Abstract

The present invention identifies and characterizes representative member chemoattractant molecules, or chemokines, which exert antimicrobial activity. More particularly, recombinant monokine induced by ifn-Ϝ, ifn-Ϝ-inducible protein of low molecular weight size, and ifn-inducible t cell α chemoattractant, and members of the ifn-inducible tripeptide motif glu-leu-arg (elr)-cxc chemokines are antimicrobial against bacteria including e. Coli and I. Monocytogenes. The concentration of at least two elr-cxc chemokines (ip-10/cxcl10 and mig/cxcl9) released from ifn-Ϝ-stimulated pbmc in 24 hours are about 25 to about 35-fold higher, respectively, than from unstimulated cells.
