Cells were grown at 37°C for 24 hours in modified RPMI-1640 (GIBCO R-1383 Lotl08H83032; supplemented with 23.8 mM sodium hydrogen carbonate, 2 mM L- glutamine, 10 mM HEPES, 50 ⁇ M ⁇ -Mercaptoethanol, 1 mM Sodium Pyruvate, 10 5 IU/1 penicillin, 0.01% streptomycin sulphate) and 10% fetal calf serum, after which time they were serum starved for 24 hours in modified RPMI-1640. The serum free medium was then replaced with 500 ⁇ l of RPMI-1640 containing the following: 0% fetal calf serum (negative control), 10% fetal calf serum (positive control),
