BROADCASTTING SYSTEM WITH CONTENTS-DEPENDENT CONDITIONAL ACCESS
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a broadcasting system, more specifically, to a broadcasting system which provides contents-dependent conditional access.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION With rapid development of bi-directional communications, various information are expected to be distributed through user televisions. FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating a typical broadcasting system. As shown in FIG. 1, the broadcasting system (10) comprises a contents provider system (11), a broadcasting transmission system (12), set-top boxes (13) located in indoors, and user televisions (14) connected to the set-top boxes (13). The contents provider system (11) supplies contents, and the broadcasting transmission system (12) transmits the contents supplied from the contents provider system (11) after encoding and multiplexing the contents in a form of a packetized broadcasting signals. The set-top boxes (13a to 13n) located in indoors perform demultiplexing and decoding of the broadcasting signal transmitted through a broadcasting network (15) and deliver it to the user televisions (14). In the broadcasting system, there is required to impose restrictions on access to some contents. Specifically, chargeable channels are such a case. Only paid subscribers can access to the chargeable channels, and the contents provider can make money from the service. Such a conditional access provides channels-dependent conditional access, but does not provide contents-dependent conditional access, i order words, such a conditional access restricts access to the channels depending on whether the viewers are paid subscribers to a broadcasting
transmission system (12) or not, but it can not impose restrictions on specified contents. Contents providers would like to allow only specified users to conditionally access to their contents. For example, in a case that the contents provider is a government, he sometimes want to distribute the content "A" only to Seoul-public servants and the content "B" only to fire officers. But, the conventional conditional access can not actively meet with the situation.
DISCLOSURE TECHNICAL PROBLEM An object of the present invention is to provide a broadcasting system which provides contents-dependent conditional access. Another object of the present invention is to provide a broadcasting system which allows a contents provider to actively impose restrictions on his contents by assigning a recipient group to the contents, considering the kind and the detailed description of the contents.
TECHNICAL SOLUTION The above objects and others which will be described in the detailed description of the specification can be accomplishable by provision of a broadcasting system comprising a contents provider system that provides contents, a broadcasting transmission system that encodes, multiplexes and packetizes the contents in a form of a broadcasting signal and transmits it through a broadcasting network, and digital broadcasting receivers that receive the broadcasting signal and deliver it to displays after demultiplexing and decoding of the signal, wherein the contents provider system supplies the contents after assigning a recipient group to the contents, the broadcasting transmission system transmits the broadcasting signal after extracting the digital broadcasting receivers' identification numbers (IDs) of subscribers who belong to the recipient group assigned by the contents provider system referring to a subscriber
database that maintains subscribed users and inserting the extracted digital broadcasting receivers' IDs into the contents, and the digital broadcasting receivers that have the same ID with the extracted ones treat the received broadcasting signal and display the contents, and others that have different IDs from the extracted ones can not display the contents.
ADVANTAGEOUS EFFECT The broadcasting system according to the present invention enables each of the contents providers to selectively provide users with the contents, by assigning a recipient group to the contents considering the kind and the detailed description of the contents. That is, the broadcasting system according to the present invention provides contents-dependent conditional access by assigning a recipient group varying with contents. The broadcasting system according to the present invention is particularly suitable for the distribution of government's information to a specified recipient group among various recipient groups (for example, citizens, public servants, a profit making or nonprofit making incorporation, and so on).

MODE FOR INVENTION
FIG. 2 is a block diagram showing a preferred embodiment of a broadcasting system in accordance with the present invention. As shown in FIG. 2, a recipient group is assigned to contents which are supplied from a contents provider system (10) to a broadcasting transmission system (20). That is, the contents provider system (10) plays a role not only to simply supply contents to the broadcasting transmission system (20), but also to assign a recipient group to the contents. Therefore, the contents provider system (10) supplies to the broadcasting transmission system (20) the contents to which the recipient group was assigned. Allocation of the recipient group to the contents is suitably carried out considering the kind and the detailed description of the contents. For example, if the kind and the detailed description of content "A" is regarded to be suitable to a recipient group "a", the contents provider system (10) assigns the recipient group "a" to the content "A" and supplies the recipient group- assigned content to the broadcasting transmission system (20). hi the same manner, if the kind and the detailed description of content "B" is regarded to be suitable to a recipient group "b", the contents provider system (10) assigns the recipient group "b" to the content "B" and supplies the recipient group-assigned content to the broadcasting transmission system (20).
Specifically, suppose that heavy flood is anticipated in Seoul in a few hours and a government would emergently call out Seoul-public servants in order to cope with the situation. In this case, the contents provider system (10) maintained by the government assigns "Seoul public servants" as a recipient group to the content "It is urgently required that Seoul-public servants attend to the office no later than 05:00"", and transmits the recipient group-assigned content to the broadcasting transmission system (20). As another specific example, let's suppose that the government would like to inform Seoul residents of forum on restoration of the Chunggye-river. hi this situation, the government assigns "Seoul citizens" as a recipient group to the content "Forum on restoration of the Chunggye-river is held on May 21, 2003. It is kindly
acknowledged for Seoul citizens to attend to the forum for the amicable settlement on outstanding questions." and transmits the recipient group-assigned content to the broadcasting transmission system (20). Herein, the recipient group can be assigned in a general or separate manner. General allocation includes "Seoul public servants" or "Seoul citizens." Separate allocation is to assign recipient's specific identification data (for example, name, address and resident registration number, and so on). The former does not require for the contents provider system (10) to maintain an additional database, but the latter requires maintaining an additional database. In a case of the government, using the database maintained by the office of national tax administration and/or an administrative office, the recipient's specific identification data can be assigned. Thereafter, the content to which a recipient group was assigned is delivered from the contents provider system (10) to the broadcasting transmission system (20).
The broadcasting transmission system (20) extracts both subscribers who belong to the recipient group assigned by the provider system and set-top LDs of the subscribers referring to a subscriber database (21) that maintains subscribed users. And then, the system (20) inserts the extracted set-top LDs into the contents, and performs encoding and multiplexing of the contents. The packetized broadcasting signal is transmitted through a broadcasting network (50). Herein, the set-top IDs are inserted into a head of the packet and determine descrambling of the contents loaded in a payload. If necessary, the broadcasting transmission system (20) may provide the contents provider system (10) with a list of users extracted in order to inform of whom the contents have been delivered to. As a broadcasting network (50) to be used in the broadcasting system of the present invention, a digital satellite broadcasting network, a digital terrestrial broadcasting network, a digital cable broadcasting network can be mentioned.
The packetized broadcasting signal is transmitted to set-top boxes (30a to 30n) located
at indoors. Of the set-top boxes (30a to 30n), the boxes (30a to 30m) that have the same identification information with the ones allocated by the broadcasting transmission system (10) treat the signal into a storage, and display it on user televisions (40a to 40m). To the contrary, the boxes (30m+ι to 3 On) that have different identification information can not descramble the signal such that they can not display it on their displays. As a result thereof, by assigning suitable recipient group to the contents considering the kind and the description of the contents, contents-dependent conditional access can be achievable.
The broadcasting system according to the present invention applies to the cases where contents-dependent conditional access is required. The broadcasting system is particularly suitable for ones having various recipient groups varied with contents, for example a government. Currently, T-Government projects that mediate bi-directional digital televisions are emerging as an issue, rather than E-Government projects that mediate computers. It is believed that the broadcasting system according to the present invention would contribute to the operation of T-government system.
FIG. 3 is a block diagram showing another preferred embodiment of a broadcasting system in accordance with the present invention. FIG. 3 illustrates a specific embodiment in which the contents provider would like to distribute certain content to users "b", "c" and "p", and the users "b" and "c" subscribed to a broadcasting transmission system "A", and the user "p" subscribed to a broadcasting transmission system "B". The contents provider system (10) specifically assigns, as a recipient group, the identification information of the users "b", "c" and "p" to the content, referring to a database (11) maintained by the system (10). The broadcasting transmission system (20) extracts both subscribers who belong to the recipient group assigned by the provider system and set-top LDs of the subscribers referring to a subscriber database (21)
that maintains subscribed users. Thereafter, the content to which a recipient group was separately assigned is delivered to a broadcasting transmission system 20A. The broadcasting transmission system 20A extracts both subscribers who belong to the recipient group assigned by the provider system and set-top LDs of the subscribers, referring to a subscriber database (21) that maintains subscribed users, hi the example, the system (10) extracts the set-top LDs of users "b" and "c", referring to a subscriber database 21A. The extracted set-top LDs are inserted into the content and transmitted through a broadcasting network 50A to set-top boxes 30a to 30m. Of the set-top boxes 30a to 30m, only two set-top boxes 30b and 30c have a right to treat the received signal and to display the content to the users "b" and "c." The other set-top boxes excluding the boxes 30b and 30c can not descramble the signal such that they can not display the content. Preferably, the broadcasting transmission system 20A delivers a subscriber list which is matched with the recipient group assigned to the contents provider system (10). That is, the broadcasting transmission system 20 A informs the contents provider system (10) that the content was delivered to two users "b" and "c" of three recipients. Then, the contents provider system (10) consults other broadcasting transmission systems whether the system can deliver the content to the user "p". In the example, the broadcasting transmission system 20B can do so. As thus, the contents provider system (10) delivers the recipient group-assigned content to the broadcasting transmission system 20B, and the system 20B extracts the set-top LD of the user "p", referring to a subscriber database 21B and inserts the set-top ID into the content. Transmission of the content through a broadcasting network 50B to set-top boxes 30m+1 to 30n is performed. Of the set-top boxes 30m+1 to 3 On, only set-top box 3 Op has a right to treat the received signal and to displays the content to the user "p", and the others can not descramble the signal such that they can not display the content.
FIG. 4 is a flow chart illustrating a broadcasting system in accordance with the present
invention. As shown in FIG. 3, the contents provider system assigns a recipient group to the contents and delivers the contents to the broadcasting transmission system (SI 00). The broadcasting transmission system extracts set-top LDs of users who belongs to the recipient group, inserts the set-sep LDs into the contents, and packetizes them through encoding and multiplexing (S200). Thereafter, the broadcasting transmission system transmits the packet through a broadcasting network in a form of a broadcasting signal (S300). Each of set-top boxes located in an indoor judges whether one's set-top LD is the same with the assigned LD (S400). Set-top boxes that satisfy the condition performs treatment of the broadcasting signal (including descrambling, demultiplexing and decoding) and display the contents to user televisions (S500). Other set-top boxed can not descramble the broadcasting signal such that they can not provide users with the contents.
In a meanwhile, Figs. 1 to 4 illustrate the broadcasting system based on client's terminal consisting of set-top boxes and user televisions connected thereto. These are preferred embodiments. The broadcasting system according to the present invention can be applicable various digital broadcasting receivers which demultiplex and decode broadcasting signals transmitted through a broadcasting network and deliver them to displays.
