Definitions

  • TRANSMISSION AND FILTER The present invention relates to a transmission and to a filter, in particular a micro filtration filter, as defined in the preamble of claim 1 and further independent claims.
  • Transmissions are well known in the art as a means to convert engine power into useable propulsion for vehicles. For their proper operation they are lubricated with specific transmission oil, which at automatic transmissions is often denoted by the term ATF-fluid, i.e. automatic transmission fluid. From time to time it may occur, due to the many operating parts in a transmission casing, that a failure occurs, and that repair is required. In the case of transmissions such repair, due to the complex nature of this machine part, such repair is denoted by the term rebuild of the transmission.
  • the transmission is, for the purpose of saving time to the car owner, exchanged for another transmission, a rebuilt one.
  • a dedicated rebuild industry exists. They most often check, exchange and/or or re-work all parts of the transmission before offering it as a rebuilt transmission. It is desired by the rebuild industry to acquire a high degree of functional reliability of such rebuilt transmissions, not in the last place because of the large costs of warranties that are involved in the automotive field of business. It is therefore an object of the present invention to enhance the quality and reliability of such rebuild transmissions, and to provide the industry with products supporting the same. According to the invention such may is achieved by including the measures provided by the characterising portion of claim 1.
  • the oil used is at least largely kept free from particles and effects of operational wear of such transmissions, which in itself poses an improvement to many if not all of original equipment manufacturer provided transmissions where the degree of such effect is commonly regarded to be insufficient to justify the costs of such filter device in the transmission.
  • another phenomenon exists that at least for increasing the reputation of rebuild transmissions renders such justification, namely the presence of debris of worked transmission parts.
  • These may, compared to particles from ordinary wear of rotating and/or intermeshing parts be relatively large, i.e. in the form of chunks like burrs, e.g. burrs that come off only after some while of operation.
  • Such debris may according to the invention even promote further development of wear particles and even malfunctioning of parts, so that filtration of oil is desired.
  • These phenomena that may to a comparable degree also occur at new transmissions may in particular at modern transmission even be harmful on short term.
  • the latter is due to a relatively large amount of increasingly fine tuned solenoids at such modern transmissions, which solenoids especially because of their precise operation, may become disadvantageous ⁇ affected in their functioning and even blocked by such chunks. Increase of number of such solenoids raises the chance of one of them becoming affected, and thereby the functioning of the transmission.
  • the filter device is at least formed by a strainer filter. The new structure is important due to its usage in rebuilt or remanufactured transmissions.
  • a filtration device thus incorporated in a transmission is favourably and economically incorporated when it is provided within one of said leads between casing and transmission part. No redesign of transmission is required in this manner, while also the filter may easily be exchanged for a new one.

  • surface filtering based, pleated paper filters such chunks might in odd cases even damage such surface.
  • the presence of such strainer in advance of the hydraulics filter enables future savings in that the strainer may at a relatively lower cost be exchanged, while the proper functioning of the hydraulics filter is elongated.

  • Each filter has its own flow path within the assembly.
  • the large particle catching ability is always functioning. Rather than at in-line filters that are conventionally and solely applied, which are equipped with internal by-pass valves for safety purposes, in this design, the intent is to never have any fluid that is unfiltered. All of the fluid will pass through the strainer. The latter will never plug, due to its large surface area Favourably, the cost of such strainer in addition to a hydraulics filter is in accordance with an even further elaboration of the invention decreased by the strainer being incorporated in the filter housing, in particular by a modification of the entry opening of the housing, allowing the insertion of a strainer, before connecting a hose to the filter.
