Abstract

A combination of holder (40) and insert (48) for a mineral breaker has a recess (44) at or near its extremity to receive an insert which forms the extremity surface of the combination, the extreme surface being curved.

Description

INSERT FOR MINERAL BREAKERS
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to an insert for a mineral breaker.
BACKGROUND ART
Many arrangements have been proposed for the location of hard inserts, such as tungsten carbide inserts, into the holders of mineral breakers with a view to strengthening those zones of the holders which are subjected to the most wear.
The wear pattern caused by the flowing mineral has the effect of eroding the zone in a certain pattern and this includes the zone immediately in contact with the insert. Such erosion eventually results in the insert becoming loose leading to its removal from the recess holding it in the holder.
In one solution of the problem, at least two inserts were provided, the insert at or towards the extremity of the holder being at an obtuse angle to the flow of mineral material exiting the breaker. The insert adjacent the extremity insert serves as a back-up for the extremity insert.
It was found that wear occurs in the zone on the outside of the extremity insert, this zone usually comprising steel which is subject to wear in normal operation.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome or at least greatly reduce the wear at the this zone.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention an insert for a mineral breaker is provided which is adapted to be located at the extremity of the holder to form a portion of the extreme surface of the holder unit the insert fitting into a recess in the holder and which has a surface forming the extremity of the holder, the surface comprising or including a curved zone intermediate the ends thereof.
In a preferred form of the invention the surface of the insert forming the extremity 5 of the holder has a curved portion which extends to or near the top zone of the holder and which also extends to or near the vertical surface of the extremity of the holder.
A back-up insert may be provided adjacent the insert forming the extremity surface of the holders.
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
10 An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a sectional side view of a holder with an insert according to the invention
In the drawing a holder 40 includes a pair of recesses 42, 44, the former accommodating a back up insert 46 and the latter having an insert 48 which has a portion 15 50 located in the recess 44 and a major portion 52 which forms an extremity of the holder.
The angle between the portion 50 and the base of the portion 52 may be about 60 to 150 degrees but an angle of 90 degrees is shown in the drawing. A radiused zone 56 is provided intermediate the ends of the outer portion 52 of the insert. This radiused or^ curved zone extends approximately from the top zone of the holder to the vertical surface 20 of the extremity of the holder.
The curved nature of the surface considerably reduces the tendency of the insert to fracture if it included angled zones.

Claims

CLAIMS:
1. A combination holder and inserts for a mineral breaker characterised in that a recess is provided at or near its extremity adapted to receive an insert, a portion of the surface of which forming the extremity surface of the combination, such surface comprising or including a curved zone intermediate the ends thereof.
2. The combination as claimed in claim 1 characterised in that the surface of the insert forming the extremity surface of the combination has a curved portion extending from at or near the top zone of the holder to or near to the vertical surface thereof.
3. The combination as claimed in either of the above claims characterised in that a back-up insert is provided adjacent the insert forming the extremity of the combination.
4. A combination holder and insert substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
