Abstract

A tap is provided which has a normal outlet and a second outlet which may be connected to a shower rose or other facility. An adapter is located in the tap housing, the adapter having a passage for water from the tap inlet through the adapter and into a chamber in one position of a washer which is movable between a first position in which it obtrudes the passage and thereby forces water along horizontal passages to the shower rose, and a second position in which the vertical passage opens into the chamber from where the water returns down the vertical passages and thence to the normal outlet.

Description

ADAPTER FOR TAPS
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to an adapter for taps which provides a second outlet which may be connected to a shower arrangement or some other utility.
BACKGROUND ART
Many existing bathrooms are not provided with showering facilities which means that considerable plumbing and subsequent repair work such as resurfacing, re-tiling and the like is required.
It is an object of the present invention to provide arrangement which is simple and inexpensive to instal and does not require extensive plumbing or repair work.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
According to the present invention a tap includes an inlet and a normal outlet, the communication therebetween being through a passage in an adapter, the adapter also including one or more return passages from a chamber communicating with the passages, the return passage or passages communicating with the normal outlet, an element, such as a washer associated with the spigot of the tap and being adapted to close the first passage for the water in the first passage to be diverted through one or more side passages to the second outlet.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRA WINGS
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partial cross sectional view of a tap arrangement according to the invention in first position; Figure 2 is a similar view of the arrangement in the second position; Figures 3 a and 3b illustrate by shading, the path of water through the arrangement in each of the positions shown in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is an exploded view of the integers of the adapter; and
Figure 5 is sectional plan view through the adapter body.
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
In order to understand the present invention it may be advantageous to consider Figures 4 and 5 first. The adapter body indicated by reference 10 includes longitudinal passages 12 and horizontal passages 14, the longitudinal and horizontal passages not being in communication with each other. The adapted body also includes a passage 16 which, as will be seen in Figures 1 and 2 and 3 communicates with the inlet 20 of the tap and a chamber 22 in the bush 40 of the adapter.
In Figure 1 and the corresponding Figure 3 a it will be seen that the flow of water is from the inlet 20 through the passage 16 and then through the horizontal passages 14 to the outlet 32, the water not being able to pass into the chamber 22 because the washer 34 obtrudes the top of the passage 16. However, in Figures 2 and 3b the water flows up the passage 16 and into the chamber 22 because the top of the passage 16 is not obturated, and then returns along the longitudinal passages 12 and thence to the outlet 36.
The components of the adapter are shown in Figure 4 which illustrates, from the top, a bush 40, an O ring 42 and banjo ring 44, another O ring 46, the adapter body 10 and a seat 48 which fits into the inlet 20 and receives the passage 16.

Claims

CLAIMS:
1. A tap including an inlet and a normal outlet characterised in that the communication therebetween is through a passage in an adapter, the adapter also including one or more return passages from a chamber communicating with the passages, the return passage or passages communicating with the normal outlet, an element associated with the spigot of the tap and being adapted to close the first passage for the water in the first passage to be diverted through one or more side passages to a second outlet.
2. The tap according to claim 1 characterised in that the adapter is fixed.
3. A tap according to claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that the element is a washer.
