Abstract

An apparatus and process for making relatively low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and increased dissolved oxygen in aqueous solutions uses direct oxygen reduction at a gas diffusion interface which is spaced from an electrochemically stable anode, wherein the aqueous electrolyte has a minimal amount of metal ions or hardness which will compromise cathode performance. The process can operate on a side stream from the main receiving water and then inject the treated solution back into said stream. Alternatively, feed water from one source can be fed into the electrolytic generator and injected into a separate receiving water. If peroxide residual is not desirable, an activated carbon canister can decompose the peroxide, thusly increasing the dissolved oxygen concentration. The process generates peroxide from water and electricity and oxygen (from air) and does not affect the pH or chemical composition of the receiving water.
