Abstract

Disclosed is a method for discovering human genes associated with viral hepatitis infection using a model based on small animals transplanted with human liver fragments. Normal human liver fragments are infected with hepatitis virus and then transplanted into immune compromised mice obtained by irradiation and transplantation with SCID bone marrow. Similar liver fragments are transplanted into the mice without being infected with the virus. Gene expression profiles are then generated from both these types of liver fragments. Comparison using gene arrays allows the detection of hepatitis-infection associated genes. Such genes can be further exploited as targets to generate and screen for anti viral agents.
