Description

DISPOSABLE BIB Field of the Invention
This invention relates to apparel. It more particularly relates to a disposable bib.
Background to the Invention
Bibs tend to get wet during use, and on account of their particular location around the neck of a user, wet bib material inevitably comes into contact with the skin of the user and, especially in the case of infants, this can lead to skin irritation.
The applicant therefore believes that a need exists for a disposable bib that remains dry in those areas in which it is prone to come into contact with the skin of a user and, hence, will not lead to or at least minimize skin irritation.
Summary of the Invention
According to the invention, there is provided a disposable bib which includes a body at least part of which is multi-layered and which body includes:- - a liquid impermeable operatively back layer; a liquid permeable non-absorbent operatively front layer; and an absorbent layer sandwiched in between the back layer and the front layer, with the respective layers being secured together.
The bib may include locating means for operatively locating it on the general chest area of a user. The locating means may be in the form of inter-securable members fast with the body and protruding operatively upwardly therefrom, the members being shaped and dimensioned so as to extend around the neck of a user. The inter-securable members may be in the form of generally arcuately shaped flaps, free ends of which provide for the inter-securing thereof. The flaps, when inter-secured, together with the body, may define an aperture in which a neck of a user is receivable.
The entire body may be multi-layered.
The flaps may be integrally formed with the body. The flaps may thus also be multi-layered as hereinbefore described.
The bib may also include securing means for securing free ends of the flaps together. The securing means may be in the form of a one-sided adhesive strip or tongue at least part of which is fast with the free end of one of the flaps and • the remaining part of which is securable to the free end of the other flap. If desired, the adhesive side of the remaining part of the strip or tongue may be covered by a release or peel strip.
Instead, or in addition, the locating means may include an adhesive layer provided on an operatively rear surface of the back layer. The adhesive layer may be covered by a peel of backing or release layer.
The respective layers may be secured together along their edges by any appropriate means such as, for example, stitching.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The invention is now described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
In the drawings:- Figure 1 shows, in front view, a disposable bib in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 shows a sectional view of the bib taken at ll-ll in Figure 1.
With reference to the drawings, a disposable bib in accordance with the invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 10. The bib 10 includes a body, generally indicated by reference numeral 12, intended to be located on a general chest area of a user, and locating means, generally indicated by reference numeral 14, for locating the bib on the chest area of a user.
In the embodiment shown, the locating means 14 includes two generally arcuately shaped flaps 16, 18 which are integrally formed with the body 12 and protrude operatively upwardly therefrom so as to extend around a neck of a user (not shown). The disposable bib 10 has an elongate, generally ovoid shape in outline in front view, and the flaps 16, 18 together with the body 12 define a roughly ovoid shaped aperture 20 in which the neck of a user is receivable. It is, however, to be appreciated that the disposable bib 10 need not necessarily be in a form or shape as illustrated in the drawings but can be of any appropriate form or shape.
The disposable bib 10 is a multi-layered bib consisting of three layers of different material. An operatively back layer 22 of the bib 10 is of a liquid impermeable material such as, for example, a synthetic plastics material. On top of that, the bib 10 includes a central layer 24 of absorbent material, and yet on top of the central layer 24 it has an operatively front layer 26 of liquid permeable, non- absorbent material. Preferably, the layers 24, 26 are in the form of cloth or fabric having the properties as hereinbefore described. The layer 26 is typically of a material colloquially known as "stay-dry" material. The absorbent layer 24 may, typically, be a material which includes or has been treated with a chemical or chemical composition suitable to enhance its absorbent properties. If desired, the front layer 26 may include a decorative pattern such as, for example, an illustration of an animation character.
By way of development, if desired, any one of the layers 22, 24, 26 may include either or both an antiseptic or a fragrant agent, or may be treated with such an agent.
The respective layers 22, 24 26 of the bib 10 are substantially of the same size and shape and are secured together along their edges 28. The layer 24 is thus sandwiched between the layers 22, 26. In the embodiment shown, the edges 28 of the respective layers 22, 24, 26 are stitched together. It is to be appreciated that the edges 28 can be secured together by any other appropriate means. If desired, the bib 10 may include a binding extending along the edges 28.
The disposable bib 10 further includes securing means in the form of a securing strip 30 for securing free ends 16.1 , 18.1 of the flaps 16, 18 together in use. The securing strip 30 is in the form of a one-sided adhesive strip having its one end fast with the free end 16.1 of the flap 16 and its other end adhesively securable to the free end 18.1 of the other flap 18. If desired, that part of the strip 30 which is securable to the flap 18 may include a tear or peel strip covering and protecting its adhesive side. In use, the flaps 16, 18 are located around the neck of a user, the release or peel strip is removed from the strip 30 and free ends of the flaps 16.1 , 18.1 are secured together by means of the strip 30.
If desired, an adhesive layer (not shown) can be provided on an operatively rear surface of the back layer 22, i.e. that surface of the back layer 22 which, in use, faces the wearer. The adhesive layer can be covered by a peel off backing or release layer. Hence, in use, by removing the backing layer the adhesive can be exposed and the bib can be secured to the wearer by means of the adhesive on the back layer 22. The adhesive can be used in addition to or instead of the flaps 16, 18. The Applicant believes that a disposable bib in accordance with the invention will, on account of the operatively front layer which is liquid permeable but non- absorbent, remain dry in those areas in which it is prone to come into contact with the skin of a user and, hence, will not lead to or at least minimize skin irritation.
It is further speculatively believed that in particular applications, on account of its stay-dry properties, a disposable bib in accordance with the invention may even be used more than once before it will need to be disposed of which, in turn, may lead to monetary savings.
It is to be appreciated that the invention is not limited to any specific embodiment or configuration as hereinbefore described or illustrated.
