Definitions
- Device suitable for wear on the head of a user and head-borne display having such a device
- the present invention relates to a device suitable for wear on the head of a user and comprising a first circumferential band, the circumference of which is adjustable by means of a manual adjusting mechanism, and a second band, the two ends of which are secured or integrated in the first band to form a relieving strap.
- the invention also relates to a head-borne display having such a device.
- a device is previously known by virtue of, for example, US patent 5 321 416.
- a circumferential band is herein adjusted by the rotary motion which is applied to a rotary knob and which is translated into a mutual linear motion in which the ends of the band overlap.
- the relieving strap has a given, non- adjustable length. The design therefore has clear limitations in terms of the scope to adjust the device according to different head shapes and can thus be uncomfortable to wear.
- the object of the present invention is to obtain a device suitable for wear, on the head of a user, which device is simple to adjust to the head of the wearer and sits steadily and yet comfortably in place.
- the object of the invention is achieved by virtue of a device according to the first paragraph of the description, characterized in that the second band, in the form of the relieving strap, is configured with a self-adjusting tension-relief mechanism.
- the introduction of a self-adjusting relieving strap means that the user needs only make one adjustment, corresponding to the hat size, which adjusts the circumferential band to the head shape of the user. This adjustment can be achieved with an easily accessible adjusting mechanism operated by a rotary knob. The whole adjustment can therefore be made in a single operation.
- User trials with prototypes consistent with the inventive concept have shown that the majority of users quickly learn to handle the device. Putting it on is comparatively simple and can be roughly compared with donning a cap.
- the invention is advantageously characterized in that the second band comprises at least one elastic section and at least one, preferably two, friction sections. These combinations of elastic section and friction sections provide scope for the elasticity and friction to be suitably balanced.
- the friction sections are herein constituted by two band sections which are mutually displaceable under the effect of friction.
- the friction between the band sections is of crucial importance to the self-adjusting tension-relief mechanism.
- the one band section is in this case provided with an oblong recess in the longitudinal direction of the band section and the second band section comprises at least two guide elements placed in the oblong recess .
- the second band section can expediently be configured to be common to two displaceable band sections. A more comfortable, seamless bearing contact against the head of the user is thereby achieved.
- the elastic section is constituted by a separate elastic element and this element is arranged to connect the one band section in a first friction section to the one band section in a second friction section.
- the elastic section is configured in one piece with the one band section in a first friction section and the one band section in a second friction section.
- the embodiment is combined with a particularly simple production and assembly.
- the elastic section can be configured to have varying width and to comprise central recesses level with wide parts of the elastic section.
- the device according to the invention is suitable for forming part of a head-borne display.
- a head-borne display There are also, however, a number of other conceivable fields of application, such as, for example, in welding helmets, visored helmets and front-heavy head-borne equipment in which there is a need for individual adjustment and well-defined positioning, such as, for example, in the case of head-borne cameras or head-borne light- amplifiers .
- Figure 1 shows an example of a device according to the invention to be worn by a user.
- Figure 2a shows in side view and Figure 2b in top view, in diagrammatic representation, a first example of a relieving strap forming part of the device according to the invention and consistent with the embodiment shown in Figure 1.
- Figure 3a shows in side view and Figure 3b in top view, in diagrammatic representation, a second example of a relieving strap which alternatively can form part of a device according to the invention.
- the device 1 shown in Figure 1 suitable for wear on the head 2 of a user, comprises a circumferential band 3 and a relieving band 4, the two ends 5 and 6 of which are secured in the first band.
- an adjusting mechanism comprising a rotary knob 7 for adjusting the circumference of the first band 3.
- any previously known design is used, for example the type described in the aforementioned US patent 5 321 416, for which reason the detailed configuration of the adjusting mechanism is neither illustrated nor described here.
- the circumferential band is further, in a known manner, angled in connection with the back of the head of the user, so as better to hold the device firmly in place.
- the band is here constructed of two first-type band sections 9 and 10, which are in contact with a second band section 11.
- the two first-type band sections 9 and 10 are in contact with each other by virtue of an elastic element 12 secured by means of a joint 13, such as a rivet joint.
- the band sections 9 and 10 are provided with longitudinal openings 14 and 15 for cooperation with guide elements 16-19 placed in the second band section 11.
- Connected to the ends 4, 5 of the relieving band there are holes 20-23 for use in securing it in the circumferential band 3 by means of joints 24 and 25.
- the band sections 9 and 10 can be integrated with the circumferential band 3.
- the relieving band 4 provides a self-adjusting tension- relief mechanism by virtue of a suitably balanced friction between the two first-type band sections 9 and 10 and the second band section 11, in cooperation with a suitably balanced elasticity by virtue of the elastic element 12.
- Figures 3a and 3b show an alternative embodiment of the relieving band 4. Those components which have correspondence in the embodiment already described above with reference to Figures 2a and 2b have been given the same reference notations and are not here fully described. According to the alternative embodiment shown, the two first-type band sections 9 and 10 and the elastic element 12 have here been replaced by a component 26 made in one piece. The elastic function is in this case obtained by a dentate pattern 27 with central recesses 28.
- the device 1 shown in Figure 1 supports a head-mounted display 29 and is provided with headphones 30.
- a cable connection 31 is in contact with the display 29.
- the device can be provided with cushioning pads at suitable locations and in Figure 1 a pad 32 is shown inserted between the circumferential band 3 and a display part 29. Other pads can be arranged, for example connected to the neck of the user.
- the device 1 With mounted display, the device 1 becomes relatively front-heavy, though the proposed design has proved able to cope well with this. Many other fields of application for the device are also conceivable.
- the invention is not limited to the embodiments exemplified above, but can undergo modifications within the scope of the following patent claims.
