Abstract

Disclosed are programmable lenses and gratings for use in a variety of optical applications, such as phase contrast correction, phase shift mask, maskless lithography, optical switching, acousto-optic holography, cryptographic keys, and optical memory devices. Further disclosed are methods for producing programmable optical lenses and gratings based on enhanced Brillouin scattering using acoustophoresis. Also described is a programmable axicon lens capable of a range of operation from ~1 mm to > 200 cm including a fluid or solid compressible medium enclosed in a circular acoustic transducer (PZT ring transducer). By varying the acoustic drive frequency and/or the amplitude of the drive signal, the programmable lens can be tuned for a range of focal lengths and behaviors.
