Definitions

  • the present invention relates to electrodes generally and, more particularly, but not by way of limitation, to novel concentric counterwound spiral electrodes providing effective charge transfer at low fluid flow rates.
  • a device for transferring charge to contaminant particles in a contaminated fluid comprising: at least two counterwound spiral electrodes for insertion in a non-conductive conduit.
  • Figure 1 is a side elevational view, in cross-section, of the present invention.
  • Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the invention.
  • Figures 1 and 2 illustrate concentric counterwound electrodes 10, 12, and 14 inserted in an insulating fluid conductor, or pipe, 16.
  • Using a plurality of concentric counterwound spirals to form a conducting electrode creates the condition for efficient charge transfer. While three spirals are shown, it will be understood that any number of a plurality of concentric counterwound spirals may be employed in practicing the present invention.
  • Charge transfer is still effective for contamination levels greater than about 10 "9 wt/wt.
  • Contaminate particle size may be in the range of from about 0.05 to about 100 microns diameter.
  • Charge voltage is preferably greater than or equal to about +/- 5kV.
  • Flow rate on either side of the electrodes is less than about one meter/ second, while flow rate inside the electrodes is greater than about two meters/second.
  • Preferred materials for the electrodes are stainless steels, titanium, hastelloy, and platinum.
