Definitions

  • This invention concerns improvements to closures for metal cans, in particular for beverages or other food and non-food substances, provided with cov- ering means suitable for protection against dust and tampering, and for defining an additional printing surface that can be used for advertising and/or promotional purposes; the invention also concerns a method for performing a closure assembly for cans provided with a protective covering element that can be applied in advance to a closing member, in a fully shaped form or during the filling method of the cans.
  • WO-A-95/28328 illustrates the use of covering and protective means for cans comprising a film of heat-shrinkable plastic material, which is brought into contact with the upper end of a can by suitable positioning means, and subsequently heated to conform and adhere to the can during a subsequent cooling.
  • the covering element is shaped to conform to a central panel and to a peripheral wall of a closing member, the peripheral wall being necessary for seam folding or crimping the closing member to the edges of the can; in this case, the covering element extends to the upper edge of the can and is secured to the latter by a strip of adhesive material applied on the peripheral wall of the closing member, after the seaming step.
  • the application of the covering element must necessarily be carried out only on an already sealed can, after the closing member has already been seamed, and therefore after the usual method of filling and packaging the cans, in that, if it is applied in advance, it would be torn or removed by the seaming devices commonly provided for closing the can.
