Abstract

A method of cleaning hollow fiber membranes comprising directing a fluid into a hollow fiber filtration module (10) comprising a housing (12), a feed fluid inlet (14), a retentate outlet (16), a permeate outlet (18), and at least one hollow fiber membrane (20) disposed in the housing (12), wherein the hollow fiber membrane (20) has a bore (26), an inner surface (28), and an outer surface (30), providing a first pressure to the inner surface (28) of the hollow fiber membrane (20) through the retentate outlet (16) and passing the fluid along the bore (26) of at least one hollow fiber membrane (20) to provide a retentate and a permeate, increasing the first pressure, applying a second pressure to the outer surface (30) of the hollow fiber membrane (20) through the permeate outlet (18), and releasing the increased first pressure while maintaining or increasing the second pressure to pass permeate from the outer surface (30) to the inner surface (28) of the hollow fiber membrane (20), is disclosed.
