Abstract

Method is provided, according to which a vehicle capturing site is capable of identifying design model, color and license plate number of vehicles, by capturing corresponding images of the vehicles, by aiming a video acquisition device towards a preferred place where vehicles are expected to pass, in order to generate a video data in the form of still-picture, or a continuous video stream, which represents essentially all of the incidents occurring in the Field Of View (FOV) of the video acquisition device. After acquiring the video data, it is digitized, processed and analyzed by a computer unit, for obtaining the design model, color and license plate number of the captured vehicles. The processing and analysis includes, among other things, use of edge-detection algorithms, which are utilized for extracting from the video data silhouette and contour lines that characterize the captured vehicles. Further, key features, which are extracted from the obtained silhouette and contour lines, are compared to a corresponding data stored in a database, and the design model, color and license plate number of the vehicles are determined according to the results of the comparison.
