Abstract

Dyes, reactive intermediates used to synthesize luminescent and non-luminescent compounds, and methods of synthesizing and using such compounds. These luminescent and non-luminescent compounds may be based on squaric, croconic, and rhodizonic acid, and their analogs, among others.
