Abstract

The invention discloses nutritional supplement and a method of obtaining a nutritional supplement obtained by extracting juice from a plant of Medicago sativa, more commonly known as Lucerne or Alfalfa.

Description

Nutritional Supplement extracted from alfalfa (medicago sativa).
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a nutritional supplement.
More particularly, the present invention relates to a nutritional supplement extracted from Lucerne.
BACKGROUND TO INVENTION
The plant known as Lucerne or -Alfalfa is widely used as a feed supplement for cattle. Normally the Lucerne is dried in order to prevent mould, thereby prolonging its usefulness, and is thereafter kept in storage until needed to feed the cattle.
It is an object of the invention to suggest a nutritional supplement, which is obtained from a Lucerne plant.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to the invention, a method of obtaining a nutritional supplement includes the steps of extracting juice from a plant of the genus Medicago.
The plant may be from the species sativa.
The plant may be commonly known as Lucerne or Alfalfa.
The method may include the step of shredding or pulverising the plant.
The method may include the step of compressing the plant in order to extract juice contained in cells of the plant.
The method may include the step of homogenising the plant in order to extract juice contained in cells of the plant. The method may include the step of dehydrating the juice to obtain a powder.
Also according to the invention, a nutritional supplement includes a liquid extract obtained from a plant of the genus Medicago.
The plant may be from the species saήva.
The plant may be commonly known as Lucerne or Alfalfa.
The liquid extract may include particles of the plant.
The nutritional supplement may include a suspension of particles of the plant in the liquid extract obtained from the plant.
The nutritional supplement may have a pH balance of between 4 to 5, for example such as 4.36.
The nutritional supplement may include the following: a) 0 — 1 % phosphorus b) 5 - 10 % Potassium c) 1 - 2 % Calcium d) 0.5 - 1 % Magnesium e) 5000 - 7000 mg/kg Sodium f) 200 - 300 mg/kg Copper g) 200 - 300 mg/kg Zinc h) 30 — 45 mg/kg Manganese i) 4 - 5 % Nitrogen j) 20 - 30 % protein k) 0.1 - 0.3 % fibre 1) 0.1 - 0.3 % fat
The nutritional supplement may be adapted to be used with feed for cattle.
The nutritional supplement maybe adapted to be used as a fertilizer for plants.
The nutritional supplement may be adapted to be used as a fungicide for plants. The nutritional supplement may be adapted to be used as a dietary supplement for human consumption.
The invention extends to a feed for cattle including a nutritional supplement as set out herein.
The invention extends to a fertilizer for plants including a nutritional supplement as set out herein.
The invention extends to a fungicide for plants including a nutritional supplement as set out herein.
The invention extends to a dietary supplement for human consumption including a nutritional supplement as set out herein.

In the drawings there is shown a block diagram of a method for obtaining a nutritional supplement in accordance with the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING
Referring to the drawing, a block diagram of a method for obtaining a nutritional supplement accordance to the invention, generally indicated by reference numeral 10, is shown.
In a first step 12, a crop of a plant of the genus Medicago, more particularly of the species astiva, for example such as the commonly known Lucerne or Alfalfa, is harvested and then, in a second step 14, the plant is shredded and pulverised to release as much juice as possible from its plant cells. In a third step 16, the shredded plant is compressed to express its juice for collection in fourth step 18. The juice of the plant forms the nutritional supplement.
The nutritional supplement can have a pH balance of between 4 to 5, for example such as 4.36.
The nutritional supplement can include the following: a) 0 — 1 % phosphorus b) 5 - 10 % Potassium c) 1 — 2 % Calcium d) 0.5 - 1 % Magnesium e) 5000 - 7000 mg/kg Sodium f) 200 - 300 mg/kg Copper g) 200 - 300 mg/kg Zinc h) 30 — 45 mg/kg Manganese i) 4 - 5 % Nitrogen j) 20 - 30 % protein k) 0.1 - 0.3 % fibre 1) 0.1 - 0.3 % fat
The nutritional supplement can be used for a variety of purposes, for example such as a nutritional supplement for use with feed for cattle, as a fungicide or a fertilizer for plants, or as a dietary supplement for human consumption.
The method of obtaining the nutritional supplement can include the step of homogenising the plant juice. Such homogenising can provide better absorption results during use thereof as mentioned above.
The method can also include the step of dehydrating the plant juice to obtain a nutritional supplement in a powder form. This powder can then either be used directly, such as in feed for cattle, or it can be dissolved in a liquid prior to use, such as in a plant fertiliser.

Claims

1. A method of obtaining a nutritional supplement including the steps of extracting juice from a plant of the genus Medicago.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the plant is from the species sativa.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the plant is commonly known as Lucerne or Alfalfa.
4. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, which includes the step of shredding or pulverising the plant.
5. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, which includes the step of compressing the plant in order to extract juice contained in cells of the plant.
6. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, which includes the step of homogenising the plant in order to extract juice contained in cells of the plant.
7. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, which includes the step of dehydrating the juice to obtain a powder.
8. A nutritional supplement including a liquid extract obtained from a plant of the genus Medicago.
9. A nutritional supplement as claimed in claim 8, in which the plant is from the species sativa.
10. A nutritional supplement as claimed in claim 8 or 9, in which the plant is commonly known as Lucerne or Alfalfa.
11. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 10, in which the liquid extract includes particles of the plant.
12. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 11, which includes a suspension of particles of the plant in the liquid extract obtained from the plant.
13. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 12, which has a pH balance of between 4 to 5, for example such as 4.36.
14. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 13, which includes the following: a) 0 — 1 % phosphorus b) 5 - 10 % Potassium c) 1 - 2 % Calcium d) 0.5 - 1 % Magnesium e) 5000 - 7000 mg/kg Sodium f) 200 - 300 mg/kg Copper g) 200 - 300 mg/kg Zinc h) 30 — 45 mg/kg Manganese i) 4 - 5 % Nitrogen j) 20 - 30 % protein k) 0.1 - 0.3 % fibre 1) 0.1 - 0.3 % fat
15. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14, which is adapted to be used with feed for cattle.
16. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14, which is adapted to be used as a fertilizer for plants.
17. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14, which is adapted to be used as a fungicide for plants.
18. A nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14, which is adapted to be used as a dietary supplement for human consumption.
19. A feed for cattle including a nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14.
20. A fertilizer for plants including a nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14.
21. A fungicide for plants including a nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14.
22. A dietary supplement for human consumption including a nutritional supplement as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 14.
23. The invention extends to cattle feed containing a liquid extract obtained from a Lucerne plant.
24. A method of obtaining a nutritional supplement substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying schematic drawing.
25. A nutritional supplement substantially as hereinbefore described.
