For example, the user may have a PVR (e.g., first computing device 4) at a specific location (e.g., at home). The user specifies that the user prefers a specific type of television (TV) show (e.g., science fiction) and prefers to watch at certain hours. The PVR generates the user profile based on the user specifications in relation to categories in the first database 109. The user profile is transferred or copied on to a smart card (e.g., second computing device 8). The user may now take the smart card to a remote location ( i.e., a hotel room) and couple the smart card to a second PVR (e.g., the third computing device 10). The user profile data will access appropriate content (e.g., TV show) and the smart card will control a display of the appropriate content based on the user profile data.
Alternatively, the user profile data may access appropriate content (e.g., TV show) and the smart card will recommend specified content to the user based on the user profile data. Applications for a portable user profile are unlimited and may include, inter alia, recommending or accessing specified entertainment content on a PVR, automotive applications (radio settings, temperature settings, seat settings), TV or monitor settings
(e.g., contrast, brightness, etc), environmental settings in a home (e.g., heat, light, appliance, etc), making airline or hotel reservations, etc. The user profile data may be generated any number of ways including, inter alia, explicitly, implicitly, and collaboratively. In order to generate the user profile data explicitly, user input data (e.g, user specified settings, preferences, etc) is entered through the input device 15 to the first computing device 4 and the user profile data is created based on the user input data such as described in: Method and Apparatus for Generating Recommendation scores using Implicit and Explicit Viewing Preferences, U.S.P.T.O Serial No. 09/666401, filed 09/20/2000, incorporated herein in it's entirety. In order to generate the user profile data implicitly, user history data (e.g, past user settings, preferences, etc) are stored on the first computing device 4 and the user history data is created based on the user history data such as described in: Method and Apparatus for Recommending Television Programming using Decision Trees, U.S.P.T.O Serial No. 09/466406, filed 12/17/1999, incorporated herein in it's entirety. A combination of the user input data and the geographical user data are used to create the user profile. The second computing device 8 may recommend to the user specified data within the second database 112 (e.g., TV shows, specified settings, hotel preferences, etc) based on the comparison of the user profile data to the second database 112. Alternatively, the second computing device 8 may process and/or use specified data (e.g., change settings, make reservations, enable specific TV shows or movies, etc) within the second database 112 based on the comparison of the user profile data to the second database 112. The first database 109 may be equivalent to the second database 112.
As an alternative embodiment, the user profile may be generated directly on the second computing device 8 (e.g., as shown in FIG. 4) instead of the first computing device 4 thereby eliminating a need to copy the user profile data from the first computing device 4 to the second computing device 8. All other features of the alternative embodiment are equivalent to the aforementioned first embodiment.
FIG. 2 illustrates FIG. 1 showing a block diagram view of an electrical structure 2 comprising the second computing device 8 electrically coupled and/or mechanically coupled to the third computing device 10, in accordance with embodiments of the present invention.
