PATENT DOCKET REF. 60082US US EXPRESS MAIL NO. ER241261275US TRAINING UMBRELLA GOLF GRIP
RELATED APPLICATIONS This application claims the benefit of the priority date of co-pending Provisional U.S. patent application number 60/491 ,892, filed 8/1/2003, of Peterson entitled "TRAINING UMBRELLA GOLF GRIP," the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by this reference. FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to golf grip reminder aids, and more particularly, to a golf training umbrella grip on an umbrella shaft to promote proper golf club hand positioning. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION A number of golf grip training aids have been developed for attachment to a standard golf club grip. Such aids have been recognized as helpful for developing muscle memory in a user's hands in order to help master a proper golf grip. However, until the present invention, no golf grip reminder training aid adaptable to a commonly used item, such as an umbrella, was known to be available. Therefore, it is a motivation of the present invention to provide a training umbrella golf grip having a contoured handle adapted to maintain a user's hands in a proper golf grip position. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A training umbrella golf grip for reminding a golfer of a proper golf grip, including an annular elongated grip for attachment to an umbrella shaft includes at least one contoured protrusion extending from the annular elongated grip. A number of contoured recesses are defined in the annular elongated grip. The at least one contoured protrusion has surfaces adapted to maintain a user's hands
in a proper golf grip position. The annular elongated grip is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of rubber, plastic, and leather. The at least one protrusion and the number of recesses are adapted to maintain a user's hands in a proper golf grip position. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The various features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the attached drawings in which like reference characters designate the same or similar parts throughout the figures, and in which: FIG. 1 and FIG.1A show differing side views of one embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a side view of an alternate embodiment of the present invention having a single protruding member with a recess for accepting a thumb; FIG. 3 is a side view of FIG. 1 , further showing hands gripping the invention; FIG. 4 is a side view of FIG. 2, further showing a hand gripping the invention; and FIG. 5-FIG. 9 show other aspects of embodiments of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to FIG. 1 , there shown is a side view of one embodiment of a training umbrella golf grip of the present invention. There shown is an umbrella 10 comprising an umbrella shaft 12, an annular elongated grip 14 attached to the umbrella shaft 12. Also included are at least one contoured protrusion, in this example, a first contoured protrusion 16, and a second contoured protrusion 18 extending from the annular elongated grip 14. The annular elongated grip 14 further includes a plurality of contoured recesses 20 defined in the annular elongated grip. The first and second contoured protrusions 16, 18 have surfaces 17, 19 respectively, that, together with the plurality of contoured recesses 20, are adapted to maintain a user's hands in a proper golf grip position as best shown in FIG. 3.
The annular elongated grip may be formed from a material such as rubber, plastic, leather, any typical material used in golf grips and equivalent
materials. The grip may be molded or otherwise constructed in accordance with conventional manufacturing processes.
Referring now jointly to FIG.1 and FIG. 3, in one example embodiment, the plurality of recesses define portions of the annular elongated grip capable of receiving and urging a user's hands into a proper golf grip position, wherein a first of the protrusions is positioned on the annular elongated grip for interposition between a thumb and forefinger of a user's lower hand, and a second of the protrusions is positioned on the annular elongated grip for interposition between a thumb and forefinger of a user's upper hand. In one example embodiment, the first protrusion is generally wedge-shaped with a recess 17 for thumb positioning. In one example embodiment, the second protrusion is also generally wedge- shaped.
Referring now to FIG. 2, there shown is a side view of an alternate embodiment of a training umbrella golf grip of the present invention. There shown is an umbrella 10A comprising an umbrella shaft 12A, an annular elongated grip 14A for attachment to the umbrella shaft 12A. Also included is one contoured protrusion, in this example, a contoured protrusion 16A extending from the annular elongated grip 14A. The annular elongated grip 14A further includes a plurality of contoured recesses 20A defined in the annular elongated grip. The protrusion 16A and the plurality of recesses 20A are adapted to maintain a user's hands in a proper golf grip position as best shown in FIG. 4.
As with the configuration of FIG. 1 , the annular elongated grip may be formed from a material such as rubber, plastic, leather, any typical material used in golf grips and equivalent materials. The grip may be molded or otherwise constructed in accordance with conventional manufacturing processes.
Referring now jointly to FIG.2 and FIG. 4, in one example embodiment, the plurality of recesses define portions of the annular elongated grip capable of receiving and urging a user's hands into a proper golf grip position, wherein the protrusion is positioned on the annular elongated grip for interposition between a
thumb and forefinger of a user's hand. In one example embodiment, the protrusion is generally wedge-shaped with a recess 17A for thumb positioning.
Referring now jointly to FIG. 5 through FIG. 9 wherein various views of a training umbrella golf grip for reminding a golfer of a proper golf grip are shown. The training umbrella golf grip includes an annular elongated grip for attachment to an umbrella shaft including a continuous spirally grooved surface having a plurality of contoured recesses defined in the annular elongated grip; and at least one contoured protrusion extending from the annular elongated grip, wherein the at least one contoured protrusion and the plurality of contoured recesses have adjoining surfaces adapted to urge a user's hands into a proper golf grip position.
In one embodiment the annular elongated grip is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of rubber, plastic, and leather.
In another embodiment as shown in FIG. 7, for example, the plurality of contoured recesses define portions of the annular elongated grip capable of receiving and urging a user's hands into a proper golf grip position, wherein the at least one contoured protrusion includes a first protrusion is positioned on the annular elongated grip for interposition between a thumb and forefinger of a user's lower hand, and a second protrusion is positioned on the annular elongated grip for interposition between a thumb and forefinger of a user's upper hand. The invention has been described herein in considerable detail in order to comply with the Patent Statutes and to provide those skilled in the art with the information needed to apply the novel principles of the present invention, and to construct and use such exemplary and specialized components as are required. However, it is to be understood that the invention may be carried out by specifically different equipment and devices, and that various modifications, both as to the equipment details and operating procedures, may be accomplished without departing from the true spirit and scope of the present invention. For example, the training umbrella golf grip of the present invention may be constructed for a right-handed golfer or a left-handed golfer.
