image display device 40, thus removing boredom. As described above, a multipurpose mirror according to the present invention allows a user to see himself/herself in an optical reflecting portion and watch a broadcast program or video or DVD images displayed on an image display portion at the same time, without turning his/her head or inappropriately forcing his/her eyes to be turned. Accordingly, the client can watch his/her favorite programs or movies while, for example, receiving a cosmetic treatment at a beauty salon for a long time. The multipurpose mirror eliminates a need to purchase and install an additional image display apparatus so as to provide a viewer with still or moving characters or images, thereby saving installation costs thereof and not requiring an additional space. Additionally, if the multipurpose mirror is installed in a beauty shop, it is possible to increase working efficiency since clients need not turn their heads to alternately look in a mirror and watch a program on an image display apparatus. In addition, the multipurpose mirror can be installed in every place where installation of a general mirror is permitted, and a user can watch his/her figure in a mirror and appreciate a broadcast program or a film including a moving image at the same time, thus serving convenience of the user and providing pleasure to the user. While this invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to preferred embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the
spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. For instance, an image display device attached to a mirror may be formed of an organic EL panel or a Plasma Display Panel (PDP), unlike that described in this disclosure. In the multipurpose mirror according to this embodiment, an image display portion included in a mirror panel may be installed in an upper portion of the mirror panel, and a speaker may also be mounted above or in a right or left side outside the mirror panel.
Industrial Applicability A multipurpose mirror according to the present invention allows a user to comfortably see his/her figure therein and enjoy a broadcast program or a movie at the same time. Also, the multipurpose mirror can be installed in every place, such as a public bath, a beauty salon, or a waiting room of a public facility, where installation of a general mirror is allowed.
