Description

TITLE: "Method of assembling spectacles provided with rimless frames and device for carrying out the said method"
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a method of assembling spectacles having rimless frames, in other words spectacles which provide for the lenses to be directly connected to at least one central bridge and two lateral earpieces, and to a device for carrying out the said method.
As is known, various types of fixing devices exist for fixing the temporal rims and the nasal rims of the two lenses to, respectively, the earpieces and the central bridge. One of the said devices is described in document WO 97/21133: in that device, the bridge possesses two ends for fixing at appropriate peripheral points on the two lenses, and each earpiece possesses one end for fixing at an appropriate peripheral point on the respective lens. Each end of the bridge and of the earpiece is provided with at least one threaded stem to be inserted through an appropriate through hole formed in the lenses: these stems of the ends of the bridge and of the earpieces are inserted from the front side into two through holes formed in each of the lenses and interact with nuts provided on the opposite side for the final fixing of the frame. The two through holes formed in the nasal and temporal rims or each lens are, furthermore, positioned at the bottom of two notches produced on the said rims, and the ends of the bridge and of the earpieces are shaped in a manner such as to be at least partially inserted into the said notches.
This device possesses various disadvantages, among which is the necessity for protracted and meticulous milling operations in order to obtain the requisite notches, these operations in fact being carried out on the lens and requiring a high-precision end result; and, in particular, the lack of long-term strength, in so far as, in the normal operations of opening and closing the spectacles, the nuts may easily work loose on the respective threaded stems of the bridge and of the earpieces: this loosening may result first in obvious imbalances in the wearing of the spectacles, and eventually in the unintentional removal thereof, with the danger of damaging the lenses. It is therefore an object of the present invention to eliminate the disadvantages of the known devices cited above.
A first subject of the present invention, therefore, is a method of assembling spectacles provided with rimless frames and comprising at least one central bridge provided with nose pads connectable to the said bridge by appropriate support elements, two lateral earpieces and two lenses; at least one internal through hole in the vicinity of the nasal rim and of the temporal rim and at least one peripheral notch is formed in each lens; the said method comprises the following phases: fitting the said support elements of each nose pad into an external pivot formed in the vicinity of each end of the bridge; threading the through hole formed on the nasal rim of each lens onto the said external pivot and threading the through hole formed upon the temporal rim onto an external pivot formed in the vicinity of the end of each earpiece; removing the surplus posterior length of the said external pivots and drilling the ends thereof in a manner such that they substantially reach the thickness of the lenses; inserting into the through holes of the lenses a screw capable of being tightened in respective holes formed longitudinally on the said external pivots of the bridge and of the earpieces. A further subject of the present invention is a device for assembling spectacles for carrying out the said method, in accordance with the appended claims. Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be better understood in the course of the description that follows, considered by way of example and without implying any limitation, and referring to the attached drawings, in which: - Figure 1 shows a plan view of a pair of spectacles having an rimless frame and comprising two lenses connected to a central bridge and two lateral earpieces by means of a fixing device according to the present invention;
- Figure 2 illustrates a partial view in section of a bridge on which are fitted two support elements for supporting a nose pad in accordance with a first phase of the present method; - Figure 3 illustrates a partial view in section of a lens fitted on the bridge in accordance with the second phase of the present method;
- Figure 4 illustrates a sectional view of a self-tapping screw capable of fixing the lens to the bridge in accordance with a further phase of the present method; - Figure 5 illustrates a partial view in section of a lens fixed to the bridge by means of the present device;
- Figure 6 illustrates a partial view in section of an earpiece to which a lens is connected in accordance with the method of the present invention; and
- Figure 7 illustrates a partial view in section of a lens fixed to a lateral earpiece by means of the device in accordance with the present invention.
With reference to the attached drawings, and in particular to Figure 1 , the numeral 1 designates a central bridge to which is connected, on each side, a nose pad 2 and the nasal rim of a lens 3. Fixed on the temporal rim of each lens 3 is a mounting 4 connected by means of a pivot pin 5 to a respective earpiece 6, for the opening and closing of the spectacles. To provide an understanding of how the rimless frame is assembled by means of the device according to the present invention, we will examine the various parts of the spectacles illustrated.
Figure 2 shows, in section, the bridge 1 , in which two pivots are formed at the two ends where the bridge is fixed to the nasal rim of the lens 3: a first, more internal pivot 101 , in which a substantially L-shaped groove 102 is provided externally, and a second, more external pivot 103 of substantially cylindrical shape, produced from plastic and provided centrally and longitudinally with a hole 104. Above the bridge is shown the nose pad 2 which is on the left in Figure 1 and to which is fixed a substantially L-shaped leg 101 , provided at the lower end with an annular disc 701. The figure is completed by a washer 8 which, in the assembly of the spectacles, will be disposed on the said disc 701.
In Figure 3, in addition to the elements described above, one of the two lenses 3 is shown; by way of example, the left-hand lens in Figure 1 has been selected. This lens 3 comprises, in a known manner, a notch 301 which is more external on the nasal rim and, more internally, a through hole 302 on which is formed, in front of the lens 3, a cavity 303 having a flat base coaxial with the said hole 302 and of greater diameter than the latter. The said cavity 303, coaxial with the hole 302 and of greater diameter than the latter, is known from patent application GE2000A000022, belonging to the same proprietors as the present application. To the rear of the said through hole 302, moreover, is formed a seating 304, again having a flat base, coaxial with the said through hole 302 and of greater diameter than the latter. Below the said lens 3 is shown the bridge 1 according to Figure 2, into the more external pivot 103 of which, in accordance with a first phase of the present method, is fitted the annular disc 701 supported by the leg 7 of the nose pad 2. The said leg 7 is inserted into the respective groove 102 formed in the pivot 101 more internal to the bridge 1 , while the washer 8 is itself also fitted on the more external pivot 103.
Figure 4 shows the same situation as Figure 3, with the nasal rim of the lens 3 inserted, by means of the through hole 302 formed in the vicinity thereof, into the more external pivot 103 of the bridge 1 , in accordance with a second phase of the present fixing method. By virtue of the cavity 303 having a flat base and formed at the front, the lens 3 bears perfectly on the washer 8, while by virtue of the more external notch 301 the said lens engages onto the more internal pivot 101 of the bridge 1 , in a manner such as to prevent undesirable oscillations thereof in the use of the spectacles. The upper part of Figure 4 shows a self-tapping screw 9 provided with a respective washer 10.
Figure 5 shows the nasal rim of the lens 3 finally fixed to the central bridge 1. As can be observed by comparing Figure 4 and Figure 5, the more external pivot 103 of the bridge 1 possesses a surplus posterior section; in this connection, according to a further phase of the present method, it is necessary to trim this section substantially flush with the posterior surface of the lens 3, as illustrated in Figure 5, and subsequently to drill the posterior end of the said pivot 103 substantially flush with the flat base of the seating 304 formed on the posterior surface of the said lens 3. At this point, according to a final phase of the present method, the washer 10 is inserted, being supported on the said seating 304, and the self-tapping screw 9 is tightened within the hole 104 formed in the plastic pivot 103 of the bridge 1. Figures 6 and 7 show the present fixing device for fixing the lenses 3 on the earpieces 6; by way of example, the right-hand earpiece in Figure 1 has been considered. The fixing method used is completely similar to what has been described in the previous figures relating to the central bridge 1 : Figure 6 shows the self-tapping screw 9 provided with a respective washer 10 and, below, the temporal rim of the right-hand lens 3 in Figure 1 , in which, similarly to the nasal rim, are formed an external notch 301 , a more internal through hole 302, the anterior cavity 303 having a flat base and the posterior seating 304, the latter likewise having a flat base. As mentioned previously, the earpiece 6 is connected to the respective mounting 4 by means of a pivot pin 5. The said mounting 4 possesses internally, similarly to the central bridge 1 , a first, more external pivot 401 projecting towards the posterior part of the spectacles and a second, more internal pivot 402 formed from plastic, which again projects towards the posterior part of the spectacles and comprises a through hole 403. This second pivot 402 also possesses a lower support 404 of greater cross section able to receive, as we shall see, the anterior cavity 303 of the temporal rim of the lens 3. The assembly of the lens 3 on the earpiece 6 then takes place in the following manner: the said lens 3 is inserted, by means of the through hole 302, into the pivot 402 of the mounting 4 in a manner such that the anterior cavity 303 rests perfectly on the base 404, of greater cross section, of the said pivot 402, and such that the notch 301 is fitted onto the first pivot 401 of the mounting 4; the surplus posterior section of the said pivot 402 is trimmed substantially flush with the posterior surface of the said lens 3; the posterior end of the said pivot 402 is drilled substantially flush with the seating 304 formed in the posterior surface of the lens, the washer 10 is introduced, being rested on the seating 304, and finally the self-tapping screw 9 is tightened within the hole 403 of the pivot 402.
