Abstract

There is described a process for the preparation of hydroxydiphenyl ether compounds of formula by acylation of a halogenated benzene compound (first step), etherification of the acylated compound with a phenol compound (second step), oxidation of the etherified compound (third step) and hydrolysis of the oxidised compound in a fourth step, corresponding to the following reaction scheme: wherein R1 and R2 are each independently of the others F, CI or Br; R3 and R4 are each independently of the other hydrogen ; or C1-C4alkyl; m is from 1 to 3; and n is 1 or 2. The compounds of formula (1) are used for protecting organic materials and articles from micro-organisms.
