Definitions
- the invention relates to a surface optical reflector, intended to be mounted on a spacecraft such as a geostationary satellite to ensure " its thermal control -
- OSR surface optical reflectors
- Surface optical reflectors are panels that are transparent to infrared radiation, usually planar, the surface of which faces the satellite is metallized. They are intended to reflect almost entirely the incident sunlight while having a radiative capacity as high as possible, especially in the infrared range. In other words, the surface optical reflectors dissipate the heat produced by some of the equipment on board the satellites and thus guarantee their thermal control.
- document EP-A-0 930 231 describes an interface between a component emitting heat and a support plate, on a satellite. This interface is made up of juxtaposed metal strips, each of which initially has protuberances of pyramidal or hemispherical shapes. The fixing of the component on the support plate has the effect of crushing these protuberances. This ensures a contact * improved surface between parts and therefore better heat dissipation to the support plate, by conduction.
- the subject of the invention is precisely an optical surface reflector for a spacecraft, the original design of which allows it to increase the radiative capacity of the spacecraft while maintaining substantially unchanged the absorption coefficient of sunlight, while minimizing the increase in mass and volume and avoiding the addition of mechanisms likely to affect the reliability of the radiator.
- an optical surface reflector capable of forming an outer wall of a spacecraft, comprising an outer surface intended to be turned towards space and an inner surface intended to be turned towards l 'machine, characterized in that the outer surface comprises a plurality of facets, inclined relative to each other and relative to said inner surface.
- facets should be understood throughout the text as designating distinct surface areas of finite dimensions, whatever their size. Thus, the dimensions of the facets can be millimeter, decimetric or of intermediate size, without departing from the scope of the invention.
- the realization of the external surface of the optical reflector in the form of inclined facets makes it possible to increase the radiative surface by 12 'to 15% without significantly increasing the mass and volume of the reflector. In addition, this arrangement avoids the need for deployment mechanisms.
- angles formed between the adjacent facets are chosen as a function of the angles of incidence of the sun's rays liable to strike the reflector, that is to say as a function of the orientation provided for said reflector on the satellite, so that the solar rays undergo only one reflection on the facets of the reflector.
- each of the facets comprises a layer of material transparent to infrared radiation, an inner face of which intended to be turned towards the spacecraft is covered by a metallization layer.
- each of the facets preferably comprises a metallization layer chosen from the group comprising silver and aluminum.
- each of the facets further comprises a layer of material transparent to the solar spectrum, such as glass.
- the facets are fixed on a substrate serving as an internal support, made of a material chosen from the group comprising glass and polytetrafluoroethylene.
- the facets are preferably substantially planar.
- the facets then form projecting elements with a polygonal base, arranged in a regular network on said outer surface.
- the polygonal base of the projecting elements is chosen from the group comprising the equilateral triangles, squares, rectangles, rhombuses and regular hexagons.
- the projecting elements are then pyramids with a square base.
- the angle at the top of the pyramids is 90 °.
- the angle at the top of the pyramids is 60 °.
- the angle at top of the pyramids is 120 °.
- FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view which schematically represents a reflector surface optics according to the invention
- FIG. 2 is a top view, in perspective, illustrating a first embodiment of the invention, in which the exterior surface of the reflector is formed from pyramids with juxtaposed square bases;
- FIG. 3 is a top view, illustrating a second embodiment of the invention, in which the exterior surface of the reflector is formed from pyramids with juxtaposed triangular bases; and FIG. 4 is a view comparable to FIG. 3, illustrating a third embodiment of the invention, in which the exterior surface of the reflector is formed from pyramids with juxtaposed hexagonal bases.
- a surface optical reflector according to the invention constitutes a rigid panel intended to form an outer wall of a spacecraft such as a geostationary satellite or a low-orbiting satellite of the heliosynchronous type.
- such a panel therefore has an outer surface 10 intended to be turned towards space and in direct contact with the space vacuum, as well as an inner surface 12 intended to be turned towards l spacecraft equipped with said reflector.
- the functions of the surface optical reflector according to the invention are, on the one hand, to ensure maximum thermal emissivity of the interior of the satellite towards the outside, in particular in the field of infrared radiation and, on the other hand, to reflect the major part of the incident sunlight which strikes the exterior surface 10.
- the optical reflector has a generally substantially flat configuration.
- the inner surface 12 of the reflector is planar and its outer surface 10, considered as a whole, that is to say at the level of the base 16 of each of the facets 14, is also planar.
- the invention is not limited to this arrangement and also covers the case where the optical reflector has a certain curvature in one or two directions.
- the normal to the plane of the reflector or to the interior surface of the latter then corresponds to the local normal to this plane.
- the preferred embodiments of the invention illustrated in the figures also have in common that the facets 14 are all flat and oriented obliquely with respect to the external surface 10 of the reflector, considered as a whole.
- the invention is not limited to this arrangement and also covers cases where at least some of the facets 14 are curved and where some of the ' facets are oriented parallel to the outer surface 10 of the reflector, considered as a whole.
- the facets 14 advantageously have the form of isosceles triangles whose bases 16 are common to two adjacent facets and whose vertices 18 are common, as the case may be, to four (FIG. 2) , three ( Figure 3) or six ( Figure 4) 14 adjacent facets.
- the facets 14 thus form, on the external surface 10 of the reflector, projecting elements with polygonal bases, arranged in a regular network on said external surface.
- these projecting elements have a square base and each of them is formed by the juxtaposition of four triangular facets 14.
- the projecting elements have a base in the shape of an equilateral triangle and each of them is formed by the juxtaposition of three triangular facets 14.
- the projecting elements have a hexagon-shaped base and each of them is formed by the juxtaposition of six triangular facets 14.
- the size of the projecting elements formed by the facets 14 can be millimeter or decimetric, it being understood that all the intermediate sizes are also possible. The lower limit is determined to avoid any risk of diffraction of sunlight. It should be noted that the bases 16 and the vertices 18 can also be formed by lines parallel to each other, generally straight. In this case, the facets 14 are no longer triangular but in the form of flat strips inclined with respect to the external surface 10 of the reflector, considered as a whole, so as to form projecting elements with a V-shaped section.
- a surface solar reflector panel comprises a support structure 20, on which are bonded elementary surface solar reflectors. These reflectors are formed, on their outer faces (facets 14) of a layer of a material 22 such as glass, transparent to solar radiation and, on their inner faces, of a reflective metallization layer 24. If the dimensions allow, the metallization layer 24 and the layer 22 of transparent material are deposited by vacuum evaporation.
- the solar radiation is therefore returned to the outside without causing heating other than that linked to transmission losses in the glass and to losses in reflection on the metal layer.
- the heat of the satellite is transmitted, by thermal conduction, from the interior surface 12 of the reflector to the support structure 20, then to the exterior surface 10, where it can radiate in space in a Lambertian manner.
- the support structure 20 can be made of any material having the required mechanical and optical characteristics. This material can in particular be a metal, a metal alloy or a composite material.
- the layer 22 of transparent material is usually glass, deposited on the metallization layer 24.
- the layer 22 of transparent material can also be removed.
- the support structure 20 is generally made of glass, so as to minimize the mechanical stresses with the layer 22 of transparent material during temperature variations.
- the support structure 20 can be made of another material such as polytetrafluoroethylene.
- the metallization layers 24 are made for example of silver, aluminum or any other metal or metallic alloy having a good coefficient of reflection in the spectral band of the sun.
- the deposition of the metallization layers 24 on the layers 22 of transparent material can be done by any means known to those skilled in the art, such as deposition by vacuum evaporation, without departing from the scope of the invention.
- the projecting elements formed by the facets 14 are pyramids with a square base whose angle at the top, in section along a median plane parallel to the bases 16 and passing through the apex 18, is substantially equal to 90 °. This arrangement is suited in case the solar rays strike "the reflector at an angle incidence between 45 ° and 90 ° relative to the local normal to the interior surface 12 of the reflector.
- angles at the top of the pyramids with square base formed by the facets 14 can be more acute and are worth 60 °.
- a reflector thus produced makes it possible to increase by a factor of 2.82 the effective surface of the reflector exposed to the cold vacuum. In return, thermal couplings are created between the facets 14. Thus, the thermal emissivity of the reflector reaches values close to
- the surface exposed to sunlight does not increase significantly compared to a flat optical reflector of the prior art. This surface therefore remains marginal and the absorption coefficient of the reflector is not significantly increased compared to the prior art.
- the paths in the glass are shorter and the absorptions are therefore less.
- the projecting pyramids formed by the facets 14 can also have a base in the form of an equilateral triangle or in the form of a d 'regular hexagon without departing from the scope of the invention.
- the shape of the bases of the protruding elements can also be that of a rhombus or an isosceles triangle, without departing from the scope of the invention.
- the reflector according to the invention can integrate external elements such as heat pipes. They then have a hybrid structure different from that which appears in the figures. A gain of 12 to 15% of radiative surface compared to the prior art is also possible in this case.
