- the present invention relates to a method for establishing and verifying communication between a viewer of a visual presentation and a broadcasting company and/or a programme format that is downloaded from the company, wherein respective sub-codes are transmitted in given, successive time slots, to the viewer's apparatus during at least one commercial and/or at least one programme shown, and wherein the sub-codes collectively form a unique code.

- the commercial and/or the programme shown can in a known way per se be stored in the display apparatus, and commercials and programmes viewed and verified later by the viewer can be stored in the display apparatus for subsequent crediting of a benefit.
- the stored verification data can be transferred to the company automatically on direct connection to a commercial and/or programme. This means that as long as the viewer is not connected directly to the company, the information is not transmitted to the company, but on the first connection the company will be informed of the stored verification data, which optionally may be used for valuable viewer statistics.

- the viewer In the event that a viewer does not have time to watch a programme or commercial whilst it is being broadcast, but wishes to store it in the internal memory 2" of the television set, the viewer will be able to be credited for watching the programme or commercial at a later time when this commercial and/or television programme is viewed, and at the same time the viewer makes sure that he verifies the code 3 which is shown as successive sub-codes Dn during the playback. If, for example, a remote control unit 4 is used, the signals from this unit can be passed via a decoder 11 to the television set 2 and its memory 2".
- the verification information will, for example, be relayed via the telephone connection 7, or via cable connection 12 if the viewer's television set has cable connection with the television company, or optionally via satellite 13 if the viewer uses equipment for the reception of broadcasts via satellite. If the user would like the verification relayed to the television company to be credited in the form of a monetary benefit, this benefit could be credited to, e.g., a smart card 15 which is insertable into a card reader 16 in the decoder 11.
- the viewer will be able to use this smart card as a means of payment for other benefits, if so desired, or as a means of payment to be able to watch special television programmes for which payment must be made.
- the television viewer gets a convenient way of paying for what he watches, in some cases more or less free of charge.
- the suggested method may also be regarded as an alternative to credit cards and ordinary subscriptions.
- the proposed method is of great value as commercials are easily avoided by television viewers, but when a benefit is granted for watching such a commercial, the television viewer may find it more attractive to do so.
- An important aspect of the proposed method according to the invention is that the television viewer or the consumer does not need to invest in any new technology whatsoever, as most units that are intended to be used are already available on the market. In certain cases, it may be appropriate for the television company to loan out equipment to the television viewers who may not have such equipment installed.
- the proposed method according to the invention will enable the media channels to reward viewer loyalty, whilst television advertisers will find that advertising is of greater interest than before.
