従来、 分散フラットファイバを作製するためにはコアを中心としてフアイ バの径方向に屈折率差の異なる多層構造 (mulU- layer structure)としたものが 作製されている (非特許文献 1 : Y.LIU他、 "Design and fabrication of locally dispersion-flattened large effective area fibers ECOC 98 pp. 37-38 (Madrid, Spain), 1998年 9月、 および非特許文献 2 : P. Bachmann他、 'Dispersion-flattened single-mode fibers prepared with PCVD: Performance, limitations, design optimization" IEEE J. Lightwave Technol. Vol.4, No.7, pp.858-863 (1986年) を参照)。
また、 フォトニック結晶構造を用いて分散フラットファイバを作製する方法 も開発されている。
上記の従来の多層構造のファイバにおいては、 その屈折率差と各層の厚みを 厳密に制御しなくてはならなかった。 その設計例を非特許文献 1から引用して F I G.8に示す。 同図において、 Δは上記屈折率差、 Rはファイバの中心から の距離を表わす。 その設計値からのずれ (displacement) が特性に及ぼす悪影 響は、 たとえば非特許文献 2に述べられている。 しかし、 多層構造のファイバ の屈折率差と各層の厚みを厳密に制御することは実際上容易でない。
他方、 非特許文献 3 (William H. Reeves他、 "Demonstration of
ultra-flattened dispersion in photonic crystal fibers Optics Express Vol. ΙΟ,Νο.14 pp.609—613 (2002年) (http:
//www .opticsexpress.org/abstract.cfm?URl=0PEX-10-14-609) )から引用した F I G.9に示すような従来のフォトニック結晶構造を利用した分散フラット ファイバでは、 光ファイバの損失が大きいという難点があった。 引用文献 3で は、 フォトニック結晶構造を利用した分散フラットファイバにおいて、 0. 5 8 dBZmというきわめて大きな損失が報告されている。
また、 フォトニック結晶構造を利用した従来の分散フラットファイバは、 零 分散(zero dispersion)で、 かつ分散フラットな特性を実現できる構造の許容範 囲はきわめて狭いという別の難点もあった。 たとえば、 フォトニック結晶構造 を構成する各空孔の直径がわずか 2 %変化しただけで、 その分散スロープが 0. 02 p sZkmZnm2程度まで変化し、 分散フラットファイバとしての特性を 示さなくなる。 発明の開示
本発明の目的は、 従来技術における上述のような課題を解決するためにな されたもので、 偏波保持特性 (polarization-maintaining characteristics) をもち、 かつ少なくとも一つの偏波モード (polarization mode) の群速度分散 の波長依存性が小さい特性を有する分散フラットファイバを提供することにあ る。
上記目的を達成するため、本発明の分散フラットファイバ(10, 50) は、 ガラスもしくはプラスチック、 その他使用する波長において透明な媒質のいず れかを材料として形成されている光フアイバであって、 上記光ファイバの断面 の中心付近において光を導波するコア部 (11, 12, 51, 52) と、 上記 光ファイバの長手方向に沿って形成されかつ該光ファイバの断面において概略 一定間隔をおいて概略一様に分散配置された複数の空孔 (13, 14, 53, 54) を有し、 該複数の空孔はそれぞれ上記光ファイバの長手方向に沿ってそ の平均的な直径が概略一定値である概略円形、 概略楕円形もしくは概略多角形 の形状を有し、 かつ該空孔の中は真空、 もしくは使用する波長において透明か つ上記媒質よりも屈折率の低い気体、 液体ないし固体で満たされているクラッ ド部とを有し、 上記光ファイバはその断面において上記空孔の配置を上記コア 部の中心を対称軸とする 2回以下の回転対称としたフォトニック結晶構造を有 し、 かつ動作波長における群速度分散の波長依存性が通常の単一モードフアイ バよりも小さい低分散スロープ性(low dispersion slope characteristics)を 有し、 上記コア部はその中心にその周辺部よりも屈折率の高い高屈折率領域 (high refractive index area)を有し、 該コア部のみ群速度分散が正常分散 (normal dispersion)であることを特徴とする。
従来、 分散フラットを実現するには複雑な多層構造の屈折率分布コア efractive index dispersion optical corejを必要としたが、 本発明では群 速度分散の波長依存性が大きい単純なステップインデックス構造(step- index structure)であっても、 クラッドに空孔を付加すると分散フラットが実現でき る。また、モードフィールド径を小さくでき、高非線形性(higher nonlinear ity) が得られる。
ここで、好ましくは、上記コア部の屈折率分布が、ステップインデックス型、 グレーテッド、 graded - index)型、 マッチドクラッド (multト cladding)型、 もし くは W型、 三重クラッド (triple- cladding) 型、 四重クラッド (quadruple- cladding)型等の多層型(mul t iple- layer type)であるとすることが できる。
また、 好ましくは、 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの上記動作波長 における群速度分散の波長依存性が ± 0 . 0 3 p s / km/n m2以下であると することができる。
また、 好ましくは、 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの上記動作波長 における群速度分散の波長依存性が土 0 . 0 1 p s Z km/nm2以下であると することができる。
また、 好ましくは、 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードの上記動作波長に おける群速度分散の値の差の絶対値が 0 . 4 p s Z kmZnm以下であるとす ることができる。
また、 好ましくは、 上記光ファイバのモードフィールド径が 3 以下であ るとすることができる。
本発明では、 上記のように、 高屈折率部と低屈折率部からなるコア部と、 光 ファイバの断面において概略一定間隔をおいて概略一様に分散配置された複数 の空孔が形成されたクラッド部とを有し、 その空孔の配置を光ファイバの断面 においてコアの中心を対称軸とする 2回以下の回転対称としたので、 偏波保持 特性をもち、 その少なくとも一つの偏波モードの群速度分散の波長依存性が小 さい分散フラットファイバが得られる。 図面の簡単な説明

^下に、 図面を参照して、 本発明を実施するための好ましい形態を詳細に説 明する。
第 1の実施形態
F I G. 1に、 本発明の第 1の実施形態における光ファイバの横断面の中心付 近を拡大して示す。 後述のように、 分散フラットファイバとして機能するこの 光ファイバ 1 0は、 例えば、 石英ガラスでできているが、 石英ガラスの代わり に、 P MMA (plymethylmethacryl ate : ポリメタクリル酸メチル) 等のプラス チック、 もしくは使用する波長において透明な媒質であればそれ以外の材質で あってもかまわない。 光ファイバ 1 0の光を導く部分であるコア部は、 本構造例では、 中心の高屈 折率部 1 1とその周囲の低屈折率部 1 2からなる。 高屈折率部 1 1は光フアイ バ 1 0の材質が例えば石英ガラスの場合は、 その石英ガラスにゲルマニウム、 リン等の添加物を加えることで実現できる。 低屈折率部 1 2は高屈折率部 1 0 よりも屈折率が低い部分であり、 上記添加物の量を髙屈折率部に比較して少な く、 あるいは添加しないこと、 もしくはフッ素などを添加することで実現でき る。
コア部の低屈折率部 1 2の周囲の部分はクラッド部であり、 クラッド部には 第 1の空孔 1 3および、 これとは内径の異なる第 2の空孔 1 4が、 概略正三角 形を形成するように配列されている。 第 1の空孔 1 3および第 2の空孔 1 4の 配列は六方最密構造 (hexagonal closes t s tructure)であるが、 配列はこれにか ぎらず、 概略一様に分布していればよい。 本構造例では、 第 2の空孔 1 4はコ ァの高屈折率部 1 2を挟んで対向する一組の空孔である。
本実施形態の分散フラットファイバは、 VAD法 (vapor- phase axial depos i t ion process:気相軸付け法) 等で作製したガラスファイバ母材に、 ド リルなどで穴をあけたのち、 溶融延伸(mel t ing and drawing)する方法、 あるい は石英ガラスの棒および石英ガラスの細管 (narrow tube, tubulus)を束ねて母 材とし、 それを溶融延伸する方法などで作製できる。 これらの方法により大気 中で作製した場合には、 空孔の中は空気で満たされる。
以下に、 F I G. 1の構造の本発明の第 1の実施形態の分散フラットファイバ における実際の実施例とその特性を説明する。
第 1の実施例
第 1の実施例では、各空孔 1 3、 1 4の隣接する空孔の中心間の距離 Λを 4. l m、 第 1の空孔 1 3の直径 d 1と上記距離 Λとの比を 0 . 3 5、 高屈折率 部 1 1の直径 d aと上記距離 Λとの比を 0 . 7、 第 2の空孔 1 4の直径 d 2と 上記距離 Λとの比を 0. 9 、 石英ガラスに対する比屈折率差 Δを高屈折率部 1 1を +1. 5%、 低屈折率部 12を一 0. 3%とした。 本実施例において、 コ ァ部 11、 12のみの群速度分散は、 波長 1800 nm以下において正常分散 であり、 群速度分散の波長依存性は波長 1425nm〜1775 nmの範囲に おいて 03 p s/kmZnm2を超えるが、 上記記載のクラッドの空孔の特 性により群速度分散の波長依存性を低減することができる。 また、 コア部の中 心を対称軸とする 2回以下の回転対称としているので、 偏波保持特性が得られ る。 本実施例において、 コア部 11、 12の屈折率分布は、 中心から半径方向 に向かって、 高屈折率部 11→石英ガラスよりも低い屈折率の低屈折率部 12 →クラッド部を形成する無添加の石英ガラスと変化しており、 中心部に高屈折 率部 11を持つ、 いわゆる W型の屈折率分布となる。
F I G.2に、 本実施例の分散フラットファイバの群速度分散の波長依存性を 示す。 同図の実線の曲線および破線の曲線は、 本実施例における直交するそれ ぞれの偏波モードに対する分散特性を示す。 実線の偏波モードの群速度分散の 波長依存性が土 0. 03 p s Zkm/nm2以内となる波長域は、 波長 1425 nmから 1775 nmの範囲である。 破線の偏波モードの群速度分散の波長依 存性が ± 0. 03 p sZkmZnm2以内となる波長域は、 波長 1375 nmか ら 1860 nmの範囲である。
より好ましくは、 群速度分散の波長依存性が ± 0. 01 p sZkmZnm2以 内であり、 これは破線のモードにおいて波長 1480 nmから 1770の範囲 で実現されている。 さらに破線のモードにおいて、 波長 1550 nmから 17 20 nmの範囲では、 群速度分散の波長依存性は土 0. 003 p s/km/n m2以内と、 さらに平坦な特性が実現されている。
ちなみに、 通常の単一モードファイバの群速度分散の波長依存性は、 波長 1 550 nmにおいて、 およそ 07 p s ZkmZnm2である。 また、 破線の モードにおいて、 波長 1550η mから 1720 nmの範囲で群速度分散の値 は ± 0. 05 p sノ kr nm以内であり、 波長 1530 nmから 1730 η mの範囲における群速度分散の値は ±0. 2 p sZkmZnm以内であり、 そ れらの差の絶対値は 0. 4 p sZkmZnm以内である。
F I G.3は本実施例の分散フラットファイバのモードの分布を示す。 モード フィールド径 (縦 X横) は 2. 81 mX 2. 97 tmである。
また、 本実施例の偏波保持性能の強さを示す目安として、 波長 1. 55 m におけるモード複屈折の値を求めると、 3. 0X 10— 4となる。 この値は、 巿 販されている PANDA型石英系偏波面保存ファイバ (PANDA type silica polarization-maintaining optical fiber) でのモ一ド複屈折の値と同等であ る。
第 2の実施例
第 2の実施例では、各空孔 13、 14の隣接する空孔の中心間の距離 Λを 3. 4 ΠΙ、 第 1の空孔 13の直径 d 1と上記距離 Λとの比を 0. 35、 高屈折率 部 11の直径 d 2と上記距離 Λとの比を 0. 8、 第 2の空孔 14の直径 d 2と 上記距離 Λとの比を 1、 石英ガラスに対する比屈折率差△を高屈折率部 11を 2%、 低屈折率部 12を 0%とした。 本実施例は、 上述の第 1の実施例の構造 パラメータを変えた例である。
本実施例において、 コア部 11、 12のみの群速度分散は、 波長 2390 η m以下において正常分散である。 また、 本実施例において、 コア部 11、 12 の屈折率分布は、 その中心から半径方向に向かって、 高屈折率部.11→無添加 の石英ガラスと変化しており、 いわゆるステップインデックス型の屈折率分布 である。
F I G.4Aは本実施例の分散フラットファイバの群速度分散の波長依存性 を示す。 F I G.4 Aに示す実線の曲線および破線の曲線は、 本実施例の直交す るそれぞれの偏波モ一ドに対する分散特性を示している。
本実施例においては、 実線の方の偏波モードの群速度分散の波長依存性が土
0. 03 p s/kmZnm2以内となる波長域は、 波長 1275 nmから 180 Onmの範囲である。 より好ましくは、 群速度分散の波長依存性が ± 0. 01 p s/kmZnm2以内であり、 これは波長 1350 nmから 1700 nmの範 囲で実現されている。
さらに、 波長 1425 nmから 1650 nmの範囲では、 群速度分散の波長 依存性は ±0. 0035 p sZkmZnm2以内と、 さらに平坦な特性が実現さ れている。 波長 1365 nmから 1695 nmの範囲で群速度分散の差の絶対 値は 0· 4 ρ s/kmZnm以内である。
また、 F I G.4Bは、 各空孔の隣接する空孔の中心間の距離 Λを 3. 5 m としたが、 他のパラメ一タは F I G.4Aと同じとしたファイバの群速度分散の 波長依存性を示す。 F I G.4 Bに示す実線曲線の方の偏波モードの波長依存性 が ± 0. 03 p s/kmZnm2以内となる波長域は、 波長 1295 nmから 1 820 nmの範囲である。 波長 1400 nmから 1750 nmの範囲で群速度 分散の波長依存性は、 最大 0. 01 p s/km/nm2である。 さらに、 波長 1 450 nmから 1670 nmの範囲で群速度分散の波長依存性は、 最大士 0. 003 p sZkmZnm2以内である。波長 1410 nmから 1720 nmの範 囲で群速度分散の差の絶対値は、 0. 4 p sZkmZnm以内である。
さらに、 各空孔の隣接する空孔の中心間の距離 Λを 3. 46 mとすると、 波長 1400n mから 1710 nmの範囲で、 群速度分散の値は ±0. 2 p s Zkm/nm以内であり、 その差の絶対値は 0. 4 p s kmZnm以内であ る。 そして、 モードフィールド径は 2. 8X2. 4 ΠΙである。
また、 本実施例のファィバの偏波保持性能の強さを示す目安として波長 1. 55 mにおけるモ一ド複屈折の値を求めると、 8. 5X 10—4となる。 この 値は、 市販されている P AND A型石英系偏波面保存ファイバのモード複屈折 の値よりも大きい。
なお、 上述した構造パラメ一夕 d a、 d l、 d 2、 Λ、 Δの組み合わせは、 第 1の実施例, 第 2の実施例で述べた値に限られないのは勿論である。
第 2の実施形態
F I G. 5は、 本発明の第 2の実施形態における光ファイバ (分散フラットフ アイバ) の横断面の中心付近を拡大して示す。 本実施形態は、 前述の第 1の実 施形態とは空孔の配置を変えたものである。 F I G. 5に示す構成要素 5 0〜5 4は F I G. 1の構成要素 1 0〜1 4と同じである。 すなわち、 5 0は光フアイ バ (分散フラットファイバ)、 5 1はコア部の高屈折率部、 5 2はコア部の低屈 折率部、 5 3はクラッド部に形成した第 1の空孔、 5 4はクラッド部に形成し た第 2の空孔である。 また、 本実施形態の作製方法も第 1の実施形態と同様で ある。 すなわち、 コア部の中心に高屈折率部 5 1を有している。
以下に、 F I G. 5の構造の本発明の第 2の実施形態の分散フラットファイバ における実際の実施例とその特性を説明する。
第 3の実施例
第 3の実施例は F I G. 5の構造において、 各空孔 5 3、 5 4の隣接する空孔 の中心間の巨離 Λを 2 . 4 3 m, 第 1の空孔 5 3の直径 d 1と上記 g巨離 Λと の比を 0 . 3 5、 高屈折率部 5 1の直径 d 2と上記距離八との比を 0 . 8、 第 2の空孔 5 4の直径 d 2と上記距離 Λとの比を 0 . 8、 石英ガラスに対する比 屈折率差 Δを高屈折率部 5 1を 1 . 5 %、 低屈折率部 5 2を— 0 . 3 %とした 本実施例において、 コア部 5 1、 5 2のみの群速度分散は、 1 5 9 0 nm以下 において正常分散である。 また、 本実施例において、 コア部 5 1、 5 2の屈折 率分布は、 中心から半径方向に向かって高屈折率部 5 1—石英ガラスよりも低 い低屈折率部 5 2→無添加の石英ガラスと変化しており、 中心部に高屈折率部 51を持つ、 いわゆる W型の屈折率分布である。
F I G.6は本実施例の分散フラットファイバの群速度分散の波長依存性を 示す。 F I G.6に示す実線の曲線および破線の曲線は、 本実施例の直交するそ れぞれの偏波モードに対する分散特性を示している。 群速度分散の波長依存性 は ±0. 03 p s/km/nm2以下が波長 1225 nmから 1675 nmの範 囲で実現されている。 ここで、 好適な波長範囲は、 波長 1225 nmから 15 90 nmの範囲である。
より好ましくは、 群速度分散の波長依存性は ±0. O l p sZkmZnm2以 下であり、 これは実線の方の偏^モードの波長 1300 nmから 1600 nm の範囲実現されている。 ここで、 好適な波長範囲は、 波長 1300 nmから 1 590 nmの範囲である。
また、 波長 1470n mから 1590 nmの範囲で群速度分散の値は士 0. 2 p sZkm/nm以内であり、 その差の絶対値は 0. 4p s_/kmZnm以 内である。 モードフィールド径は 2 X 2. 3 mである。
第 4の実施例
第 4の実施例では、 F I G.5の構造において、 各空孔 53、 54の隣接する 空孔の中心間の距離 Λを 2. 3 um, 第 1の空孔 53の直径 d 1と上記距離 Λ との比を 0. 35、 高屈折率部 51の直径 d aと上記距離 Λとの比を 0. 8、 第 2の空孔 54の直径 d 2と上記距離 Λとの比を 0. 8、 石英ガラスに対する 比屈折率差 Δを高屈折率部を 2 %、 低屈折率部を 0 %とした。
本実施例において、 コア部 51、 52のみの群速度分散は、 波長 1860 n m以下において正常分散である。 本実施例において、 コア部 51、 52の屈折 率分布は中心から半径方向に向かって、 高屈折率部 51→無添加の石 ガラス と変化しており、 いわゆるステップインデックス型の屈折率分布である。
F I G.7は本実施例の分散フラットファイバの群速度分散の波長依存性を 示す。 F I G.7に示す実線の曲線および破線の曲線は、 本実施例の直交するそ れぞれの偏波モードに対する分散特性を示している。 実線の方の偏波モードで は、 波長 1210 nmから 1725 nmの範囲において群速度分散の波長依存 性は ±0. 03 p s/km/nm2以内である。 また、 波長 1300 nmから 1 600 nmの範囲で群速度分散の波長依存性は土 0. 01 p s ZkmZnm2以 内である。 また、 波長 1470 nmから 1590 nmの範囲で群速度分散の値 は ±0. 2 p sZkmZnm2内であり、 その差の絶対値は 0. 4p sZkm/ nm以内である。 モードフィールド径は 2 X 2. 3 /mである。
なお、 構造パラメ一夕 d a、 d l、 d2、 △の組み合わせは、 第 3の実施例, 第 4の実施例 4で述べた値に限られないのは勿論である。
その他の実施形態
本発明の実施形態とその実施例を説明したが、 本発明に係わる空孔の配置、 屈 折率分布等は上述した実施形態に限らない。 特許請求の範囲の記載の範囲内で あれば、 その変更、 修正、 置換等は本発明の実施形態に含まれる。

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . ガラスもしくはプラスチック、 その他使用する波長において透明な媒質 のいずれかを材料として形成されている光ファイバであって、
前記光ファイバの断面の中心付近において光を導波するコア部と、
前記光ファイバの長手方向に沿って形成されかつ該光ファイバの断面におい て概略一定間隔をおいて概略一様に分散配置された複数の空孔を有し、 該複数 の空孔はそれぞれ前記光ファイバの長手方向に沿ってその平均的な直径が概略 一定値である概略円形、 概略楕円形もしくは概略多角形の形状を有し、 かつ該 空孔の中は真空、 もしくは使用する波長において透明かつ前記媒質よりも屈折 率の低い気体、 液体ないし固体で満たされているクラッド部とを有し、
前記光ファイバはその断面において前記空孔の配置を前記コア部の中心を対 称軸とする 2回以下の回転対称としたフォ卜ニック結晶構造を有し、 かつ動作 波長における群速度分散の波長依存性が通常の単一モードファイバよりも小さ い低分散スロープ性を有し、
前記コア部はその中心にその周辺部よりも屈折率の高い高屈折率領域を有し、 該コァ部のみ群速度分散が正常分散であることを特徴とする分散フラットファ ィバ。
2 . 前記コア部の屈折率分布が、ステップインデックス型、 グレーデッド型、 マッチドクラッド型、 もしくは W型、 三重クラッド型、 四重クラッド型等の多 層型であることを特徴とするクレーム 1に記載の分散フラットフアイバ。
3 . 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの前記動作波長における群速度 分散の波長依存性が ± 0 . 0 3 p s / kmZnm2以下であることを特徴とする クレーム 1または 2に記載の分散フラットファイバ。
4. 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの前記動作波長における群速度 分散の波長依存性が ±0. 01 p sZkmZnm2以下であることを特徴とする クレーム 1または 2に記載の分散フラットファイバ。
5. 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの前記動作波長における群速度 分散の波長依存性が ±0. 03 p sZkmZnm2以下であり、 かつ少なくとも いずれか一つの偏波モ一ドの前記動作波長における群速度分散の値の差の絶対 値が 0. 4 sZkmZnm以下であることを特徴とするクレーム 1または 2 に記載の分散フラットファイバ。
6. 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの前記動作波長における群速度分 散の波長依存性が ±0. 01 p s kmノ nm 2以下であり、 かつ少なくともい ずれか一つの偏波モードの前記動作波長における群速度分散の値の差の絶対値 が 0. 4p s/kmZnm以下であることを特徴とするクレーム 1または 2に 記載の分散フラットファイバ。
7. 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの前記動作波長における群速度 分散の波長依存性が ±0. 03 p s/kmZnm2以下であり、 かつ前記光ファ ィバのモードフィールド径が 3 m以下であることを特徴とするクレーム 1ま たは 2に記載の分散フラットファイバ。
8. 少なくともいずれか一つの偏波モードでの前記動作波長における群速度 分散の波長依存性が ±0. 01 p s/km/nm2以下であり、 かつ前記光ファ ィバのモードフィ一ルド径が 3 m以下であることを特徴とするクレーム 1ま たは 2に記載の分散フラットファイバ。
